Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner & Abstract Expressionism

Join the Manchester City Library on September 21, 2023, from 7-8 pm via Zoom for the sixth and last installment of our Culturally Curious Art Series! This wildly popular art series, presented by Jane Oneail, is back for the second year with a fantastic array of topics including popular artists and local art.

Jackson Pollock is the famous originator of the drip and splatter paintings that came to epitomize Abstract Expressionism at the middle of the twentieth century. Pollock served as the de facto leader of the movement, a masculine cowboy representing “action painting.” Only in recent years has the art world turned its attention to the contributions of women artists working at the same time, including Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock’s wife. This program explores the relationships of the artists, their work, and the enduring legacy in this revolutionary movement.

Jane Oneail curates and delivers art appreciation programs to audiences throughout New England and beyond. Jane holds a master’s in Art History from Boston University and a master’s in Education from Harvard University. A New Hampshire native, she has worked at some of the state's most esteemed cultural institutions, including the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen, where she served as Executive Director, and the Currier Museum of Art, where she held the role of Senior Educator. Jane has also taught at the college level for more than a decade, most recently at Southern New Hampshire University. For more information, visit iamculturallycurious.com.

Author Talk:The Original Bucky Lew: Basketball's First Black Professional

Join author Chris Boucher for a look back at the world of professional basketball circa 1902. On Tuesday, September 26, at 6:30 pm in the Auditorium.

Bucky Lew became basketball's first Black professional when he stepped onto the court in 1902. In a career that spanned roughly 25 years, he was also the first Black coach, manager, referee, and even team owner in otherwise white leagues. Manchester and the Franco-American community played important roles in Lew’s career.

Manchester's Harry Hough, the top scorer in the game at 16 per, learned of Lew's talents when he was held to a single basket the first time they met. Lew vs. Hough would become the league's marquee matchup, which culminated in its final championship series.

The Franco-American community gave Lew a huge assist both during his career and in cementing his legacy years later. He started his pro career with a Franco-American club, and when the Dodgers placed the first Black players in baseball in the French-Canadian dominated cities of Nashua, NH, and Montreal, they did so because they had inside information that the community would embrace them.

Chris Boucher lives north of Boston with his wife and near his sons and grandson. He is passionate about basketball, learning, and writing. While his hoops skills remain on the amateur side, he has put in the work to earn masters’ degrees in education and creative writing to improve there. You can find him online at chrisboucher.net!

In the Haunted Present: Jews in a Non-Jewish World, featuring Dara Horn

The Manchester City Library invites you to an informative lecture on Jewish lives in today’s world. Join us on Tuesday, October 3 at 5:30pm for a streamed viewing of the 2023 Holocaust Memorial Lecture: “In the Haunted Present: Jews in a Non-Jewish World” featuring author Dara Horn. This lecture is brought to you by the Cohen Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Keene State College in recognition of their 40th anniversary. Registration is required for virtual attendance.

In her latest book, People Love Dead Jews, acclaimed author Dara Horn explores a pointed question: Why do far too many people seem to love dead Jews, but ignore the living ones? In 2023, the Holocaust continues to make headlines, fill our films and fiction, and generate extraordinary interest far beyond our community. Yet ignorance and indifference towards Jew-hatred today seems to be higher than ever. What's going on?

Dara Horn is the award-winning author of six books and a regular columnist for Tablet. Horn received her doctorate in Yiddish and Hebrew literature from Harvard University. She has taught courses in these subjects at Sarah Lawrence College and Yeshiva University, and has held the Gerald Weinstock Visiting Professorship in Jewish Studies at Harvard. She has lectured for audiences in hundreds of venues throughout North America, Israel and Australia. She lives in New Jersey with her husband and four children.

For questions, call Caitlin or Sue at 603-624-6550 x7620 or email cdionne@manchesternh.gov or sharmon@manchesternh.gov

What’s Up in Tonight’s Sky and Sky Watch

The Manchester City Library invites you to a stellar sky watching program with the New Hampshire Astronomical Society! Join us on Tuesday, October 10th at 6:30pm in the Auditorium for a discussion on what we will be viewing in tonight’s sky. The presentation will be followed with a sky watch at Bishop Field in Merrimack.

What’s Up in Tonight’s Sky and Sky Watch is a part of a larger offering of programs connected to the Big Read. NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, to collectively read The Bear by Andrew Krivak. The Bear is a story about a father and daughter surviving in a post-apocalyptic future. The Sky Watch connects with the themes and setting of the book, navigating the vast wilderness.

The New Hampshire Astronomical Society is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to furthering public awareness of Astronomy. They accomplish this through public observing sessions, demonstrations and discussions. Regular monthly events include a “Skywatch” at the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery center in Concord and club meetings.

For questions, call Caitlin at 603-624-6550 x7620 or email cdionne@manchesternh.gov

Big Read Book Discussion: The Bear, by Andrew Krivak

As part of the NEA Big Read, The Manchester City Library will host NH Humanities Scholar Damian Costello, who will lead a book discussion of The Bear by Andrew Krivak on Thursday, October 26th at 6:30 p.m. in the library Winchell Room.

In an Edenic future, a girl and her father live close to the land in the shadow of a lone mountain. They possess a few remnants of civilization: some books, a pane of glass, a set of flint and steel, a comb. The father teaches the girl how to fish and hunt, the secrets of the seasons and the stars. He is preparing her for an adulthood in harmony with nature, for they are the last of humankind. But when the girl finds herself alone in an unknown landscape, it is a bear that will lead her back home through a vast wilderness that offers the greatest lessons of all, if she can only learn to listen.

A cautionary tale of human fragility, of love and loss, The Bear is a stunning tribute to the beauty of nature’s dominion and explores powerful themes about the importance of intergenerational storytelling, our complicated relationship with the environment, and how to prepare for an unknown future.

NEA Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. For more information, visit arts.gov/neabigread.

Learn more about the Big Read at https://www.nhhumanities.org/bigread

NH Humanities Scholar Damian Costello received his Ph.D. in theological studies from the University of Dayton and specializes in the intersection of Catholic theology, Indigenous spiritual traditions and colonial history.

Remembering Together

Discussion Topic: What traditions do you most want your family to continue?

Our lives are made up of stories.  The Remembering Together program offers seniors a unique opportunity to share with one another some of their memorable life stories. These stories are often a source of encouragement, mutual appreciation, perspective, and a sense of connection.  Of course, there are also times when a story gives everyone a good laugh.

Please join The Mental Health Center of Greater Manchester and the Manchester City Library for a conversational group at the Senior Center on Mondays at 10:30am, September 11 & 18, October 16 & 30, November 6 & 13. Virtual attendance is also available!

For questions, call Susan Harmon at 603-624-6550 x7620 or email sharmon@manchesternh.gov.

Author Talk: Quetico Connection: Finding Spirit in a Million Acres of Canadian Wilderness

The Manchester City Library invites you to an intimate reading of John Doelman's new book, “Quetico Connection” on Tuesday November 14th at 6PM in the auditorium Doelman brings the personal experience of a lifetime of wilderness canoe tripping to you through introspective poetry and connecting photography.

Quetico Connection is a threaded collection of intimate, yet simple, poems and photos which began on a two-week solo canoe trip into Quetico. The reading and presentation here will blend vivid photography, stills and videos, with a little history of place, and a compelling narrative interspersed with poetry from the book and a few that promise a next edition. It is sure to be a memorable evening.

Doelman is a semi-retired real estate broker in Florida who now lives permanently in New Hampshire. John has been creatively writing, especially poetry, since the 2nd grade. The outdoors has been one of Doelman’s great loves for over 50 years. His first canoe trip was 1969 in northern Maine, on the Allagash River system. Five weeks in the wilderness changed his life and launched a deep love of paddling. In 2012 Doelman discovered Quetico Provincial Park in NW Ontario while searching online for a new place to canoe camp. His life changed.

For questions, call Nic Young at 603-624-6550 x7620 or email nyoung3@manchesternh.gov.

The Christmas Spider!

Have you ever heard about the legend of the Christmas Spider? Grab one of these adult craft kits and read all about it!

These colorful, beady little spiders are about as cute as a spider can be. This popular holiday project is festive, fun and easy. All you need are a few beads, craft wire, some basic tools and that good old holiday spirit.

These kits are for adults only and will be available on Tuesday, December 12th in the Library Rotunda while supplies last. For more information about this fun little project please contact Yvonne L. at 603-624-6550 ext. 7619 or e-mail yloomis@manchesternh.gov.
