Adult DIY: Big Dipper Spirit Bear Ornament

Star light, star bright,
First star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have this wish I wish tonight.
Let this ornament grace my home tonight.

For December’s adult take & make craft we will be looking upwards to the North Star and the Big Dipper for inspiration. The Big and the Little Dipper constellations are very familiar starry companions to us all. And as winter stars shine brilliantly in the night sky, they are most welcome friends during the long dark nights. Bring a bit of that starlight and magic into your home this winter by making these Big Dipper felt ornaments.

These kits come with the materials needed to make one bear. These kits will be available on Tuesday, December 13th at the Information Desk in the library rotunda while supplies last. For more information please contact Yvonne L. at yloomis@manchesternh.gov or at 603-624-6550 ext. 7619. P.S. A  very special thanks goes to Goffstown Library for sharing their creativity with us.

I wish you all happy crafting!

Best Bike Rides in New England

In conjunction with the Tewksbury Public Library, join us for a virtual presentation by author David Sobel on his new book, Best Bike Rides in New England. Sobel will reveal some of his favorite rides, discuss the variables he uses when designing a ride, explain how to design rides using online tools like "Map My Ride" or "Strava," advocate for incorporating bike riding 3-5 times a week into your personal wellness goals, and suggest a great ride in or around your community.

About The Book: The Northeast provides some of the most exciting cycling in the United States: sweeping vistas, seaside towns, fall colors, and more. With this comprehensive guide, New Hampshire local David Sobel offers up rides in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. No matter the state, there’s a ride here for everyone, with a range of mileage and difficulty level so both beginner and experienced cyclists can enjoy. Take in the scenery and stop for surf and turf on a moderate 17-mile trip through Mystic, Connecticut. Challenge yourself on hilly vistas and cool off in Cold River while biking Walpole, New Hampshire. Or take it easy while travelling back in time through Concord, Massachusetts. In addition to detailed directions, each route features annotated maps, charming photography, elevation profiles, and suggestions for entertainment and dining along the way. This is a must-have guide to discovering New England’s hidden gems on two wheels.

Tangled Lives: Native People and English Settlers in Colonial New England

The Manchester City Library invites you to a live performance of Tangled Lives by Jo Radner on Wednesday, January 4th at 6:30pm. This event will be held in the auditorium.

Tangled Lives blends and juxtaposes material from Abenaki and English tradition, tracing some of the intertwined threads in the relationships between English settlers and Native peoples as they struggled to control the Abenaki land of northern New England – land to which each group felt entitled, land on which different cultures clashed, mingled, and merged.  Exploring questions of responsibility and justice, the stories reveal the way English and Native people in this region saw one another as defenders and trespassers, pursuers and refugees, relatives and aliens, kind neighbors and ruthless destroyers.

Radner presents stories from extensive research and from the written memoirs of two families who arrived in Massachusetts in 1635 and migrated over time to settle the new English towns of Ipswich and Haverhill, Massachusetts, Penacook (Concord), New Hampshire, and finally Pequawket (Fryeburg), Maine. Because the stories relate to her own ancestors, Radner’s quest to understand colonial lives invites all listeners to consider how they and their relatives and neighbors are part of the history of northern New England.

Jo Radner received her Ph.D. from Harvard University. Before returning to her family home in western Maine as a freelance storyteller, writer, and oral historian, she spent 31 years as professor at American University in Washington, DC, teaching literature, folklore, women’s studies, American studies, Celtic studies, and storytelling. She has published books and articles in all those fields. Her new book, Wit and Wisdom: The Forgotten Literary Life of New England Villages, will be published by the University of Massachusetts Press in 2023. She is past president of the American Folklore Society and the National Storytelling Network.

Adult DIY: Vision Boards

Manifest your goals for 2023 with a vision board! One helpful way to achieve your New Year goals is to create a visual representation of your goals. Vision boards include helpful images and text that represent something you’re trying to accomplish. These helpful tools can motivate, focus, and serve as a reminder that you need to put in the work to make your goals happen! Stop by the library to pick up a kit with everything you need to start your vision board!

These motivating kits will be available starting January 10, 2023. These kits are for adults only and are available while supplies last. For more information, call Sue Harmon at 603-624-6550 x 7620 or email sharmon@manchesternh.gov.

Secret Stories Behind the World's Most Iconic Paintings - Part 2

Join the Manchester City Library on January 19, from 7-8 pm via Zoom for the highly-requested Part 2 of Jane Oneail’s Secret Stories program! If you missed part 1, you can watch the recording.

From American Gothic to Whistler’s Mother to Nighthawks, there are some images that are so ubiquitous in our culture that we have stopped looking at them closely. This program delves into these iconic works and shares the secret stories behind their creation and reception.

Jane Oneail curates and delivers art appreciation programs to audiences throughout New England and beyond. Jane holds a master’s in Art History from Boston University and a master’s in Education from Harvard University. A New Hampshire native, she has worked at some of the state's most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator. Jane has also taught at the college level for more than a decade, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University. For more information, visit iamculturallycurious.com.

The History of America’s Kitchens from the Colonial Period to the Present

The Manchester City Library, in partnership with the Rockport Library, invites you to a program about the history of the kitchen! This program will be held via Zoom on Monday, February 6 at 7pm. Come sink your teeth into a fascinating history of the heart of the house!
From the colonial period to the present, the kitchen has been a source of nourishment and comfort. The way Americans have lived with their kitchens has changed dramatically over the course of three centuries. Historic New England curator Nancy Carlisle will discuss how the American kitchen has evolved from the seventeenth-century to the present. Drawing on her book America’s Kitchens, co-authored with Melinda Narardinov, Ms. Carlisle will discuss the technological and social changes that have taken place in this room and suggest how these innovations have transformed kitchen work and changed women’s lives.

Nancy Carlisle is senior curator of collections for Historic New England. She has worked in museums for more than twenty years and received her master’s degree in early American culture from the Winterthur Museum and University of Delaware.

Adult DIY: Cookie Cutter Birdfeeder Treats

Adult Take & Make Craft for February 2023!

I have always enjoyed bird watching and feeding the wild birds in my yard. It’s a hobby that I was fortunate enough to share with my grandmother. Many an afternoon she’d call me and tell me that her cardinal was back. I didn’t have a visiting bright red cardinal so it was fun to share that with her.

Did you know that February is National Bird Feeding Month? This is a chance for bird feeding, bird watching, and for anyone who is feeling in the spirit to extend a helping hand (or wing) to our flying friends. So spread your wings this February! Take part in National Bird Feeding Month with us because this month we’re making cookie cutter birdfeeder treats for our feathered friends.

These adult take & make craft kits come with what you will need to make a cute hanging birdfeeder treat for them. These birdseed ornaments are very easy to make and they look gorgeous on the trees outside! These kits will be available on Tuesday, February 14th in the Library Rotunda. Take a kit home and make this craft with your sweetheart. For more information please contact Yvonne L. at 603-624-6550 ext. 7619 or e-mail yloomis@manchesternh.gov

Happy crafting!

Thursday Evening Book Club - Vanderbilt: the Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty

Group is reading "Vanderbilt: the Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty" by Anderson, Cooper.  When sleven-year-old Cornelius Vanderbilt began to work on his father's small boat ferrying supplies in New York Harbor at the beginning of the nineteeth century, no one could have imagined that one day he would, through ruthlessness, cunning, and a pathological desire for money, build two empires - one in shipping and another in railroads - that would make him the richest man in America.  By 2018, whe the last Vanderbilt was forced out of The Breakers - the seventy-room summer estate in Newport, Rhode Island - the family would have been unrecognizable to the tycoon who started it all.  Now, the Commodore's great-great-great-grandson Anderson Cooper joins with historian Katherine Howe to explore the story of his legendary family and their outsized influence.  You can join us in person or via zoom.  Registration is required.  Call the information desk at 603-624-6550 ext. 7619 to register, or to reserve a print copy.
