Join us as we discuss Barrier Island by John D. MacDonald.
There are two kinds of men in Mississippi. They make natural enemies. And sometimes, but only if the balance between strength and weakness tips too far, unnatural allies. Tucker Loomis is a hard and dangerous man with a ruthlessness all West Bay fears and respects, and an improbably amount of money. Wade Rowley is a common man who aspires to honor but gets caught up in the footwork of a skilled swindler. In a pitiless game, with a few harsh rules and just one way of keeping score, the wrong man will die. And another will get away with more than murder.
Extra copies of the book will be available at the circulation desk.
The discussion will be held in the library's meeting room. Newcomers always welcome!

Spring cleaning? Don't throw out what you might get fixed!
Volunteer “fixers” will be available to try and repair broken items that you may have sitting around your house. These wonderful community volunteers are willing to share their indispensable practical skills to repair items and reduce waste and greenhouse gas emissions and raw materials needed for new items. In 2019, repair cafes worldwide saved about 463 tons of waste and prevented the emission of about 11,000 tons of carbon dioxide. It’s a great way to bring the community together to reduce waste, which makes our community more sustainable and saves on our disposal costs.
Items you may bring for repair include: bikes; clothing (simple mending, patching, hemming); computers; lamps (rewiring); small appliances (no microwaves); small furniture; and toys. We will also have knife, scissor and tool sharpening available. Please do not bring anything with an engine. Repairs are not guaranteed. Patrons will be responsible for disposing of unrepairable items. (The library will have information for proper disposal or recycling of these items.)
No registration is necessary, although there may some wait time.
So start saving your broken things for the Killingworth Library Repair Café, or just come for tea or coffee, meet your handy neighbors and browse our selection of repair and sustainability books!

One of America’s most distinguished political theorists examines what happens when national politics enters a small New England town - our town of Killingworth!
After the election of 2016 and, even more urgently, after the election of 2020, many citizens looked at the economic and cultural divisions that were causing deep disruptions in American politics and asked, “What is happening to us?” Paul W. Kahn explores these fundamental changes as they show themselves in a small New England town—his home of twenty-five years, Killingworth, Connecticut.
His inquiry grounds a democratic theory that puts volunteering, not voting, at its center. Absent active participation, citizens lose the capacity for judgment that comes from working with others to solve real problems. Volunteering, however, is under existential threat today. Changes in civil society, commerce, employment, and public opinion formation have isolated families from each other and from their communities. Even middle-class families live under financial stress, uncertain of their children’s future, and without the support of civil society. Local media has disappeared. Residents do not have the time, information, or interest to volunteer.
Under these conditions, national polarization enters local politics, which becomes yet another site for national conflict. To save our democracy, Kahn concludes, we need to find ways of matching opportunities for participation to the ways we live our lives today.

Join us as we read Magpie Murders by Anthony Horowitz.
Where: A quiet fishing village in northern Iceland, where no one locks their doors. It is accessible only via a small mountain tunnel.
Who: Ari Thor is a rookie policeman on his first posting, far from his girlfriend in Reykjavik. He has a past that he's unable to leave behind.
What: A young woman is found lying half-naked in the snow, bleeding and unconscious, and a highly esteemed elderly writer falls to his death. Ari is dragged straight into the heart of a community where he can trust no one, and secrets and lies are a way of life.
Past plays tag with the present and the claustrophobic tension mounts, while Ari is thrust ever deeper into his own darkness―blinded by snow and with a killer on the loose.
Extra copies will be available at the circulation desk.
The discussion will be held in the library's meeting room. Newcomers always welcome!

Craft with a Cricut cutting machine!
Project possibilities are endless: cards, decals, home decorations, three-dimensional figures... You'll be amazed at what this cutting machine can do!
Most of the crafts do not require a fee, unless we are working with specialized materials like wood or veneer. Those projects will have a $2.00 materials fee attached.
Ages 13 through adults are invited to join us. Two sessions will be held every Tuesday - please register for whichever day/time works best for you. Each class is limited to 2 attendees, so sign up soon!
