Lynne Burmeister: Consapevalezza
From August 1st - 30th.

She never lost touch with her love for painting and works with different mediums and styles.  Lynne is an artist. wife, mother, and dog lover. Embracing her weirdness and love of nature.

Extraterrestrial -- The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth with Harvard's Avi Loeb

Bestselling author Avi Loeb will discuss his recent critically acclaimed book, "Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth," in this Zoom webinar.

TO REGISTER FOR THIS ZOOM, PLEASE CLICK HERE.

About The Book: Harvard’s top astronomer lays out his controversial theory that our solar system was recently visited by advanced alien technology from a distant star. In late 2017, scientists at a Hawaiian observatory glimpsed an object soaring through our inner solar system, moving so quickly that it could only have come from another star. Avi Loeb, Harvard’s top astronomer, showed it was not an asteroid; it was moving too fast along a strange orbit, and left no trail of gas or debris in its wake. There was only one conceivable explanation: the object was a piece of advanced technology created by a distant alien civilization.

In "Extraterrestrial," Loeb takes readers inside the thrilling story of the first interstellar visitor to be spotted in our solar system. He outlines his controversial theory and its profound implications: for science, for religion, and for the future of our species and our planet. A mind-bending journey through the furthest reaches of science, space-time, and the human imagination, "Extraterrestrial" challenges readers to aim for the stars—and to think critically about what’s out there, no matter how strange it seems.

About The Author: Avi Loeb is the Frank B. Baird, Jr., Professor of Science at Harvard University, chair of Harvard’s Department of Astronomy, founding director of Harvard’s Black Hole Initiative, and director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (ITC) within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. Author of four books and over 700 scientific papers, Loeb is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, the American Physical Society, and the International Academy of Astronautics. In 2012, Time selected Loeb as one of the twenty-five most influential people in space.

Presented in collaboration with the Tewksbury Public Library. Sponsored by the Corning Foundation and the Friends of the Lawrence Library.

North Sea Gas

On tour from Scotland...  “North Sea Gas” is one of Scotland’s most popular folk bands for over 40 years with great vocals and tremendous three part harmonies. Guitars, mandolin, fiddle, bouzouki, harmonica, whistles, bodhrans, banjo, and good humour are all part of the entertainment. They have received Gold and Silver Disc awards from the Scottish Music Industry Association and regularly have sold out shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and around the world!

They have released 22 albums with “Hearth & Homeland” being the most recent and are constantly adding new material to their shows. One of their previous albums, “The Fire and the Passion of Scotland, was “Album of the Year” at Celtic Radio in the U.S., winning first place in the “Jigs and Reels” category as well for the set of tunes on the album.  They recently released a three disc CD commemorating their 40th Anniversary, aptly titled, “A Long Road.”

Their show, and their albums, consist of traditional, contemporary and self-penned material put together, in a style all their own, along with their humor and story-telling. This proves popular during their regular tours of Scotland, America, Canada, Germany, Austria, Estonia, Turkey, and many other destinations both in and outside of their home in Scotland. Every year there are appearances on TV and Radio on both sides of the Atlantic including “Late Night Saturday,” “Woodsongs Old Time Radio Hour,” and “Song of the Mountains” shown on select PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) TV stations in the U.S. In the past, the band recorded for Chinese television with an estimated audience of 800 million,
played in Istanbul, Turkey for the British Consulate, and recently had the honor of performing at the famous Rosslyn Chapel.

In addition to regular tours at home and abroad, they have taken their show to theatres, arts centres, colleges, schools, libraries, and community halls around the world. Touring, and seeing their native Scotland and other parts of the world, is something the band really enjoys.

HERE’S WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING ABOUT “NORTH SEA GAS”…..

  • “The band displays an attachment and a reverence for their roots from the very start. The music feels genuine, unpretentious and spontaneous, with a fondness for storytelling and beautiful harmonies.” (Celtic Radio – Boston) http://www.celticradio.net
  • “No airs and graces just fantastic music”…EdinburghGuide.com (Edin/Festival)
  • “…..they inherit the mantle vacated by The Corries and The McCalmans with tight vocal harmonies and well-chosen material…..provide a solid well-honed sound vocally strong and musically complimentary…..most commendable about North Sea Gas is their ability to balance up tempo material with quieter more thoughtful moments and treat each with commitment and professionalism. “Fire in the Glen” is an excellent showcase for their talents and shows them taking the Scottish ballad group mantle with fire and grace.” John O’Regan Freelance Music Journalist, Broadcaster, Lecturer, Limrick, Ireland

Writing a “Legacy Letter”: Sharing Your Values with Loved Ones

A legacy letter (also called an “ethical will”) is a written document that allows you to share your life lessons, express your values and transmit your blessings to future generations. A legacy letter is not a formal legal document or a full-length memoir; it’s a brief personal statement, typically just a few pages. Writing one is a rewarding experience that creates an enduring gift for your family, friends and loved ones. This workshop is designed to introduce the concept of legacy letters and to help you craft your own legacy letter. It includes discussion and a few brief writing exercises. Jay will offer advice to help you complete your legacy letter, share it with loved ones and preserve it for future generations. Please register for this in-person afternoon program. Space is limited! Jay Sherwin has practiced law, given away money for five charitable foundations and served as a hospital chaplain. Drawing on all those experiences, Jay created the Life Reflections Project to educate people about legacy letters and ethical wills; he now teaches classes and workshops on legacy writing and helps people create their own legacy documents. You can read more on Jay’s website at www.jaysherwin.com.

Stephen Lewis Poster Show: Art for a Cause

Art for a Cause! ~ an International Poster Exhibit

The posters are from a collection of more than 9000 of Stephen Lewis. He is a long-time activist in the labor movement, and the former Treasurer of his union. Stephen has exhibited at large number of public libraries in Massachusetts and two of the state Heritage parks. He has presented at the annual conference of the National Council on Public History, and on some cable television programs. The posters/photos were contributed by friends, collected at conferences, visits to some of the organizations, and from connections made through the internet.

Organizations in many countries use posters to communicate ideas and messages to their audience. Posters are sometimes used as billboards and are pasted on walls, fences, and poles all over a city. Unions sometimes hang posters in workplaces to warn of dangers, educate about benefits or inspire actions. Posters sometimes use mainly the written word to communicate a message. Other times they rely on creative art to communicate the idea. It is an art form that is easily accessible to many people. The art goes to the people rather than the people having to go to a museum. It is a communication tool that is less frequently used by unions in the United States. As commercial advertising calls for more consumption, a political poster calls for more action.

Art can be a potent weapon is the service of a cause. An artist with a political consciousness can dedicate their artwork to causes they believe in. Their work reflects their beliefs. Some may do politically themed work because they were hired to express a
certain idea. Yet other artists with good political consciousness may do non-political artwork but add their name or money to various causes. The works in this exhibit do not include any work of artists in the last category. These posters were created to educate and
inspire people to various causes. The artists who created these posters reflect their respective cultures as well as their own creative consciousness. “I collect posters which reflect some of my ideals. They include trade unionism, peace, women’s equality, acceptance of diversity, protecting the nvironment, and anti-imperialism”. These posters are about other issues, states Stephen Lewis. Poster art is one of the most powerful means of communication and the examples in this exhibit speak eloquently of the battle for fair wages, decent conditions, and social justice.

This project is supported in part by a grant from the Pepperell Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency,This show runs from Oct 3 through October 29, 2022

Family Ties: Artwork by Charlotte Andry Gibbs and Rembs Layman

Charlotte Andry Gibbs began painting images of children when her sons were born. While a student at Massachusetts College of Art in the 1980s, a color course taught by Rob Moore, Jr. opened my eyes to nuanced color relationships, and the artwork I produced for the next ten years was mostly non-objective abstraction. By 1994, however, watching the Winter Olympics renewed my interest in figurative work and inspired me to bring what I had learned about shape, value, and hue to figure. This approach evolved to the genre paintings on display here at Lawrence Library. My pencil drawings tend towards the illustrational, satisfying my wish to tell a story.

Rembs Layman ( Charlotte's son) was born on Nantucket, Massachusetts, and raised in and around the Boston area where he attended Massachusetts College of Art in the late eighties for graphic design and illustration. He later stepped away from the visual arts and entered the culinary world where he completed a two-year Associate Degree in Culinary Science program at Newbury College in the early nineties. After spending the next twenty years honing his skills as a Chef, Rembs again shifted his full-time focus to stay-at-home dad and now lives with his wife and two children in Shirley, Massachusetts.

Rembs enjoys the freedom and tranquility that painting provides him while raising a family.
