Mother Goose on the Loose

Join the happy circle with Kay Lyons at a lap-sit story hour for children age 3 and under (with a grown-up!) every Friday morning at the GPL.  Children's Librarian Kay Lyons reads books, leads the group in hand rhymes, and uses puppets to teach animal sounds and other concepts to the very young.  Children and grown-ups shake rattles, tap rhythm sticks, wave colored scarves, ring bells, and do knee bounces to simple sing-along tunes that everyone learns together.

Go on the loose with Mother Goose!  It's so much fun!  Each session is 45 minutes, 30 minutes of structured activity and 15 minutes of visiting time.  No sign-up is required and the program is free of charge, thanks to the Friends of the GPL.

Local Author Talk -- Eveline MacDougall
Fiery Hope remembers how a group of friends, activists acquainted through anti-apartheid work, gathered one wintry day in Wendell, Massachusetts to share the joyful power of South African freedom songs. The first informal session in 1988 led to regular rehearsals, and when the singers accepted an invitation to perform publicly, they needed a name for their burgeoning chorus. A South African member suggested Amandla, a Zulu word for power.

Over three decades, hundreds of chorus members of all ages have brought songs of human rights, justice, and peace to venues large and small. Singers collaborated with venerable leaders including César Chávez, Pete Seeger, Nelson Mandela, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Wally and Juanita Nelson, and Malala Yousafzai. Singers made profound connections with schoolchildren, prisoners, elders, and terminally ill patients. Astounded in 2019 by xenophobia and growing cultural divides, chorus members felt inspired to relinquish the name Amandla and become Fiery Hope, signaling unquenchable commitment to human rights and honoring the planet we call home.

At age twenty-three, author and Fiery Hope director Eveline MacDougall began a lifelong journey as chorus founder and director, drawing on musical knowledge and traditions from her large and energetic family on both sides of the US-Canada border.

Go on the loose with Mother Goose!  It's so much fun!  Each session is 45 minutes, 30 minutes of structured activity and 15 minutes of visiting time.  No sign-up is required and the program is free of charge, thanks to the Friends of the GPL.

Barry Deitz Presents: Universal's Classic Monsters

We all know them and love them: the great Universal Monsters! Here are the stories behind Frankenstein, Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon! We'll be  following the making of those 1930s classic horror films and look at what other filmmakers over the past 90 years have created using those iconic characters and stories.   From Frankenstein's wail "It's alive, it's alive!" to Count Dracula's "I don't drink ... wine," these are great movies from Hollywood's true golden age.

First Wednesday Speaker Series: New Traditions for Thanksgiving

For many of us, preparing Thanksgiving dinner can be filled with anxiety. Join chef Liz Barbour as she explores the many types of turkeys available, the various ways to prepare them, and how to create a menu that is easy and delicious. Following her discussion, Liz will demonstrate 2 of her favorite side dishes and offer samples for everyone.

Liz is an entertaining communicator whose warm, relaxed approach tofood and cooking resonates with her students. With stories and instruction, she shares her experiences as a working chef to demystify the cooking process for her students. She is a firm believer that any home cook can prepare fresh, flavorful meals with confidence if taught just a few basic but important skills.
Liz built her cooking career in a variety of Boston's catering and restaurant settings. After starting her family, she reentered the food world as a cooking instructor with Liz Barbour's Creative Feast. Her recipes and teaching style connected with her community, and Liz soon had a large following of loyal students. She is a regular guest on New Hampshire’s WMUR Cook’s Corner and her cooking demonstrations and recipes are featured in various publications including Where Women Cook, New Hampshire Magazine, the Nashua Telegraph, and The Hippo Press.

Discussion and cooking demonstration.  Attendance limit of 30 on this program.  Registration by November 1 is required.

Magic Tree House Book Club

This Group meets the 3rd Thursday of each month, enjoying the time traveling adventures of Jack & Annie. Come with us as we explore the time and place our young heroes find themselves, through art and other activities, with Kay Lyons & Robin Doran. This month, the Magic Tree House whisks them back to the time of the American Civil War, in Civil War on Sunday, book #21. There they meet a famous nurse named Clara Barton and do their best to help wounded soldiers. It is their hardest journey in time yet—and the one that will make the most difference
