Bald Eagles across the continental U.S. were decimated by DDT, an environmental contaminant that impacted egg hatchability beginning in the 1940s. By the 1960’s, these raptors were greatly diminished and rarely seen, and only around 400 pairs were known to breed in the entire Lower 48 states. Bald Eagles were among the first animals placed on federal and state Endangered Species lists in the 1970’s. Even after being taken off the NH Endangered and Threatened List in March 2017, threats to the health of the eagle population remain, and continued monitoring and management helps to ensure the population’s ongoing recovery in the Granite State.
Starting in January, and running monthly through May, you are invited to learn about these iconic raptors and follow real-time Bald Eagle development via public YouTube channels that broadcast various nest sites across the country. Learn about the history of the Bald Eagle’s endangerment and the challenges that they face, their life-cycle, and what you can do to aid in the species’ continued recovery. For questions, call Susan Harmon at 603-624-6550 x7620 or email sharmon@manchesternh.gov.
Courtship & Construction
Bird nests are as unique to a species as their plumage, with nesting materials ranging from grasses and twigs to spit, mud, and even metal wire. Some species construct their nests together, while others spend significant energy independently creating a nest in an effort to attract a mate. Let’s explore some truly astounding avian architects before examining the construction and maintenance behind the Bald Eagle’s impressive egg abode and their deep commitment to the territory where they choose to place it. If you think the housing market is tough in NH, wait until you see what real estate is like from a Bald Eagle’s perspective!

On April 4th from 6pm to 7:30pm in the Manchester City Library will be hosting a “unique and beautifully illustrated presentation” on the famous Imperial Faberge Easter Eggs in the auditorium, presented by Marina Forbes. This program is sponsored by the New Hampshire Humanities.
This unique and beautifully illustrated presentation will focus on the life and remarkable work of master jeweler and artist, Peter Carl Fabergé. The program will feature a spectacular photo-tour of Fabergé collections at the world famous museums and private collectors around the world. Emphasis is on the important role of egg painting in Slavic culture and on the unique development of this major art form from a traditional craft to the level of exquisite fine art under the patronage of the tsars. The fascinating history of these eggs and their role in the dramatic events of the last decades of Romanov rule in Russia and in the years following the Bolshevik Revolution will also be discussed.
Marina’s presentations have been described as “sometimes a little bit funny, sometimes a little bit serious, but always unmistakably Russian.” Her in-depth knowledge and passion for the subject is evident in her lectures and questions from the audience are highly encouraged. In addition to being an art historian and giving lectures on the “traditional arts, history and the rich tapestry of Russian culture” she is also an award winning artist with twenty years of experience in her field.

The Manchester City Library invites you to an informative session on building your family tree. This program is to be held on Tuesday, April 11 at 6:30pm via Zoom. Join us to learn how to better understand this part of genealogy!
This program will teach you how to build and better understand your family tree. We will discuss the differences of pedigree and family group trees, as well as how to gather accurate information, and how to understand and analyze relationships. We will also cover ways to share and publish family trees.
Eric Migdal is a 10 year resident of Pompton Lakes NJ. He has been doing family history research for over 28 years, assisting clients with family tree building, DNA test analysis, and safely and effectively contacting unknown family members. Genealogical research is personal to Migdal. As an adoptee, he spent many years searching for his biological family with very few results. His starting information was wrong and the assumptions made were also incorrect. He was able to use DNA testing to assist with finding the truth about his family and it ultimately lead to the correct family.
For questions, call Caitlin at 603-624-6550 x7620 or email cdionne@manchesternh.gov

Join the Manchester City Library on April 17, 2023, from 7-8 pm via Zoom for the first installment of our Culturally Curious Art Series! This wildly popular art series, presented by Jane Oneail, is back for the second year with a fantastic array of topics including popular artists and local art.
Marc Chagall’s colorful, abstracted paintings integrate a variety of elements from the modernist movements of the early twentieth century. His work is singular among his peers for its incorporation of Jewish themes, reflecting the artist’s cultural roots. This program provides an introduction to Chagall’s personal and professional resilience, his work and favorite subjects.
Jane Oneail curates and delivers art appreciation programs to audiences throughout New England and beyond. Jane holds a master’s in Art History from Boston University and a master’s in Education from Harvard University. A New Hampshire native, she has worked at some of the state's most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator. Jane has also taught at the college level for more than a decade, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University. For more information, visit iamculturallycurious.com.

Developmental Stages
As April’s lengthening days offer extended time to hunt and feed, the rapid development of eaglets becomes more easily observable. This webinar discusses the successional stages of development expected to occur in the 11-12 weeks between hatching and fledging and the demands placed on the parent eagles by their increasingly ravenous offspring. Hunting techniques, food webs, and challenges faced by both parents and offspring will be covered.

Contamination & Continued Diligence
This final program dovetails back to our pilot webinar as we return to the topic of ecosystem contamination and how it persists today. While there are readily available alternatives, lead (Pb) is still used in hunting ammunition and in fishing tackle. This creates significant ongoing threats to wildlife, both from current use and the legacy of old ammo and fishing tackle left in lakes, streams, and forests. We will conclude by presenting the various steps we can collectively take to ensure the continued success of our Bald Eagle population.
