The Cold War: A Historical Perspective

The Cold War: A Historical Perspective (session 1 of 5)

For those of a certain age, the Cold War is remembered as a defining backdrop of everyday life and was, by many, nothing less than a struggle for good and evil in its most elemental forms. Ideological adversaries before World War II, the two emergent superpowers afterwards, the United States and Soviet Union, became military adversaries as well. This undeclared global war ended only after the fall of Soviet Communist State and the breakaway of the Soviet satellite states in the years between 1989 and 1991.

Presented by Arthur Gottlieb, LCSW, CSA. Art Gottlieb is a local historian on subjects of political and military history.  He was formerly a professional curator of naval history and the Technical Director of Exhibits at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York City.  In these roles, Mr. Gottlieb worked regularly with veterans of all services towards the creation of exhibits accurately illustrating the history of 20th century warfare. Mr. Gottlieb maintains a private practice as a Counselor and Certified Senior Advisor in Norwalk, CT, and offers Pro Bono counseling services to soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.  Mr. Gottlieb served as an Auxiliary Officer of the United States Coast Guard for 17 years and for 4 years was Commander of Flotilla 7-2, 1st District (Southern Region), Sector Long Island Sound North. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

This is a 5-session series. By registering once, you will be registered for the entire series! The series will be held bi-monthly through November 30, 2022. You will receive a separate Zoom link for each program.  If you have not received the Zoom information by the day before the program, please CHECK YOUR SPAM - especially Gmail users!

The Cold War: A Historical Perspective

The Cold War: A Historical Perspective (session 2 of 5)

The Cold War: A Historical Perspective (session 3 of 5)

Adult Book Discussion

Join us once a month for some lively discussion about great books! November's book discussion will be 'The Searcher' by Tana French.

Booklist: “Wearing the scars of both a painful divorce and 25 years with the Chicago Police Department, Cal Hooper buys a fixer-upper in Ireland, looking to decompress while reclaiming his dormant DIY skills. … An encounter with the sullen and mostly silent Trey, who becomes an able assistant on the remodeling project, leads to Cal agreeing to help search for the gender-fluid teen's brother, who has disappeared. … This is a fine thriller, but it's also a moving story of an unlikely friendship that grows from refinishing a ramshackle desk to rebuilding two nearly broken lives.”

Books are available a month prior to the program and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or via our Library-to-Go service.

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. If your library barcode is unavailable, please use your phone number in that space.

The Cold War: A Historical Perspective

The Cold War: A Historical Perspective (session 5 of 5)

Adult Book Discussion

Join us once a month for some lively discussion about great books! December's book discussion will be 'Deacon King Kong' by James McBride

Library Journal: “Why would a fumbling, aging deacon shuffle into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn and shoot the project's ruthless teen drug dealer in front of everyone? No one knows. Though he cannot even remember the incident, this man, known as Sportcoat, seemingly sets off a spiral of events that impact the lives of characters caught up in the turmoil of 1969. African American and Latinx residents, white neighbors, and the local police department find themselves caught between the Five Ends Baptist Church, the neighborhood's Italian mobsters, cultural misunderstandings, and the onslaught of drugs and their effects on the youth of this declining area.”

Books are available a month prior to the program and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or via our Library-to-Go service.

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. If your library barcode is unavailable, please use your phone number in that space.
