Children's Room Closure

On Friday 8/18, portions of the Children’s Room, Children’s Workroom (where staff offices are located), and Community Rooms, as well as the entirety of the Children’s Program room flooded during a late summer storm. Construction began Monday, 9/25 to remove and replace damaged sections of walls and flooring in the above-mentioned areas.

A limited selection of children’s books is available in the lobby. No toys, games, or seating space is available in the lobby.  Please remember that the teen room is exclusively for teens in grades 6 and above.

We will not be hosting any Children’s Library programs in November with the exception of storytime at Willard House, which is off-site, and Young Scientists, which will be held in the historic reading room.  December room access and programs are still TBD.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding, and your continued kindness toward staff as we all struggle during this unprecedented event.

Reads Well with Others Book Group

Join us on Monday February 26th at 6:30pm, in Room 228 for the “Reads Well with Others” Book Group discussion of Must Love Flowers by Debbie Macomber.

Description: “Joan Sample is not living the life she expected. Now a widow and an empty-nester, she has become by her own admission something of a recluse. But after another birthday spent alone, she is finally inclined to listen to her sister, who has been begging Joan to reengage with the world. With her support, Joan gathers the courage to take some long-awaited steps: hiring someone to tame her overgrown garden, joining a grief support group, and even renting out a room to a local college student. Before long Joan is starting to feel a little like herself again. Across town, Maggie Herbert works mornings as a barista, tending to impatient customers before rushing to afternoon nursing classes. She's been living with her alcoholic father, ducking his temperamental outbursts and struggling to pay the household bills. But her circumstances brighten when she finds a room for rent in Joan's home. In the unexpected warmth of her new situation, Maggie finds a glimmer of hope for a better life. But will Maggie's budding attraction to one of her favorite customers ruin the harmony she's only recently found with Joan? Meanwhile, what is Joan to make of the mysterious landscaper who's been revitalizing her garden--a man who seems to harbor a past loss of his own? As Maggie and Joan confront unfamiliar life choices, they find themselves leaning on each other in surprising ways--discovering in the process that "family" is often just another word for love in all its forms"—

Copies of the books are available in regular print, large print, audio on CD and Playaway so stop by the library to pick up a physical copy.  It is also available through Overdrive / Libby as an eBook and eAudio.

If you have any questions, contact the Grafton Public Library at info@graftonlibrary.org

Inspirational Book Group and Guided Meditation

Join us on Tuesday February 27th at 6:30pm, in Room 228 for the Inspirational Book Group and Guided Meditation discussion of The Good Life: Lessons from the World's Longest Scientific Study of Happiness by Robert Waldinger and Marc Schulz.

The stronger our relationships, the more likely we are to live happy, satisfying, and overall healthier lives. In fact, the Harvard Study of Adult Development reveals that the strength of our connections with others can predict the health of both our bodies and our brains as we go through life."--

Copies of the books are available in regular print, and as an audio on CD so stop by the library to pick up a physical copy.  It is also available through Overdrive / Libby as an eBook and eAudio.

Bookworms Bookclub Grades 4-5

Join Ms. Kristin for a book discussion for kids in grades 4 and 5. Copies of the book The Wednesday Wars by Gary Schmidt will be available for pick-up at the library.

Seventh grader Holling Hoodhood isn't happy. He is sure his new teacher, Mrs. Baker, hates his guts. Throughout the school year, Holling strives to get a handle on the Shakespeare plays Mrs. Baker assigns him to read on his own time, and to figure out the enigmatic Mrs. Baker. At home, Holling's domineering father is obsessed with his business image and disregards his family.

As the Vietnam War turns lives upside down, Holling comes to admire and respect both Shakespeare and Mrs. Baker, who have more to offer him than he imagined. And when his family is on the verge of coming apart, he also discovers his loyalty to his sister, and his ability to stand up to his father when it matters most.

Each month in Holling's tumultuous seventh-grade year is a chapter in this quietly powerful coming-of-age novel set in suburban Long Island during the late '60s.

Please register below. If the event is full, you may still submit this form to be placed on the waiting list.

Join STEM Beginnings for a 6-week series for children, ages 3-6. Children will learn STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) concepts through hands-on activities, story time and simple experiments. Please register with YFCP directly. Grafton Public Library will not be registering attendees for this class.

  • All children, ages 3-6, must be registered (including siblings) to attend in-person classes.
  • Parents/caregivers are expected to supervise and help their child during class but may leave the room to care for an infant/busy toddler.
  • Materials for the lesson will be provided by STEM Beginnings for registered children, ages 3-6, however, if extra materials are available due to absences, the teacher may share materials with siblings.
  • Siblings are welcome to watch and listen to the story but we ask that parents/caregivers help to manage disruptive behavior.
  • Space is limited to 12 children, ages 3-6. Please email or call the librarian if you can no longer attend so that a family on the waitlist can be contacted.

  • Please limit cell phone use and talking to one another while the STEM Beginnings teacher is presenting the lesson.
  • Adults and children should not attend class if not feeling well to avoid spreading illness to others. If your child has a cold with a thick runny nose or other contagious illnesses, we ask that he/she remain at home for as long as the symptoms exist. If a child has a fever, please wait 24 hours after the fever to attend class.

Thank you for your support of YFCP and STEM Beginnings Program!
