Owls Up Close - Younger Audiences and Families

Join Marcia and Mark Wilson from Eyes On Owls as they present their live owl program, "Owls Up Close." It’s New England’s favorite wildlife program!

This unique presentation has been a library favorite for decades! For young audiences, the show starts with an interactive reading of a big book version of “Owl Babies." The magic begins when everybody sees each of 6 live owls up close, as they perch safely on Marcia's glove near the audience. Everyone gets to practice the owls’ calls during lively hooting lessons! The Wilsons highlight the owls’ unique adaptations, habitats and behaviors in the wild, while sharing tips on how you can find signs of owls around you. Questions are taken once the owls come out. Shows run 45 - 60 minutes.

Attendees may purchase copies of Mark's award-winning book, Owling, and The Snowy Owl Scientist, signed and personalized by the author, in person after the program or by emailing eyesonowls@earthlink.net. Each book is available for $20, cash or credit.

This session is for children under the age of 8 and families. Adults, teens, and children ages 8+ are encouraged to attend the 1:00pm session.

Please register for this event.

VIRTUAL: The LGBTQ+ History of Massachusetts

**PLEASE NOTE THIS IS A VIRTUAL PROGRAM THAT WILL TAKE PLACE VIA ZOOM. Registrants will receive a link to access the Zoom Meeting via email.**

Join Joan Ilacqua, Executive Director of The History Project, for a presentation and conversation exploring the history of LGBTQ+ people, community, organizing, and change in Massachusetts. Drawing on sources like court cases, diaries, letters, photographs, videos, oral histories, and more, Ilacqua will take you through over 400 years of history -- from romantic friendships to Boston marriages, the gay liberation front to marriage equality and beyond -- all in one hour!

The History Project is Boston's LGBTQ+ community archives. A non-profit established in 1980, The History Project documents, preserves, and shares the history and stories of Massachusetts' LGBTQ+ community. Joan Ilacqua serves as its Executive Director. A graduate of UMass Boston's Public History master's program, Ilacqua sits on the Massachusetts State Historic Records Advisory Board. In her free time, she likes to read queer romance novels with her wife and cats and design subversive cross-stitch patterns.

Register directly on Zoom by clicking the link. Hosted by the Tewksbury Public Library, co-hosted by HPL. Sponsored by the Friends of the Tewksbury Public Library.

NOTE: This program will be recorded. All registrants will receive the recording via email within 24 hours of the program.

Sasha Issenberg discusses The Engagement: America's Quarter-Century Struggle Over Same-Sex Marriage

Join author Sasha Issenberg for a discussion of his book The Engagement: America's Quarter-Century Struggle Over Same-Sex Marriage.

On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that state bans on gay marriage were unconstitutional, making same-sex unions legal across the United States. But the road to that momentous decision was much longer than many know. In this definitive account, Sasha Issenberg vividly guides us through same-sex marriage’s unexpected path from the unimaginable to the inevitable.

Sasha Issenberg is the author of three previous books, on topics ranging from the global sushi business to medical tourism and the science of political campaigns. He covered the 2008 election as a national political reporter in the Washington bureau of The Boston Globe, the 2012 election for Slate, the 2016 election for Bloomberg Politics and Businessweek, and 2020 for The Recount. He is the Washington correspondent for Monocle, and has also written for New York magazine, The New York Times Magazine, and George, where he served as a contributing editor. He teaches in the political science department at UCLA.

Hosted by the Wilmington Memorial Library, co-hosted by HPL.

This program will take place on Zoom. Please click on the link to register.
