Memorial Day
ABOUT THE AUTHORS
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Ann Aguirre has been a clown, a clerk, a savior of stray kittens, and a voice actress, not necessarily in that order. She grew up in a yellow house across from a cornfield, but now she lives in Mexico with her family. She writes all kinds of genre fiction, but she has an eternal soft spot for a happily ever after.
Born and raised in the saltiest of cities in Utah. Lillian is an avid reader, cat mom to three demons, and loves writing sexy stories that twist you up inside.
Kathryn Moon is a country mouse who started dictating stories to her mother at an early age.
The fascination with building new worlds and discovering the lives of the characters who grew in her head never faltered, and she graduated college with a fiction writing degree. She loves writing women who are strong in their vulnerability, romances that are as affectionate as they are challenging, and worlds that a reader sinks into and never wants to leave. When her hands aren't busy typing they're probably knitting sweaters or crimping pie crust in Ohio. She definitely believes in magic.
is a USA Today bestselling author and professional procrastinator from Cleveland, Ohio. She’s always preferred beasts to boys, the macabre to the milquetoast, the unknown darkness in the shadows to the Chad next door. She lives in a crumbling old Victorian with a scaredy-cat dachshund, where she writes nontraditional romances featuring beastly boys with equal parts heart and heat, and is waiting for the Hallmark Channel to get with the program and start a paranormal lovers series.

On September 29, 2022, Juno passed by Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, at an altitude of only ~350 km over its icy surface. The flyby provided the first close look at the Jovian moon in over 20 years, when NASA’s Galileo spacecraft flew past at a similar distance on January 3, 2000. Results from the Galileo mission suggested a salt water ocean may exist on Europa beneath its icy crust. The study of Europa is of high priority because the existence of a salty ocean suggests the possibility of habitability, as many scientists believe life on Earth may have started in our oceans.
In this session, participants will learn about the successful flyby, Juno’s science objectives for the flyby, and tour Europa through the high-resolution visible images returned.
Sangeeta Gautam is a NASA Solar System Ambassador and a mathematician by education, a space explorer by curiosity, and a peace builder by passion. She has worked on three continents and always made time to empower the next generation through STEM activities wherever she goes. Sangeeta enjoys working in the community and bringing people together to dialogue and explore space and its mysteries. She believes space truly unites us. Her goal is to engage the community in dialogue and make the world a better place for the children of the world. Toward this goal, she joined NASA/JPL as a Solar System Ambassador in 2021 and is the bridge between the community and NASA/JPL.

If you are a fan of classic literature and love a hurricane with your beignets while you're reading, join us for this conversation with author & professor at Tulane University, T.R. Johnson as he discusses his book "New Orleans: A Writer's City" which unfolds a book-lover's map of this unique city, inviting us to experience what it means to live in a great city of literature.
The neighborhoods of New Orleans have given rise to an extraordinary outpouring of important writing. Over the last century and a half or so, these stories and songs have given the city its singular place in the human imagination. This book leads the reader along five thoroughfares that define these different parts of town – Royal, St. Claude, Esplanade, Basin, and St. Charles – to explore how the writers who have lived around them have responded in closely related ways to the environments they share. On the outskirts of New Orleans today, the city's precarious relation to its watery surroundings and the vexed legacies of race loom especially large. But the city's literature shows us that these themes have been near to hand for New Orleans writers for several generations, whether reflected through questions of masquerade, dreams of escape, the innocence of children, or the power of money or of violence or of memory.
Part of the Imagining City Series, we were pleased to host author Christopher Morash in April where he discussed his book, "Dublin: A Writer's Series". You can view the talk on our YouTube Channel.
About the author: T. R. Johnson is a Professor of English and Weiss Presidential Fellow. He has taught at the University of New Orleans, Boston University, and the University of Louisville, and has been teaching at Tulane since 2004. He is the author of The Other Side of Pedagogy: Lacan’s Four Discourses and the Development of the Student Writer (2014), and A Rhetoric of Pleasure: Prose Style and Today’s Composition Classroom (2003); he is the editor of New Orleans: A Literary History (2019). His current book is New Orleans: A Writer’s City, which was published by Cambridge University Press in early 2023. Since 2001, he has hosted a contemporary jazz radio program in New Orleans at WWOZ 90.7 FM.

We had so much fun with Carla that, by popular demand, we're having her back! Once again, we'll be talking about Carla's early books as well as her American Historicals and her latest World War II Stories. Carla says her 4th "Unlikely" book will be out and up for discussion, too. Oh, wait, there's more! Carla is also a former seasonal ranger in the National Park Service. We hope to see our romance, history, and nature buffs again!

Award-winning author Carla Kelly is a veteran of the New York and international publishing world. Carla is best known for her Regency Romances, those novels of manner and wit, made popular more than two centuries ago by Jane Austen. Carla has made certain types of Regencies her own, particularly novels and stories about people who are not lords and ladies. Many of them are hard-working and hard-fighting members of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in the Channel Fleet, and the British Army on the Spanish Peninsula.
Carla’s interested in the Regency Era is mainly fueled by her scholarly interest in the Napoleonic Wars on land and sea. She credits her own upbringing with some of this interest. As the daughter of an officer in the U.S. Navy, she crossed the 180th Meridian as a child, and has the certificates to prove that she is a member in good standing of The Domain of the Golden Dragon, since the age of 13 months.
Carla’s other major historical interest is the U.S. Indian Wars (1854-1890). She began her writing career writing short stories about the people who lived in army garrisons throughout the American West. She wrote these stories as a direct result of working as a ranger in the National Park Service at Fort Laramie National Historic Site. Currently, she has gone back another century to write a series about a brand inspector and his wife in 18th century New Mexico, when it was a crown colony of Spain. Other novels set in the West are forthcoming, probably along with more Regencies.
Readers and reviewers enjoy Carla’s no-nonsense, no-frills writing, which she can trace directly to her high school (yes, high school) training in journalism. Her stories are noted for historical accuracy and wry humor, featuring ordinary people who do extraordinary things, when called upon (much like people she knows today).
Carla’s Westerns reflect her interest in turn-of-the-century Wyoming ranching, coal mining, and the exodus of former Americans living in revolutionary Mexico. Some of these novels include the history of Mormons historically involved in those events. Others feature her continuing interest in open-range ranching, and a personal favorite, Yellowstone National Park in its early days.
Carla has done some non-fiction work, too, editing the fur trade journal of Swiss painter Rudolf F. Kurz, and writing a history of Fort Buford (North Dakota), the site of Sitting Bull’s 1881 surrender to U.S. Army forces. Included in her non-fiction work is a collection of her Prairie Lite columns written for a North Dakota daily newspaper.
But historical fiction remains Carla’s first interest. She is noted among readers and writers for the accuracy of her historical research, principally because she is a historian and it matters that the details be correct.
Carla’s varied employments has included public relations work at hospitals and a hospice; contract research for the State Historical Society of North Dakota; adjunct professor at a North Dakota university; reporter for a small North Dakota daily newspaper; and a ranger in the National Park Service. She has an undergraduate degree in Latin American History from Brigham Young University, and a master’s degree in Indian Wars/Historiography from University of Louisiana, Monroe.
In her free time, Carla likes to flop on her couch and read crime fiction, and what history interests her at the time. She lives in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

We learned so much from Sarah last time she was with us, we just had to have her back! This time, we'll dig into practical tips to make your children's birthday parties and school lunches eco-friendly and low waste. We'll also be discussing how kids, families, and communities can be more sustainable as some towns/cities/states move towards free lunches for all. All ages are welcome!
Sarah Robertson-Barnes, founder of the Sustainable in the Suburbs blog, is a freelance writer, educator, and consultant. She lives with her husband, two kids, and rescue dog outside of Toronto, Ontario. Sustainable in the Suburbs is a resource for living low waste with kids in a culture of convenience.
A Note from Sarah: A sustainable lifestyle with kids is not only possible, but critically important for our future and theirs. I hope that by sharing what works for our family, you are inspired to make changes in your daily life too!
This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library. We are pleased to be partnering with the Ashland Sustainability Committee, GreenUp Ashland, and a multitude of MA Libraries for this event.
