Join the Manchester City Library and the New Hampshire Audubon for a program series on Peregrine Falcons! This All-Ages program is ideal for anyone interested in falcons, and Manchester’s own nesting pair. Join via Zoom on Tuesdays from 7:00-8:00 PM, March 1 & 15, April 19, May 17, and June 21!
This five-part virtual series is designed to engage, excite, and invite audience members into the diverse and fascinating world of Peregrine Falcons. Each hour-long presentation will cover a range of topics from raptor biology and general birding tips to courtship displays, chick development, banding, fledging, and more!
Presentations will be monthly beginning in March and running through June. With cameras livestreaming a nesting site in Manchester, program participants can independently monitor a pair of Peregrines from dusk to dawn throughout the duration of the program!
Peregrine Falcons across North America were decimated by DDT, an environmental contaminant that impacted egg hatchability, beginning in the 1940s. By the 1970s these raptors were rarely seen and no longer breeding in New England and were placed on state and federal endangered species lists. Recovery programs in NH began in the mid-1970s. Since the mid-1980s NH Audubon has coordinated NH restoration efforts and participated in regional falcon conservation initiatives. Through active monitoring and management, NH Audubon has played a pivotal role in increasing the Peregrine Falcon population in the state from one breeding pair in 1981 to 25 pairs in 2018. This project includes further monitoring and management to ensure the population’s full recovery in New Hampshire.
Hatching, Hunting & Chick Development
This webinar discusses the rapid stages of development expected to occur in the short six-weeks between hatching and fledging and the demands placed on each breeding pair by their ravenous offspring. Hunting techniques, food webs, and raptor digestion will be covered before we wrap up with the dissection of an owl pellet.
Attendees wishing to follow along are invited to pick up individual pellets free of charge thanks to a generous grant provided by the Dorr Foundation!
Pellets and accompanying diagrams will be available at the Manchester City Library, the Concord Public Library, or the Massabesic Audubon Center in Auburn starting on May 3rd. While pellets are free, they are limited to one per household.
Follow along as we monitor the Manchester Peregrine Falcon pair at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY_qbNgZF3E

Group meeting
Should we humanize the world's more inhumane leaders? Who was Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, and others before they became the cruel dictators who wrote their names in blood on the pages of history? Join the Manchester City Library on Thursday, May 19th, at 6:30pm in the library's auditorium or via Zoom to hear local Author Brandon Gauthier discuss his first book Before Evil: Young Lenin, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Mao, and Kim.
Gauthier's first novel analyzes the early lives of the aforementioned dictators through stories about family, education, rebellion, and tragedy. In doing so, it challenges the common assuption that early trauma most influenced their lives. Positive trends in these despots' youths, he argues, made possible their later rise to power. Each dictator had a least one good, loving parent who valued their education from an early age and enabled them to think about the world through the lenses of ideas. Brandon K. Gauthier completed his doctorate in Modern History a Fordham University in New York City in 2016. He is the Director of Global Education a The Derryfield School and an Adjunct Professor of History for Fordham University.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID, we ask that all in-person attendees wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status, and maintain a distance of 6 feet from other attendees. In-person attendance is limited to 50, so please sign up to ensure your seat! To attend virtually, sign up for the zoom link and email reminder! For questions, call Tess Kimsey at 603-624-6550 ext. 7620 or email tkimsey@manchesternh.gov

Join the Manchester City Library for a viewing of Waking Up French! Réveil: The Repression and Renaissance of the French in New England, followed by a community discussion at 6pm in the Library’s Auditorium.
Learn about the French heritage, immigration history and cultural renewal of New England Franco-Americans. Discover the “universal message to Revéil that applies to both older immigrant groups that suffer the loss of heritage culture and newer groups struggling to preserve their culture as they become new Americans.” This documentary challenges viewers to consider: What is the importance of cultural heritage? Does the loss of language mean a loss of culture?
Waking Up French… website: “The film traces the French heritage beginning with immigration from the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Acadia through persecution by Ku Klux Klan and language loss, to cultural renaissance and heritage preservation.” https://www.wakingupfrench.com.
About the Director: “Ben Levine’s award-winning work expands uses of documentary video from storytelling to engaging both the film and the filmmaking process to motivate social change, address injustice and trauma stories, and revive endangered languages.” Mr. Levine is also the director of Speaking Place, which works to revive native languages and empower social change in communities.
Banding, Fledging, Flying
This final program recaps the banding procedure of the resident falcon chicks while discussing the integral role longitudinal wildlife monitoring plays in research and conservation. From butterflies to bald eagles, metal bands and digital tags allow us to track populations and recognize patterns over the lifespan of various bird species.
This webinar will conclude with ample time for questions and discussion and will present opportunities for interested folks to get involved in the amazing world of citizen science!
Materials to accompany this webinar can be found at the Concord Public Library, the Manchester City Library, and the NH Audubon’s Massabesic Center.

In the Heart of the Sea (131 min) 2015 Rated PG13 Directed by Ron Howard.
Starring: Chris Hemsworth, Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson, Ben Whishaw, Michelle Fiarley, and Tom Holland
In the winter of 1820, the New England whaling ship Essex was assaulted by something no one could believe: a whale of mammoth size and will, and an almost human sense of vengeance. The real-life maritime disaster would inspire Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. But that told only half the story. This story reveals the encounter's harrowing aftermath, as the ship's surviving crew is pushed to their limits and forced to do the unthinkable to stay alive.

Popular songs are a wonderful window for looking into social movements of America's past, as shown by singer/actress Deborah Anne Goss in her program Abby Hutchinson’s Sweet Freedom Songs. Join the Manchester City Library on Thursday, June 23, at 7:00 PM for a virtual performance!
Presented as part of New Hampshire's “Humanities-To-Go” programming, Deborah performs as New Hampshire-born abolitionist, suffragist, and singer Abby Hutchinson, who became famous singing anti-slavery songs with her brothers as ‘The Hutchinson Family Singers’ during the 1840's. There is a direct connection between the abolition movement and the campaign for woman suffrage, as the stories and songs in this lively program illustrate. There may be opportunities for audience participation, and words for some of the song choruses are provided.
A native of Vermont, Deborah has lived, sung, acted, and taught in the Boston area for many years. Since 2002 she's developed and performed solo programs of American history in word and song. As one-half of the now-retired singing duo ‘The Proper Ladies’, she and Anabel Graetz performed their programs of Victorian Era popular songs throughout New England and on both coasts from 1994 to 2020. Deb also sings with New Hampshire performers Steve Blunt and Marek Bennett as ‘The Hutchinson Heritage Singers’.

Master and Commander (139 Min) 2003 Directed by Peter Weir
Starring: Russell Crowe, Paul Bettany, Billy Boyd, and James D'Arcy.
During the Napoleonic Wars, a British frigate, the HMS Surprise, and the larger French warship, Acheron, stalk each other off of the coast of South America. Luck Jack, as he is referred to by his crew, is well regarded by his men, who trust him implicitly, even after the first devastating battle and an apparent personal vendetta against the French captain. The ship's surgeon balances the violence of his chosen life with the quiet demeanor of the scientist. He is the captain's friend and confidant, the two frequently playing violin and cello duets together.

Captain Phillips. 135 minutes, 2013, Directed by Paul Greengrass.
Starring: Tom Hanks, Catherine Keener, Barkhad Abdi.
Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is - through director Paul Greengrass's distinctive lens - simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips' unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.
For more information, contact Tess Kimsey at 603-624-6550 ext. 7620 or email tkimsey@manchesernh.gov.

The Manchester City Library invites you to an informative presentation on Gardening for Wildlife. This presentation will be on Tuesday, July 19th at 6pm Eastern and will be presented both in person and online.
A Garden for Wildlife is a slide presentation that shows how anyone with a backyard, garden, or landscaped area can help wildlife by altering their landscaping and gardening practices. Includes discussion of wildlife and habitats, plant choice, use of native plants, nest boxes and feeders, and issues such as invasive plants.
This program will be presented by Ruth Axelrod. Ruth is a member of the speakers’ panel for the Speaking for Wildlife program, which educates people about the needs of local wildlife and what they can do to help maintain their habitats. Ruth joined the North American Master Gardener program in 2010 and is now an Advanced Master Gardener volunteer. She was trained in New Hampshire and Maryland, where she also completed extensive advanced training in eco-friendly gardening, composting and storm water management (including designing and constructing rain gardens). Her passion is helping people learn to recognize the ecological impacts of their landscaping and gardening practices and to be able to make choices that positively impact their local ecosystems.
For questions, call Caitlin at 603-624-6550 x3320 or email cdionne@manchesternh.gov.

Discussion Topic: Who was the person who influenced you the most?
Our lives are made up of stories. The Remembering Together program offers seniors a unique opportunity to share with one another some of their memorable life stories. These stories are often a source of encouragement, mutual appreciation, perspective, and a sense of connection. Of course, there are also times when a story gives everyone a good laugh.
Please join The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester and the Manchester City Library for a conversational group at the Senior Center on Mondays at 1:30pm, June 13 & 27, July 11 & 25, August 1 & 15. Virtual attendance is also available!
For questions, call Susan Harmon at 603-624-6550 x3320 or email sharmon@manchesternh.gov
Signup for this program is encouraged! We will send you a reminder email before the meeting as well as a zoom link if you wish to attend virtually.
