Going to Extremes

GOING TO EXTREMES -An award-winning adventure travel journalist for The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and The Providence Journal, Peter Mandel hunts his stories and photos in the world's far corners, including Antarctica, India, Egypt, Patagonia, the fjords of Norway, the mountain pathways of Japan, and the deserts of Africa.

The author of ten books, he'll show slides of his most extreme travel experiences—surviving a coup in Ecuador, visiting a ‘city’ of penguins at the South Pole, fishing for piranha on Brazil’s Rio Negro, floating in the Goodyear Blimp, sailing on an Arctic icebreaker, camping in the African bush, and kayaking to the Statue of Liberty—and talk about how adventure travel turns to prose in today's media.

Meditation for Healthy Living

We try to exercise and eat right to keep us fit and healthy. But doctors are now recognizing that a positive attitude and ‘food for the soul’ are just as important. Discover a simple meditation technique that can melt away stress and be a powerful addition to a healthy living regimen. Join Dr. Matthew Raider  who has been meditating for over 30 years for this engaging and powerful workshop. There will even be a meditation sitting as well!

No registration Required.

Dr. Raider graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School with honors in 1979. He maintains a clinical practice in geriatric medicine. He held a faculty position at the University of Connecticut Medical School and has coordinated the geriatrics curriculum for the Middlesex Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program for over 30 years. He is currently medical director of four Connecticut health care facilities.

As a physician and long-time meditator, Dr. Raider has a strong interest in meditation and its relationship to health and disease prevention/treatment. He has lectured extensively on the subject in hospitals and other venues in the United States and Canada and recently he spoke at the United Nations. He is also a contributing author to “Meditation as Medication for the Soul” by Rajinder Singh.

Forever Young Adult

Join our book club for adults who read YA books. Teens are welcome, too! October's book is Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram.

Darius Kellner speaks better Klingon than Farsi, and he knows more about Hobbit social cues than Persian ones. He's about to take his first-ever trip to Iran, and it's pretty overwhelming--especially when he's also dealing with clinical depression, a disapproving dad, and a chronically anemic social life. In Iran, he gets to know his ailing but still formidable grandfather, his loving grandmother, and the rest of his mom's family for the first time. And he meets Sohrab, the boy next door who changes everything.

Darius has never had a true friend before, but now he's spending his days with Sohrab playing soccer, eating rosewater ice cream, and sitting together for hours in their special place, a rooftop overlooking the Yazdi skyline. Sohrab calls him Darioush--the original Persian version of his name--and Darius has never felt more like himself than he does now that he's Darioush to Sohrab. When it's time to go home to America, he'll have to find a way to be Darioush on his own.

Copies of this month's book will be available at the Circulation Desk.

Join our book club for adults who read YA books. Teens are welcome, too! October's book is Darius the Great Is Not Okay by Adib Khorram.

Darius Kellner speaks better Klingon than Farsi, and he knows more about Hobbit social cues than Persian ones. Hooked on Books

Are you an intermediate reader? Do you like to have fun? Are you “hooked on books?” Then our monthly after-school book club is for you! Each month we will learn about a different genre or format.  This month, it's historical fiction, featuring I Survived: The Sinking of the Titanic, 1912, by Lauren Tarshis. Read this month's selection, then join us for a book talk, snack and fun activity.

This month we will discuss our book, learn some historical facts about the fateful journey of the Titanic, learn the difference between first class and third class (and how class might have impacted a passenger's chance of survival), learn a little bit about Morse Code, and more! (Recommended for intermediate readers, grades 2-5)

Copies of this month's selection are available at the Children's circulation desk. Registration is required.

This month's genre/format: Historical Fiction

Ten-year-old George Calder can't believe his luck -- he and his little sister, Phoebe, are on the famous Titanic, crossing the ocean with their Aunt Daisy. The ship is full of exciting places to explore, but when George ventures into the first class storage cabin, a terrible boom shakes the entire boat. Suddenly, water is everywhere, and George's life changes forever.
