Immanuel Lutheran Church: Grand Ledge Community Read

Grand Ledge community churches and the Library are hosting a Community Read and weekly small-group discussions  of the book "Waking Up White: and Finding Myself In the Story of Race" by Debby Irving. Copies of the book are reserved at the Grand Ledge Area District Library--ask at the Circulation desk for the Community Read book.

"By sharing her sometimes cringe-worthy struggle to understand racism and racial tensions, Irving offers a fresh perspective on bias, stereotypes, manners, and tolerance. As Irving unpacks her own long-held beliefs about colorblindness, being a good person, and wanting to "help", she reveals how each of these well-intentioned mindsets actually perpetuated her ill-conceived ideas about race."

Host: Immanuel Lutheran Church 517 S Clinton St, Grand Ledge, MI 48837

Crafting For A Cause

Crafting for a Cause is a casual, friendly group that serves the community with hand-made projects.  Many members work with yarn but other craft forms are always welcome.  The group offers suggestions for projects to be made with your materials.  It's a great way to use your yarn stash on small items like hats and dishcloths.  The donations benefit area programs including,  but not limited to, Grand Ledge Food and Clothing Bank and Timber Creek Ranch, a life-skills residential home for young men.  The group is always looking for new members to produce donations and new groups to serve.  All skill levels are welcome.  For information, contact Cheryl at ourdailybread360@gmail.com   Please note Crafting for a Cause as subject

Grand Ledge Food Bank always needs donations of the following:

  • Toilet paper
  • Paper towel
  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • Small bottles of dish soap
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Deodorant

Stress Busters! presented by Families First at Community Mental Health

Welcome to Stress Busters!
Everyone has big feelings at times. Children and adolescents who learn to manage those feelings at an earlier age have a big advantage in life. It’s an important skill for growing minds!
Families Forward at Community Mental Health Authority of Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham Counties is offering fun and engaging skills-based groups, meeting right at the Grand Ledge Area District Library. These groups will help youth of all ages learn practical skills to help them manage life stress, improve their social skills, and have fun doing it! New participants are always welcome – come join us! No registration necessary

Please Note: no sessions on Sept. 19, Oct 31, or Dec. 19.

  • Tues., 3pm: Ages 3-6 & caregivers: This group focuses on easy activities children can do to help feel better when they are facing big feelings. Learn about mindfully paying attention to movement and breathing, using artwork to express feelings, and how laughter helps us feel better.
  • Tues., 4pm: Ages 7-10 & Ages 11-14: Older children learn about the impact of stress on the body, identify common sources of stress, and learn to use a variety of methods to manage stress levels. Practice valuable social skills such as respecting personal space, using good listening, learning to effectively communicate, interpreting body language and more.

New!  Join us for "Meet & Pizza Treat": Oct. 3, Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Jan 9, Feb 6, Mar 5, April 9 and May 4!

Immanuel Lutheran Church: Grand Ledge Community Read

Grand Ledge community churches and the Library are hosting a Community Read and weekly small-group discussions  of the book "Waking Up White: and Finding Myself In the Story of Race" by Debby Irving. How It All Started: A Brief History of Dystopian Literature [Registration Req.]

What intrigues us about the idea of a dysfunctional society? What does it reflect on our own? He'll also read a short excert from his new novel Rules of Order.

For more information, contact Jody Nelson at 517-346-8094.

  • Deodorant

Six Voices in Autumn: Poets Speak

Come enjoy coffee, conversation and audience participation for an afternoon of poetry, fun and ideas. This reading presents different perspectives on a general topic and provide the audience with different ways people regard some concepts. Topics include: Nature, Place, Event, Relationships & Self.  The six poets will rotate reading one poem on each subject in a quick-paced, expressive poetry reading.=

  • Nature:  the physical nature of the world whether creeping through an urban landscape or blossoming full country, whether your backyard or a natural event, whether animal, mineral, or plant.
  • Place—the idea of place can be a real or imaginary place, a place of comfort or distress, an ode to a town, venue, memory of place—a farm, a home, a city, a part of a city, a church, a protest at a capital, place you visited, a lost home, etc.
  • Event—anything from an election, the fair, a poetry reading experience, a marriage, a church event, a street fair, a game, an everyday event, anything that happened public or private.
  • Relationships—how we manage the difficulties of interacting with family, friends, lovers, children, strangers, co-workers, store clerks, dating, etc.

Welcome to Stress Busters!
Everyone has big feelings at times. Children and adolescents who learn to manage those feelings at an earlier age have a big advantage in life. It’s an important skill for growing minds!
