Adult Book Club

The Adult Book Club is for anyone 18 and older who loves to read and wants to discuss great books with other members of the community. Meetings are on the 2nd Tuesdays at 6pmYou have the option of attending virtually or in person in the conference room. Please register for the meeting and indicate whether you would like to attend Virtually or In Person.

Click here to see the 2023 Book List.  You can pick up a copy of this month's book at the circulation desk.

In order to promote an open and friendly environment, we ask that members please:

  • Speak up when you have something you want to contribute to the conversation. Do not feel pressured to speak if you are content to listen to others.
  • Listen thoughtfully to others when they are speaking so that you can respond or carry on the conversation from where the last person left off.
  • Respect others’ opinions, especially when they differ from your own.
  • Be brief when talking to help insure that everyone has the opportunity to speak.
  • Do not talk over one another or have side conversations that disrupt the main discussion.
  • Keep personal political and religious viewpoints out of the discussion unless they relate to the book being discussed.
  • Do not feel pressure to finish the book. Your interest in the topic alone is enough to contribute to the conversation and you can still learn and have fun listening to others discuss the book.

It is the mission of the Marlborough Public Library Adult Book Club to provide an open and friendly environment within which all members of the community are welcome to discuss books they have read; also to expand members’ personal literary experiences by introducing them to books that they might otherwise not have selected. Monthly books, either fiction or nonfiction, are chosen by the book club members on a yearly basis in the fall and are provided in various formats (e.g. large print and audio) to ensure that all members of the community who wish to participate are able to do so.

Please register for the book club and indicate whether you would like to attend Virtually or In Person.

Virtual: Q&A with Author Kate Spencer

Join Kate Spencer for this very special Q&A about her incredibly fun and funny debut novel, "In a New York Minute", while also talking about all of the incredible projects she is involved in! Bring your questions as this will be a rapid fire Q&A!

Please register for this event here.

About In a New York Minute:

Franny Doyle is having the worst day. She’s been laid off from her (admittedly mediocre) job, the subway doors ripped her favorite silk dress to ruins, and now she’s flashed her unmentionables to half of lower Manhattan. On the plus side, a dashing stranger came to her rescue with his (Gucci!) suit jacket. On the not-so-plus side, he can’t get away from her fast enough.

Worse yet? Someone posted their (entirely not) meet-cute online. Suddenly Franny and her knight-in-couture, Hayes Montgomery III, are the newest social media sensation, and all of New York is shipping #SubwayQTs.

Only Franny and Hayes couldn’t be a more disastrous match. She’s fanciful, talkative, and creative. He’s serious, shy, and all about numbers. Luckily, in a city of eight million people, they never have to meet again. Yet somehow, Hayes and Franny keep running into each other—and much to their surprise, they enjoy each other’s company. A lot. But when Franny’s whole world is turned upside down (again!), can she find the courage to trust in herself and finally have the life—and love—she’s always wanted?

About Kate:

Kate Spencer is the co-host of the award-winning podcast Forever35 and author of the memoir The Dead Moms Club.  In a New York Minute is her first novel. She writes a bi-monthly column for InStyle and her work has been published by the Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Cosmopolitan, Buzzfeed, and numerous other places. Previously she worked as a senior editor and producer at VH1. She lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two daughters.

We're thrilled to be collaborating with a multitude of MA Libraries to bring this program to our communities. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library.

Virtual-Author Talk with Mia Sosa
If you haven't read Mia Sosa, you are missing out! Her books will bring a smile to your face, warmth to your heart, and heat to your cheeks. We are so looking forward to having this time to ask her all of our burning (pun intended) questions about her books, writing, and inspirations. Bring your questions as this will be a rapid fire Q&A!

Please register for the zoom link

About Mia's latest book, The Wedding Crasher:

Just weeks away from ditching DC for greener pastures, Solange Pereira is roped into helping her wedding planner cousin on a random couple’s big day. It’s an easy gig… until she stumbles upon a situation that convinces her the pair isn’t meant to be. What’s a true-blue romantic to do? Crash the wedding, of course. And ensure the unsuspecting groom doesn’t make the biggest mistake of his life.

Dean Chapman had his future all mapped out. He was about to check off “start a family” and on track to “make partner” when his modern-day marriage of convenience went up in smoke. Then he learns he might not land an assignment that could be his ticket to a promotion unless he has a significant other and, in a moment of panic, Dean claims to be in love with the woman who crashed his wedding. Oops.

Now Dean has a whole new item on his to-do list: beg Solange to be his pretend girlfriend. Solange feels a tiny bit bad about ruining Dean’s wedding, so she agrees to play along. Yet as they fake-date their way around town, what started as a performance for Dean’s colleagues turns into a connection that neither he nor Solange can deny. Their entire romance is a sham… there’s no way these polar opposites could fall in love for real, right?

About Mia:

USA Today bestselling author Mia Sosa writes funny, flirty, and moderately dirty contemporary romances that celebrate our multicultural world. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and Yale Law School, Mia practiced First Amendment and media law in the nation’s capital before trading her suits for sweatpants. Born and raised in East Harlem, New York, Mia is finally ready to call Maryland her home; she lives there with her college sweetheart, their two book-obsessed daughters, and one dog that rules them all.

We're thrilled to be collaborating with a multitude of MA Libraries to bring this program to our communities. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library.

Virtual-Author Talk with Louise Gray

Have you ever wondered who picked your Fairtrade banana? Or why we can buy British strawberries in April? How far do you think your green beans travelled to get to your plate? And where do all the wonky carrots go? Above all, how do we stop worrying about our food choices and start making decisions that make a difference? In an effort to make sense of the complex food system we are all part of, Louise Gray decides to track the stories of our five-a-day, from farm to fruit bowl, and discover the impact that growing fruits and vegetables has on the planet. Join us for this very important discussion as we celebrate Earth Day 2023!

Through visits to farms, interviews with scientists and trying to grow her own, she digs up the dirt behind organic potatoes, greenhouse tomatoes and a glut of courgettes.

In each chapter, Louise answers a question about a familiar item in our shopping basket. Is plant protein as good as meat? Is foraged food more nutritious? Could bees be the answer to using fewer chemicals? How do we save genetic diversity in our apples? Are digital apps the key to reducing food waste? Is gardening good for mental health? And is the symbol of clean eating, the avocado, fuelling the climate crisis?

As pressure grows via social media to post pictures of food that ticks all the boxes in terms of health and the environment, these food stories from the author of the award-winning The Ethical Carnivore are also a personal story of motherhood and the realisation that nothing is ever perfect.

About the author:

Hello, I’m Louise Gray. After five years at The Daily Telegraph as Environment Correspondent, I am now a freelance writer. I have worked for the BBC, The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Country Life, The Spectator and Scottish Field. I have excellent contacts across the world and a deep knowledge of environmental issues. I have chaired a number of debates and am also available for public speaking events.

I have written a book for Bloomsbury entitled The Ethical Carnivore, that discusses the ethics of meat by only eating animals I have killed myself. It was shortlisted in the Fortnum and Mason Food Awards and won two awards at The Guild of Food Writers Awards, Best Food Book 2017 and Best Investigative Work. The book has received positive reviews, including in The Guardian and Evening Standard, which are all listed on the Amazon page.

We're thrilled to be collaborating with a multitude of MA Libraries to bring this program to our communities.  This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Ashland Public Library.

Beyond Flowers: Host and Nest Needs of Lesser-considered Flower-visitors

Join us in the conference room for a special presentation and slideshow!  Beyond Flowers: Host and Nest Needs of Lesser-considered Flower-visitors

The slideshow is a review of flower-visiting insects photographed and collected in Wendell, MA, with an emphasis on unusual species (flies, moths, wasps, and beetles) that have surprising host needs, such as fungi, lichen, carrion, water, bird's nests, skin flakes, trees, and plant roots. The concept is to give folks a more expansive and holistic view of what comprises a "pollinator habitat".

Adam Kohl is a skilled naturalist with professional experience as a field botanist, entomological surveyor, and plant propagator. Adam has worked as an independent contractor for Norcross Sanctuary, Maine Audubon, Gegear Lab at UMass Dartmouth, Landscape Interactions, and has previously worked as a seed collector and propagation and nursery assistant at Native Plant Trust. Currently, Adam serves as the Conservation Agent for the towns of Leverett and Wendell, and in the past 3+ years, Adam has independently documented thousands of species living in Wendell, MA, including many nocturnal flower-records for moths.

Virtual -Romance Panel: The Rise of Monsters
We did not get nearly enough time to talk about Monster Romance at our last panel so we're doing it again! This time, we welcome authors Ann Aguirre, Lillian Lark, Kathryn Moon, and CM Nascosta as they talk about the rising appeals of "monsters" in romance. How did "Mon-Rom" become a thing and how does it keep capturing our imaginations? This is sure to be an amazing conversation!  *For Adults

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Ann Aguirre

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Ann Aguirre has been a clown, a clerk, a savior of stray kittens, and a voice actress, not necessarily in that order. She grew up in a yellow house across from a cornfield, but now she lives in Mexico with her family. She writes all kinds of genre fiction, but she has an eternal soft spot for a happily ever after.

Lillian Lark

Born and raised in the saltiest of cities in Utah. Lillian is an avid reader, cat mom to three demons, and loves writing sexy stories that twist you up inside.

Kathryn Moon

Kathryn Moon is a country mouse who started dictating stories to her mother at an early age.

The fascination with building new worlds and discovering the lives of the characters who grew in her head never faltered, and she graduated college with a fiction writing degree. She loves writing women who are strong in their vulnerability, romances that are as affectionate as they are challenging, and worlds that a reader sinks into and never wants to leave. When her hands aren't busy typing they're probably knitting sweaters or crimping pie crust in Ohio. She definitely believes in magic.

CM Nascosta

is a USA Today bestselling author and professional procrastinator from Cleveland, Ohio. She’s always preferred beasts to boys, the macabre to the milquetoast, the unknown darkness in the shadows to the Chad next door. She lives in a crumbling old Victorian with a scaredy-cat dachshund, where she writes nontraditional romances featuring beastly boys with equal parts heart and heat, and is waiting for the Hallmark Channel to get with the program and start a paranormal lovers series.
