The Role of Code-Breaking in WW II

Hosted by the Marlborough Historical Society.

It should be no surprise that your luck at poker will significantly increase if you peek at your opponents cards. What's true in poker is also true in war - Chuck Pross of Marlborough will present a short, non-technical talk on how cryptanalysis (code-breaking) helped shorten World War II by as much as two years, and in doing so, saved millions of lives. The role of code-breaking during World War II was classified until the 1980's, long after most of the history of that war was written, so much of its role is not well known. He'll also describe how codes are used by each of us every day without our even realizing it.

Hooked on Books

Are you an intermediate reader? Do you like to have fun? Are you “hooked on books?” Then our monthly after-school book club is for you! Each month we will learn about a different genre or format. This month, it's Horror Fiction, featuring The Ghost Next Door by R.L. Stine. Read this month's selection (available at the Children's circulation desk), then join us for a book talk, snack and fun activity. (Recommended for intermediate readers, grades 2-5) PLEASE REGISTER

This month's genre/format: Horror Fiction

After waking from a horrific nightmare, Hannah Fairchild is baffled to discover that the empty house next door has suddenly been sold to a new family, as if overnight. Pale and mysterious, twelve-year-old Danny somehow has the ability to survive a series of near-fatal accidents. The more Hannah investigates, the more questions pile up.  Is Danny the ghost next door?

Forever Young Adult

Join our book club for adults who read YA books. Teens are welcome, too! October's book is The Agony House by Cherie Priest.

Denise and her family left New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Now they are moving back, wagering the last of their family's money on fixing up an old, rundown house and converting it to a bed and breakfast. But when floors collapse, deadly objects rain down, and Denise hears creepy voices, it's clear that something more sinister lurks there. Answers may lie in an old comic book Denise finds in the attic: the lost, final project of a famous artist who disappeared in the 1950s. Denise isn't budging from her new home, so she must unravel the mystery-on the pages and off-if she and her family are to survive...

Copies of this month's book will be available at the Circulation Desk.

Going to Extremes

GOING TO EXTREMES -An award-winning adventure travel journalist for The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, National Geographic, and The Providence Journal, Peter Mandel hunts his stories and photos in the world's far corners, including Antarctica, India, Egypt, Patagonia, the fjords of Norway, the mountain pathways of Japan, and the deserts of Africa.

The author of ten books, he'll show slides of his most extreme travel experiences—surviving a coup in Ecuador, visiting a ‘city’ of penguins at the South Pole, fishing for piranha on Brazil’s Rio Negro, floating in the Goodyear Blimp, sailing on an Arctic icebreaker, camping in the African bush, and kayaking to the Statue of Liberty—and talk about how adventure travel turns to prose in today's media.

Meditation for Healthy Living

We try to exercise and eat right to keep us fit and healthy. But doctors are now recognizing that a positive attitude and ‘food for the soul’ are just as important. Discover a simple meditation technique that can melt away stress and be a powerful addition to a healthy living regimen. Join Dr. Matthew Raider  who has been meditating for over 30 years for this engaging and powerful workshop. There will even be a meditation sitting as well!

No registration Required.

Dr. Raider graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School with honors in 1979. He maintains a clinical practice in geriatric medicine. He held a faculty position at the University of Connecticut Medical School and has coordinated the geriatrics curriculum for the Middlesex Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program for over 30 years. He is currently medical director of four Connecticut health care facilities.

As a physician and long-time meditator, Dr. Raider has a strong interest in meditation and its relationship to health and disease prevention/treatment. He has lectured extensively on the subject in hospitals and other venues in the United States and Canada and recently he spoke at the United Nations. He is also a contributing author to “Meditation as Medication for the Soul” by Rajinder Singh.

November Mondays: Math Explorations

Come join us for three sessions of math exploration! We will use math tools, math manipulatives and math games to explore a variety of mathematical concepts.
