The Poe You May Not Know
3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
Phil Devlin, retired Haddam Killingworth history teacher, will discuss Edgar Allan Poe on Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020, at 3:30 PM at the Killingworth Library. Tuesday, Feb. 18 at 7 PM will be the snow date.

Born in the same year as Abraham Lincoln (1809), Poe only lived 40 years but in that short time, his influence both on literature and on popular culture has been enormous. This presentation will focus on Poe’s lasting contributions to literature and to popular culture as well as on his cosmology—a seldom discussed but important aspect of his view of the world. Poe’s theory of unity as embodied in his tales, poems, and in his essay entitled “Eureka,” contains, according to British philosopher and writer Colin Wilson, “some staggering, almost incredible insights” into the operation of the universe.

Come and learn more about this influential but often misunderstood man. This program is free, but space is limited. Please click below to register, or contact the library at 860-663-2000.

Tuesday Book Discussion
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Join us as we discuss Northland: a 4,000 Mile Journey Along America's Forgotten Border by Porter Fox.

The work describes Fox's 4,000 mile adventure along our U.S./Canadian boundary with an appreciation for both the area's history and its wildness. The main character for this journey is the land itself, an almost untouched wilderness of trees, lakes, rivers, mountains and more lakes.

The people woven into the narrative include the ghosts of long gone Indians, explorers, and fur traders. There is a balance of past and present as the author focuses equally on land and people. Fox's interviews with Native Americans and local businessmen get to the basics of their lives and philosophies without being intrusive.

Extra copies are available at the circulation desk. Newcomers always welcome!

6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Join us as we discuss Robicheaux by James Lee Burke.

Dave Robicheaux is a haunted man. From the acts he committed in Vietnam, to his battles with alcoholism, to the sudden loss of his beloved wife, Molly, his thoughts drift from one irreconcilable memory to the next. Images of ghosts pepper his reality. Robicheaux’s only beacon remains serving as a detective in New Iberia, Louisiana.

It’s in that capacity that Robicheaux crosses paths with powerful mob boss, Tony Nemo. Tony has a Civil War sword he’d like to give to Levon Broussard, a popular local author whose books have been adapted into major Hollywood films. Then there’s Jimmy Nightingale, the young poster boy of New Orleans wealth and glamour. Jimmy’s fond of Levon’s work, and even fonder of his beautiful, enigmatic wife, Rowena. Tony thinks Jimmy can be a US Senator someday, and has the resources and clout to make it happen. There’s something off about the relationship among these three men, and after a vicious assault.  Complicating matters is the sudden death of the New Iberian local responsible for Molly’s death; namely that Robicheaux’s colleague thinks Robicheaux had something to do with it.
