1000 Books Before Kindergarten

a deer reading a book

For all kids from birth up through entering kindergarten.

The single most important thing you can do to prepare your children to read is to read to them every day. Research proves that children need to hear 1000 books before they begin to learn to read independently.

Reading to children will: increase their vocabulary, increase their listening and narrative skills, help to instill in them self-awareness and confidence, impart an understanding of their place in the world.

When the Library is open, you can visit the Children's Room to sign up in person. Online registration is available on the library calendar. After your child has read their first 100 books, one of the rewards and incentives for this program is a 1000 Books Before Kindergarten tote bag!

Download & Print: Title Log (for parents), and Color-In Log (for kids).

For more information, including an Early Literacy Practices for Parents download, please visit www.goffstownlibrary.com.

Author Talk: Evening with Romance Authors Ali Hazelwood, Nikki Payne, and Denise Williams

Authors Ali Hazelwood (The Love Hypothesis), Nikki Payne (Pride and Protest), and Denise Williams (How to Fail at Flirting) will discuss their latest romance novels in this unforgettable virtual panel discussion followed by audience Q&A.

Ali Hazelwood is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Love, Theoretically, and The Love Hypothesis, as well as a writer of peer-reviewed articles about brain science, in which no one makes out and the ever after is not always happy. Originally from Italy, she lived in Germany and Japan before moving to the US to pursue a PhD in neuroscience. When Ali is not at work, she can be found running, eating cake pops, or watching sci-fi movies with her three feline overlords (and her slightly-less-feline husband). Her latest is Bride, a paranormal romance with a February 6, 2024 release date.

By day, Nikki Payne is a curious tech anthropologist asking the right questions to deliver better digital services. By night, she dreams of ways to subvert canon literature. Nikki is a member of Smut U, a premium feminist writing collective, and a cat lady with no cats. Her latest is Sex, Lies and Sensibility, a contemporary diverse retelling of Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility coming out February 13, 2024.

Denise Williams wrote her first book in the second grade. I Hate You and its sequel, I Still Hate You, featured a tough, funny heroine, a quirky hero, witty banter, and a dragon. Minus the dragons, these are still the books she likes to write. After penning those early works, she finished second grade and eventually earned a PhD. Denise lives in Iowa and can usually be found reading, writing, or thinking about love stories. Her books have been listed on Indie Next, as a Library Reads pick, and received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Library Journal. Her latest is Technically Yours, the story of a second-chance romance set in a STEM-industry workplace, published in December 2023.

Hosted by the Tewksbury Public Library.

Register to receive the Zoom link the day before the event.

Evening Book Discussion Group

Build community and share your love of reading by joining the Goffstown Public Library's Evening Book Discussion, held on the first Tuesday of every month. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome!

This month we're reading: Rules of Civility by Amor Towles

"On the last night of 1937, twenty-five-year-old Katey Kontent is in a second-rate Greenwich Village jazz bar when Tinker Grey, a handsome banker, happens to sit down at the neighboring table. This chance encounter and its startling consequences propel Katey on a year-long journey into the upper echelons of New York society—where she will have little to rely upon other than a bracing wit and her own brand of cool nerve. With its sparkling depiction of New York’s social strata, its intricate imagery and themes, and its immensely appealing characters, Rules of Civility won the hearts of readers and critics alike."

Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library, and some may be available through our e-library. Contact the meeting's moderator for more information or if you need help accessing this month's book. Large print and audiobooks may also be available.

Celebrate Freedom of Information Day

"Now as always in our history, reading is among our greatest freedoms. The freedom to read and write is almost the only means for making generally available ideas or manners of expression that can initially command only a small audience. The written word is the natural medium for the new idea and the untried voice from which come the original contributions to social growth. It is essential to the extended discussion that serious thought requires, and to the accumulation of knowledge and ideas into organized collections." Read the American Library Association's (ALA) Freedom to Read Statement at ala.org.

Freedom of Information (FOI) Day is an annual event on or near March 16, the birthday of James Madison, who is widely regarded as the Father of the Constitution and the foremost advocate for openness in government. Each year, the James Madison Award and the Eileen Cooke State & Local Madison Award are presented by ALA on Freedom of Information Day to recognize those individuals or groups that have championed, protected, and promoted public access to government information and the public’s right to know.

This month we're reading: Between Two Kingdoms by Suleika Jaouad

“In the summer after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was preparing, as they say in commencement speeches, to enter “the real world.” She had fallen in love and moved to Paris to pursue her dream of becoming a war correspondent. The real world she found, however, would take her into a very different kind of conflict zone.

It started with an itch—first on her feet, then up her legs, like a thousand invisible mosquito bites. Next came the exhaustion, and the six-hour naps that only deepened her fatigue. Then a trip to the doctor and, a few weeks shy of her twenty-third birthday, a diagnosis: leukemia, with a 35 percent chance of survival. Just like that, the life she had imagined for herself had gone up in flames. By the time Jaouad flew home to New York, she had lost her job, her apartment, and her independence. She would spend much of the next four years in a hospital bed, fighting for her life and chronicling the saga in a column for The New York Times.

When Jaouad finally walked out of the cancer ward—after countless rounds of chemo, a clinical trial, and a bone marrow transplant—she was, according to the doctors, cured. But as she would soon learn, a cure is not where the work of healing ends; it’s where it begins. She had spent the past 1,500 days in desperate pursuit of one goal—to survive. And now that she’d done so, she realized that she had no idea how to live. How would she reenter the world and live again? How could she reclaim what had been lost? Jaouad embarked—with her new best friend, Oscar, a scruffy terrier mutt—on a 100-day, 15,000-mile road trip across the country. She set out to meet some of the strangers who had written to her during her years in the hospital: a teenage girl in Florida also recovering from cancer; a teacher in California grieving the death of her son; a death-row inmate in Texas who’d spent his own years confined to a room.

What she learned on this trip is that the divide between sick and well is porous, that the vast majority of us will travel back and forth between these realms throughout our lives. Between Two Kingdoms is a profound chronicle of survivorship and a fierce, tender, and inspiring exploration of what it means to begin again.”

Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library, and some may be available through our e-library. Contact the meeting's moderator for more information or if you need help accessing this month's book. Large print and audiobooks may also be available.

Afternoon Book Discussion Group

Join fellow book enthusiasts on the third Wednesday of every month for our Afternoon Book Group. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome.

This month we're reading: The Passenger by Cormac McCarthy

“1980, PASS CHRISTIAN, MISSISSIPPI: It is three in the morning when Bobby Western zips the jacket of his wet suit and plunges from the Coast Guard tender into darkness. His dive light illuminates the sunken jet, nine bodies still buckled in their seats, hair floating, eyes devoid of speculation. Missing from the crash site are the pilot’s flight bag, the plane’s black box, and the tenth passenger. But how? A collateral witness to machinations that can only bring him harm, Western is shadowed in body and spirit—by men with badges; by the ghost of his father, inventor of the bomb that melted glass and flesh in Hiroshima; and by his sister, the love and ruin of his soul.

Traversing the American South, from the garrulous barrooms of New Orleans to an abandoned oil rig off the Florida coast, The Passenger is a breathtaking novel of morality and science, the legacy of sin, and the madness that is human consciousness.”

Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library, and some may be available through our e-library. National Volunteer Week

At the Goffstown Public Library, we are honored to work with many dedicated and passionate volunteers: Joan, who brings her dog Candy to us for children to read aloud and improve their skills; the Friends of the Goffstown Public Library, a small and mighty group of volunteers who raise money to fully fund our Museum Pass Program, gingerbread decorating workshops, and so much more; and members of the Goffstown Public Library Foundation, a not-for-profit organization formed to raise funds to support the capital needs of the Goffstown Public Library. Finally, the Library Board of Trustees spend many personal hours meeting, advocating, and planning for the future of our Library. We applaud you all!

National Volunteer Week is celebrated annually to: recognize those individuals who give of themselves, and to promote volunteerism in every community. This week was established in 1974 by a proclamation signed by President Richard Nixon, and the Points of Light Foundation encourages volunteerism, with this poignant statement: "Volunteerism empowers individuals to find their purpose, to take their passion and turn it into meaningful change. When each of us, in our own way, answers the call to make a difference, we make progress in solving our most persistent problems, and create stronger communities and a more just society."

If you're interested in volunteering, please contact the Friends at friends@goffstownlibrary.com.

Evening Book Discussion Group

Build community and share your love of reading by joining the Goffstown Public Library's Evening Book Discussion, held on the first Tuesday of every month. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome!

This month we're reading: Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge by Erica Armstrong Dunbar

"A startling and eye-opening look into America’s First Family, "Never Caught" is the powerful narrative of Ona Judge, George and Martha Washington’s runaway slave who risked everything to escape the nation’s capital and reach freedom. When George Washington was elected president, he reluctantly left his beloved Mount Vernon to serve in Philadelphia, the temporary seat of the nation’s capital. In setting up his household he took Tobias Lear, his celebrated secretary and eight slaves, including Ona Judge, about whom little has been written. As he grew accustomed to Northern ways, there was one change he couldn’t get his arms around: Pennsylvania law required enslaved people be set free after six months of residency in the state. Rather than comply, Washington decided to circumvent the law. Every six months he sent the slaves back down south just as the clock was about to expire. Though Ona Judge lived a life of relative comfort, the few pleasantries she was afforded were nothing compared to freedom, a glimpse of which she encountered first-hand in Philadelphia. So, when the opportunity presented itself, Judge left everything she knew to escape to New England. Yet freedom would not come without its costs. At just twenty-two years old, Ona became the subject of an intense manhunt led by George Washington, who used his political and personal contacts to recapture his property. With impeccable research, historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar weaves a powerful tale and offers fascinating new scholarship on how one young woman risked it all to gain freedom from the famous founding father."

Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library, and some may be available through our e-library. Contact the meeting's moderator for more information or if you need help accessing this month's book. Large print and audiobooks may also be available.

No registration required.

Afternoon Book Discussion Group

Join fellow book enthusiasts on the third Wednesday of every month for our Afternoon Book Group. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome.

This month we're reading: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot

“Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells—taken without her knowledge—became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects; helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping; and have been bought and sold by the billions. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave.

Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family—past and present—is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family—especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah. Deborah was consumed with questions: Had scientists cloned her mother? Had they killed her to harvest her cells? And if her mother was so important to medicine, why couldn’t her children afford health insurance?

Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences.”

Physical copies of book group titles are available on a first-come, first-served basis from the Goffstown Public Library, and some may be available through our e-library.

Build community and share your love of reading by joining the Goffstown Public Library's Evening Book Discussion, held on the first Tuesday of every month. Conversations are casual and supportive; new members are always welcome!

This month we're reading: No Two Persons by Erica Bauermeister

"Alice has always wanted to be a writer. Her talent is innate, but her stories remain safe and detached until a devastating event breaks her heart open, and she creates a stunning debut novel. Her words, in turn, find their way to readers, from a teenager hiding her homelessness to a free diver pushing himself beyond endurance, an artist furious at the world around her, a bookseller in search of love, and a widower rent by grief. Each one is drawn into Alice’s novel; each one discovers something different that alters their perspective and presents new pathways forward for their lives. Together, their stories reveal how books can affect us in the most beautiful and unexpected of ways—and how we are all more closely connected to one another than we might think."
