The show runs from September 1st - 30th. Meet the artist at a reception from 11am - 1pm on Saturday, September 9th.
Maureen DeSisto is an acrylic landscape painter whose themes include the New
England landscape and everyday life. She draws directly on the canvas with the
brush and also enjoys painting in black and white which strips down the scene to
raw shapes and images and shadows.
Maureen explores nostalgia such as carousels, antique cars, old mill buildings,
local landmarks, lighthouses, farms and women sweeping and washing dishes.
Maureen composes each scene in the camera lens and think about how it translates
to a canvas later on. She uses the camera as a tool and takes reference photos. A
subject has to mean something or represent something for her to want to paint it,
especially things that evoke deep feelings from the viewer and bring back
memories. She makes trips to Rockport, Newburyport and Gloucester and finds
inspiration in the local scenery and art galleries.
A life-long Methuen resident, she studied with Bill Swank of Salem NH and
attended Mass. College of Art in Boston earning a BFA in Illustration and AAS in
Commercial Art at Chamberlayne JR. College of Boston.
She is a Board member of the Greater Haverhill Art Association.
Two of her paintings of historic Methuen are in Methuen’s Enterprise Bank’s
permanent collection.
Her website is maureendesistoacrylicpainter.com

Birds of prey are also known as raptors, and they are hunting birds characterized by hooked beaks and powerful grabbing feet armed with sharp talons (the word raptor comes from a Latin word that means "to seize." Raptors can also boast the best eyesight and the sharpest hearing in the animal kingdom. Raptors include hawks, falcons and owls, and this presentation, which incorporates 5-6 live birds of prey, all native to New England, gives an overview of these different categories.
WINGMASTERS is a partnership of two people dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of North American birds of prey. Julie Anne Collier and Jim Parks are both licensed wildlife rehabilitators based in Massachusetts. Together they care for injured birds of prey at their center in Leverett, Massachusetts. Most of the birds they rehabilitate can ultimately be released back into the wild, but in some cases the birds are left permanently handicapped. Julie and Jim are further licensed to provide a home for these nonreleasable raptors, and to use them for educational programs. Since 1994 WINGMASTERS has presented over 10,000 programs at schools, libraries and museums throughout New England.
This program is for adults, teens, and children age 6 and up. Please register, space is limited.
This program is sponsored by a grant from the Pepperell Cultural Council, a local agency that is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.

Our book for October is Loot by Tania James. *Starred Review* James follows The Tusk That Did the Damage (2015) with a rich, sprawling, picaresque historical novel about the apprenticeship of Abbas, an Indian woodworker, to Lucien Du Leze, a dissipated French clockmaker tasked with creating an automaton for India's late eighteenth-century ruler, Tipu Sultan. From the tyrannical opulence of Tipu's palace to the fading glory of a British country manor, James weaves a lustrous tale of intrigue and survival, cunning and romance. Scott Matsumoto is an acoustic fingerstyle guitar player who combines the styles of Andy McKee and Tommy Emmanuel. The result is a broad range of guitar songs that are both percussive and melodic; everything from two-hand tapping guitar pieces to covers of pop songs. Scott started as a folk singer/songwriter, but decided to go “all in” on the guitar: making all the music come through the guitar. The guitar is his band-in-a-box. Every sound in the band gets created out of the different parts of the guitar; there are no pedals or electronics.
