Family Book Club- How To Train Your Dad

New families welcome!  If you looking for chapter books to read with your child or a fun family program then join us for our informal book club.

This is a family-led group, each month attendees will pick the book they want to read the next month.   Join us for January's pick,  Gary Paulsen's new book How To Train Your Dad.

Twelve-year-old Carl is fed up with his father's single-minded pursuit of an off-the-grid existence. His dad may be brilliant, but dumpster-diving for food, scouring through trash for salvageable junk, and wearing clothes fully sourced from garage sales is getting old. Increasingly worried about what schoolmates and a certain girl at his new school might think of his circumstances--and encouraged by his off-kilter best friend--Carl adopts the principles set forth in a randomly discovered puppy-training pamphlet to "retrain" his dad's mindset . . . a crackpot experiment that produces some very unintentional results.

This is a fierce and funny novel about family, green-living, and untangling some of the ties that bind from middle-grade master Gary Paulsen

PLEASE REGISTER

Astrology for Self-Improvement

Please register for this 90-minute interactive class via Zoom, in which you will get a ‘beginner’s breakdown’ of Astrology. We will focus on The Zodiac wheel and what each of the 12 signs represents, and how they reflect on one’s own personality. We will also explore birth charts - which are a ‘snapshot’ of the sky on the exact day you were born - and we will break down the 12 houses of astrology. This class is ideal for individuals ages 16 and up, who want to explore how we can use astrology in our everyday lives.

Courtney Cerasale is an intuitive astrologer, tarot card reader, and reiki practitioner. She has studied with some of the more well-known astrologers around the world, and is passionate about paying forward the joy and healing that astrology has brought into her own life. Her goal is to help direct this healing art away from its triviality in the mainstream, to bring a better understanding of the science of astrology to the world.

Frederick Law Olmsted, New England’s Beloved Son
Presented by Ann McEntee, PhD, MLA

Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture, designed our first city
parks, park systems, and model suburban communities. He promoted environmentalism
and the subsequent creation of the national park system. Greatly influenced by his New
England upbringing, Olmsted instilled in us a love of our American landscapes.

This talk begins with a brief overview of Olmsted’s early life here in New England and
his numerous jobs before partnering with the architect Calvert Vaux to design Central
Park. These various jobs were significant in that each of them taught him skills that
served him well in his work as a landscape architect.

The talk then turns to two of his New England works, the Emerald Necklace and Shelburne Farms, which display his
fundamental design principles and techniques. Boston’s Park System reveals Olmsted’s
sensitivity to the growing city and the need to “green” it through parkland and parkways.
Shelburne Farms, one of his two contributions to the Country Place/Estate Era,
presents additional design strategies while underscoring his fundamental design
principle, “look to the genius of the place.” Through both works we can understand how
the majestic scenery of New England shaped and then directed his work as a designer
of great landscapes.

The talk is intended for a general audience but pays particular attention to the interests
of gardeners and those interested in exploring these Olmsted sites with family and
friends.

Please register to receive a Zoom link. Thank you!

Whether meditation is something you've been curious about, or a staple in your self-care routine, we would love for you to join us on Tuesday evenings for some midweek tranquility and renewal, lead by Anita McHugh. There are a limited number of spaces here at the library, or you can join us on Facebook Live from home. A personal Facebook account is NOT required in order to attend this event via the Lawrence Library's Facebook page. Attendees will not appear on camera.

To attend this session in person, please register here for one of the limited (socially distant) spots at the library. You are encouraged to arrive at 6:15 to meet the presenter, get properly situated, and ask any questions you may have.

If you choose to attend the meditation online, simply visit the Lawrence Library Facebook page. We will begin the livestream a few minutes before 6:30 pm. .
