The Language of Bodies Book Club Discussion

The Cummings Foundation will provide books (free to all registrants) for a community book study the Buttonwoods Museum is co-hosting with the Haverhill Public Library.

"Maddie Wells' life spirals out of control after the murder of her wife Char, a transgender woman of color. Hunger for revenge drives Maddie to take a job at a wax museum near the murderer's hometown, where she studies revenge and plots how to strike back. Befriending the murderer's wife is the first stage in Maddie's plan to make him pay.

The Language of Bodies probes the seduction of vengeance using vivid, sensual imagery to explore how love transcends the particulars of body parts, and how revenge blurs the line between victim and perpetrator, hero and villain. It's a gorgeous, dark tale about the enduring power of love, and the human spirit's unwillingness to give up."

Suzanne DeWitt Hall is a freelance writer, a HuffPost blogger, and author of the children’s picture book Rumplepimple. She is mildly obsessed with vintage cookbooks and the intersection of sexuality and theology. She lives joyously with her wife Diane, a cat named Chicken, and a wire fox terrier.

This program is co-hosted by the Buttonwoods Museum and HPL.

This event is sponsored by a grant from the Cummings Foundation.

The Original Bucky Lew: Basketball's First Black Professional

Bucky Lew should be more than a footnote. Google him and you’ll see he became the first Black pro basketball player in a white league when he took the floor for Lowell in 1902. Chris Boucher looked deeper and learned he later became the first coach, general manager, franchise owner, and lead referee.

Join Chris in Haverhill where Lew played for many years to hear about Lew’s achievements as well as the obstacles he faced to get there. Chris will also discuss his neighborhood connection to the man whose full story is only now being told for the first time.

Chris Boucher is a novelist who lives in Lowell. The Original Bucky Lew is his third book.
