Virtual Author Talk with Fredrik Backman, 'The Winners'

Join us for an online chat with bestselling author Fredrik Backman as we discuss his outstanding body of work, including his breathtaking new novel, The Winners, the third installment of the Beartown series. In the beautifully written Beartown—which inspired the HBO series of the same name—a small town obsessed with the local junior hockey team is rocked by a shocking act of violence. As accusations and rumors fly, the town must grapple with its identity as never before.

The series continues and tensions rise when it’s rumored that the Beartown hockey team will be disbanded in Us Against You. The entire future of the team and the town hinges on an upcoming game that could change everything forever. Finally, the series comes to an evocative conclusion with The Winners. The Winners return to the close-knit, resilient community of Beartown for a story about first loves, second chances, and last goodbyes. In the two years since the events of Beartown, the residents must face difficult questions and determine just what they are willing to sacrifice for their home.

Adult Book Discussion

Join us once a month for some lively discussion about great books! December's book discussion will be 'Deacon King Kong' by James McBride

Library Journal: “Why would a fumbling, aging deacon shuffle into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn and shoot the project's ruthless teen drug dealer in front of everyone? No one knows. Though he cannot even remember the incident, this man, known as Sportcoat, seemingly sets off a spiral of events that impact the lives of characters caught up in the turmoil of 1969. African American and Latinx residents, white neighbors, and the local police department find themselves caught between the Five Ends Baptist Church, the neighborhood's Italian mobsters, cultural misunderstandings, and the onslaught of drugs and their effects on the youth of this declining area.”

Books are available a month prior to the program and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or via our Library-to-Go service.

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. If your library barcode is unavailable, please use your phone number in that space.

Virtual Author Talk with Dr. Nicole Eustace, 'Covered With Night'

You’re invited to explore early-American history during an online afternoon conversation with Pulitzer Prize winning historian Nicole Eustace as she discusses her 2022 award winning book Covered With Night: A Story of Murder and Indigenous Justice in Early America.

On the eve of a major treaty conference between Iroquois leaders and European colonists in the distant summer of 1722, two white fur traders attacked an Indigenous hunter and left him for dead near Conestoga, Pennsylvania. Though virtually forgotten today, this act of brutality set into motion a remarkable series of criminal investigations and cross-cultural negotiations that challenged the definition of justice in early America. In Covered with Night, Dr. Eustace reconstructs the crime and its aftermath, bringing us into the overlapping worlds of white colonists and Indigenous peoples in this formative period.

Classics Book Club

The Classics Book Club meets bi-monthly to discuss classic books.

Books are available a month prior to the program and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or via our Library-to-Go Service. This Month our selection is Absalom, Absalom! by William Faulkner

From Goodreads: "Published in 1936, Absalom, Absalom! is considered by many to be William Faulkner's masterpiece. Although the novel's complex and fragmented structure poses considerable difficulty to readers, the book's literary merits place it squarely in the ranks of America's finest novels. The story concerns Thomas Sutpen, a poor man who finds wealth and then marries into a respectable family. His ambition and extreme need for control bring about his ruin and the ruin of his family. Sutpen's story is told by several narrators, allowing the reader to observe variations in the saga as it is recounted by different speakers. This unusual technique spotlights one of the novel's central questions: To what extent can people know the truth about the past?"

Registration is required to receive Zoom information. If your library barcode is unavailable, please use your phone number in that space.

Adult Book Discussion

Join us once a month for some lively discussion about great books! January's book discussion will be 'Black Buck' by Mateo Askaripour

Booklist: “After being recruited as the only Black employee at Sumwun, a questionable start-up with a bizarre, cult-like atmosphere (replete with daily chanting), Darren is quickly christened Buck and absorbed into the increasingly high-pressure and often racist inner workings of the company. While he tries to square his growing discomfort in his new role in this strange, morally dubious workplace with the expectations of his family and friends, tragedy strikes, and Darren secretly begins a rival start-up focusing not only on training people of color to enter the white world of elite sales but also to revolutionize the industry.”

Books are available a month prior to the program and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or via our Library-to-Go service.

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. If your library barcode is unavailable, please use your phone number in that space.

Adult Book Discussion

Join us once a month for some lively discussion about great books! February's book discussion will be ‘A Rising Man’ by Abir Mukherjee.

Booklist: “A newcomer to Calcutta in 1919, former Scotland Yard detective Captain Sam Wyndham is assigned a potentially explosive murder case and immediately senses gaping holes in his knowledge of Indian culture, local British politics, and urban geography. Alexander MacAuley, the lieutenant-governor's aide, lies dead in an alley behind a brothel, his throat slit and with a threatening note stuffed in his mouth. Given that rumors of impending rebellion against the Raj have put the British locals on high alert, the Amritsar Massacre is only days away, this case demands a quick resolution. ...”  Booklist

March's book discussion will be ‘Lincoln Highway’ by Amor Towles.

Booklist: “...Convicted of accidentally killing a classmate who was taunting him, 18-year-old Emmett Watson has been released a few months early because of his father's death, and is transported home to Nebraska by the camp's warden, who unknowingly brings along two work-camp stowaways in the trunk of his car. Just as Emmett is about to head west along the transcontinental Lincoln Highway with his solemn eight-year-old brother, Billy, stowaways Duchess and Woolly take off toward New York with Emmett's prized baby-blue Studebaker, in which Emmett has hidden all the money he has in the world. Emmett and Billy hop a boxcar in pursuit, in a convoluted chase … leading up to an ending that is bound to provoke discussion.”

Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. If your library barcode is unavailable, please use your phone number in that space.

Adult Book Discussion

Join us once a month for some lively discussion about great books! April's book discussion will be ‘Cloud Cuckoo Land’ by Anthony Doerr.

Library Journal: “Doerr's … book … takes its name from an imagined realm referenced in Aristophanes's play The Birds. In present-day Idaho, Korean War veteran Zeno directs five energetic fifth graders in the production of a play called Cloud Cuckoo Land, which he reconstructed from an ancient Greek novel that he'd translated, even as activist teenager Seymour plans an attack centered on the public library where they rehearse. The play is connected to a young orphan named Anna dwelling in Constantinople as it falls to the Ottomans; a Balkans village boy named Omeir who supports the sultan's attack with his team of oxen; and Konstance, who decades in the future travels on an interstellar spacecraft headed for exoplanet Beta Oph2. … What results is a glorious golden mesh of stories that limns the transformative power of literature and our need both to dream big and to arrive back home in a world that will eventually flow on without us.”

May's book discussion will be ‘Project Hail Mary’ by Andy Weir.

Publishers Weekly:  “Bestseller Weir (The Martian) delivers a suspenseful portrait of human ingenuity and resilience in this powerful narrative of a desperate effort to save Earth. Ryland Grace awakens from a coma with no memories of his identity or how he came to be alone on a spaceship. Weir creates instant engagement by toggling between Grace's efforts to make sense of his present circumstances and flashbacks that gradually paint an unsettling picture of his life before. … Weir cleverly doles out pieces of Grace's backstory and information about the mission that landed him in space, tossing in curveballs and judiciously using humor to break the tension as the story builds to an unexpectedly moving ending.”

Books are available a month prior to the program and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or via our Library-to-Go service.

Adult Book Discussion

Join us once a month for some lively discussion about great books! June's book discussion will be ‘In Love’ by Amy Bloom.

Library Journal: “Bloom gives the reader full access to her experience of coming to terms with the onset of her husband's Alzheimer's disease and his decision to seek physician-assisted death. Bloom interweaves this experience with recollections of their past together as a mid-life couple in which each found their true life partner. Bloom's vivid imagery puts the readers in each scene; although written with a loving heart, this is an honest account that's not seen through rose-colored glasses. Of unique interest is the couple's experience of physician-assisted death, which they had to carry out in Switzerland instead of the United States, where access to assisted death is limited and cumbersome. Far from exploiting her husband's story, Bloom's memoir is a final homage to the man she loved; she says that her husband asked her to write this book because she was the only person who could do it with her particular perspective.”

Books are available a month prior to the program and can be picked up at the Circulation Desk or via our Library-to-Go service.
Registration is required to receive the Zoom link. If your library barcode is unavailable, please use your phone number in that space.
