VIRTUAL: A Brief History of the Coast Guard

Massachusetts is the birthplace of the Coast Guard. America’s oldest seagoing service has an exceptionally rich history and those who have served in the Coast Guard here in Massachusetts have made significant contributions to that history.  Most are aware of the role of Coast Guard men and women as first responders, law enforcement officers and boating safety experts but few know that some are oceanographers, combat veterans, arctic explorers and even astronauts.  Join Greg Ketchen, a retired U.S. Coast Guard Captain living in Osterville, MA.   He is a volunteer at the Coast Guard Heritage Museum located in Barnstable’s Old Customs House and has served as its president for the past six years.

Stories from the Revolution: Hanover in the War for Independence

This program, in honor of the 250 th Anniversary of the American Revolutionary War, tells the story of Hanover and its residents during the conflict. Stories from the Revolution uses original objects and documents from the Historical Society’s and other collections to illustrate how the War changed the lives of the people of Hanover. These are the stories of one town supporting the Patriot cause, a colonel who commanded a regiment through five years of warfare, a family that faced disease and struggle, a former slave who won his freedom, common soldiers who answered the call to service, some of whom never returned, and a general Town Meeting that voted in favor of Independence.

Sponsored by the Massachusetts Society of the Cincinnati

The John Curtis Free Library does not discriminate on the basis of disability and is committed to providing a reasonable modification to participate in our events, services or documentation. Contact Director Virginia Johnson @ 781-826-2972, ext. 6 or vjohnson@hanover.ocln.org at least two weeks before an event to arrange for modification or at any time if you need accessible documents.

Galileo: The Starry Messenger

In honor of the solar eclipse earlier this month, Galileo will be visiting!  Almost four hundred years ago, an unknown court mathematician in Italy opened that book and laid the foundation for modern science. Galileo Galilei turned his telescope to the heavens to discover mountains and craters on the moon, four moons of Jupiter, and countless stars never before seen. Even more significant was his method of observation and mathematical analysis. He taught future scientists the way to discover the laws of nature. For more than 40 years, actor Mike Francis has been performing throughout North America on stage, film and   television. New England stage appearances include performances at Merrimack Rep, the New Rep, the Charles Playhouse and many other venues.
