The Testaments by Margaret Atwood

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

SHORTLISTED FOR THE BOOKER PRIZE

Margaret Atwood's dystopian masterpiece, The Handmaid's Tale, has become a modern classic—and now she brings the iconic story to a dramatic conclusion in this riveting sequel.

More than fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results.

Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third voice: a woman who wields power through the ruthless accumulation and deployment of secrets.

As Atwood unfolds The Testaments, she opens up the innermost workings of Gilead as each woman is forced to come to terms with who she is, and how far she will go for what she believes.

Queen Anne’s Revenge: Exploring the Legend of Blackbeard

For a brief period of time in the early 1700s, Blackbeard the Pirate terrorized the seas around the Bahamas, the Caribbean and the Carolina coast. Little is known of this infamous historical figure, including his real name, but his reputation as a brutal force on the high seas has long outlived him. In 1718, shortly after the famous blockade of Charleston South Carolina, Blackbeard ran two of his vessels aground at near Beaufort Inlet, North Carolina, including the Queen Anne's Revenge. For nearly 300 years, this shipwreck has eluded searchers who have come here to find the long lost flagship of Blackbeard’s fleet.

But recently, a wreck presumed to be that of the Queen Anne’s Revenge has been found and is currently being recovered by teams of researchers and archaeologists. Join Eco-Photo Explorers on an adventure to examine the legend of Blackbeard and to dive on the wreck of his most famous ship.

The information in this lecture teaches the skills necessary to remain centered and focused during confrontations, arguments, or conversations in order to generate cooperation and voluntary compliance from others. These tactics are especially useful when dealing with hostile, angry, upset, frustrated or disgruntled people. The communication techniques and principles of conflict management offer specific, powerful, and usable strategies to resolve tense situations while maintaining control and safety.
While the course, which was originally designed for police officers, teaches students how to handle difficult situations when dealing with the public and in the workplace, it also provides useful and practical techniques that will help when interacting with employees, peers, clients and even family members by providing leverage and an edge in any verbal exchange. It is invaluable when dealing with members of the public.

Don Longo is a Licensed Private Investigator and Subject Matter Expert (SME) in Active Shooter Incidents and in Domestic and International Anti-Crime Techniques and Tactics.  He specializes in Active Shooter Incident prevention, preparation, response and survival, and since 2012 has provided Active Shooter Incident training for thousands at schools, workplace environments, houses of worship, local businesses, libraries, and associations and organizations. His lectures, seminars, and workshops on Active Shooter Incidents, Verbal Judo Conflict Management Techniques, and International Travel Anti-Crime Methods have drawn huge audiences from Law Enforcement and First Responders, schools and businesses, and members of the general public.
