The Perfect Storm.130 minutes, 2000, Directed by Wolfgang Petersen.
Starring: George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, John C. Reilly, Allen Payne, and Diane Lane.
Billy Tyne is a sword-fishing-boat captain out of Gloucester, highly competitive and stung by a string of poor outings. His crew is hardly back in port when he tells them he's going out again, even though it's October and the weather can turn ugly. Five join him: the young Bobby, newly in love; Murph, a devoted father recently divorced; Sully, a guy Murph despises; Bugsy, who's finally met a woman who likes him; and Alfred, a quiet Jamaican. They catch little, so they sail east, with Tyne ignoring storm warnings behind him. Finally, the fish bite, but the ice machine fails. Should they head home through the storm of the century, or wait it out and lose their catch?
For more information, contact Tess Kimsey at 603-624-6550 ext. 7620 or email tkimsey@manchesernh.gov.

What happens when you lose a pet? Join the Manchester City Library, in partnership with the Tewksbury Public Library for an evening author event on August 17 at 7:00 PM. Author E.B. Bartels will discuss her new book, Good Grief: On Loving Pets, Here and Hereafter, in this Zoom webinar.
About The Book: Good Grief: On Loving Pets, Here and Hereafter is an unexpected, poignant, and personal account of loving and losing pets, exploring the singular bonds we have with our companion animals, and how to grieve them once they’ve passed. E.B. Bartels has had a lot of pets—dogs, birds, fish, tortoises. As varied a bunch as they are, they’ve taught her one universal truth: to own a pet is to love a pet, and to own a pet is also—with rare exception—to lose that pet in time. But while we have codified traditions to mark the passing of our fellow humans, most cultures don’t have the same for pets. Bartels takes us from Massachusetts to Japan, from ancient Egypt to the modern era, in search of the good pet death. We meet veterinarians, archaeologists, ministers, and more, offering an idiosyncratic, inspiring array of rituals—from the traditional (scattering ashes, commissioning a portrait), to the grand (funereal processions, mausoleums), to the unexpected (taxidermy, cloning). The central lesson: there is no best practice when it comes to mourning your pet, except to care for them in death as you did in life, and find the space to participate in their end as fully as you can. Punctuated by wry, bighearted accounts of Bartels’s own pets and their deaths, Good Grief is a cathartic companion through loving and losing our animal family.
About The Author: The nonfiction work of E.B. Bartels has appeared in Catapult, Electric Literature, The Believer Logger, The Rumpus, The Millions, The Toast, The Butter, Entropy, FullStop, Ploughshares online, and the anthology The Places We’ve Been: Field Reports from Travelers Under 35, among others. She is a regular performer in Mortified, and her flash nonfiction piece “Vulnerable” was the winner of the 2018 Eldridge Tide & Pilot Book Story Contest. E.B. also writes the monthly column "Non-Fiction by Non-Men for Fiction Advocate," in which she interviews women and non-binary people who write nonfiction. She is an instructor at the creative writing center GrubStreet, the Wellesley Writes It editor for Wellesley Underground, and an on-again-off-again bookseller at Newtonville Books. In addition to writing, E.B. also works as a freelance editor, a manuscript consultant, a writing coach, a tutor, and a senior editorial writer in the communications and public affairs department at Wellesley College. She lives in Massachusetts with her husband, Richie, and their many, many pets: Terrence (tortoise), Seymour (dog), Bert, Dan, and Murray (pigeons), and assorted fish and shrimp. The Manchester City Library along with the Tewksbury Public Library will present The Energy Crisis in the 1970’s on August 23rd from 2:00pm to 3:00pm via Zoom.
Have you heard the phrase: “not since the ‘70s” lately? On February 2, 1977, less than two weeks after assuming the Presidency, Jimmy Carter addressed the nation in a televised “fireside chat” to speak to Americans about the looming Energy Crisis. What tools and resources does the Constitution provide the Executive branch to take on such a crisis? What role do the other branches of government play? This program will examine the 39th President’s response to this crisis through the lens of primary sources of the Carter Library and National Archives.
Led by Joshua Montanari, Education Specialist and Volunteer Docent Coordinator at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library.
For questions, call Amy Hanmer at 603-624-6550 x7620 or email ahanmer@manchesternh.gov

Join the Manchester City Library on Tuesday September 6 at 6:30pm in the library auditorium or via Zoom to hear local author Kenneth Sheldon talk about his newest book Deep Water: Murder, Scandal, and Intrigue in a New England Town.
Full of mystery and intrigue, Deep Water is the true story of the murder of William K. Dean, which scandalized the entire region and split the town of Jaffrey, NH, for decades. In the waning days of World War I, William K. Dean was brutally murdered, his body hog-tied and dumped in a rainwater cistern on his farm in the quiet town of Jaffrey. Suspicion quickly fell on Dean's wife, an invalid in the early stages of dementia. Her friends, outraged at the accusations, pointed instead to a former tenant of Dean’s, whom many suspected of being a German spy. Others believed that Dean's best friend, a politically powerful banker and judge, was involved. To bring this mystery to page, Sheldon extensively researched the Dean murder and looked into thousands of pages of FBI documents, Grand Jury testimonies, newspaper accounts, private correspondence, and the archives of the Jaffrey Historical Society.
Kenneth Sheldon is a freelance author, editor, and playwright. His work has appeared in publications ranging from Acoustic Guitar to Yankee Magazine, where he was formerly a columnist. He has written or contributed to books published by Yankee, Time-Life, Rodale, and others, and was formerly the West Coast Bureau Chief for Byte Magazine.

group is reading "Talking to Strangers: What we Should Know About the People we Don't Know" by Malcom Gladwell - Talking to Strangers is a classically Gladwellian intellectual adventure, a challenging and controversial excursion through history, psychology, and scandals taken from the news. Something is very wrong, Gladwell argues, with the tools and strategies we use to make sense of people we don't know. And because we don't know how to talk to strangers, we are inviting conflict and misunderstanding in ways that have a profound effect on our lives and our world. For more information, please call 603-624-6550 ext. 7619. You can join us in the Winchell Room or via zoom. Registration is required.
