Adult Book Club

This month the Adult Book Club is reading The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood

“As with The Handmaid’s Tale and the rise of the misogynist right in the US, the passing of time has made her work seem ever more eerily prophetic. But then, as Atwood has always said, everything she writes about is possible and much of it has already happened. The environmental ravages caused by oil and the terrifying consequences of it running out; corporate empire-building, scarcening resources and increasing inequality; genetic experimentation and the badlands of the internet: all are followed to their (un)natural conclusions.”

This program is free and open to the public.  Copies are available at the circulation desk. Learn more about the Book Club on our website.

Forever Young Adult

Join our book club for adults who read YA books. Teens are welcome, too! March's book is I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson.

At first, Jude and her twin brother Noah, are inseparable. Noah draws constantly and is falling in love with the charismatic boy next door, while daredevil Jude wears red-red lipstick, cliff-dives, and does all the talking for both of them. Years later, they are barely speaking. Something has happened to change the twins in different yet equally devastating ways . . . but then Jude meets an intriguing, irresistible boy and a mysterious new mentor. The early years are Noah's to tell; the later years are Jude's. But they each have only half the story, and if they can only find their way back to one another, they'll have a chance to remake their world.

Copies will be available at the circulation desk.

Hooked on Books

Are you an intermediate reader? Do you like to have fun? Are you “hooked on books?” Then our monthly after-school book club is for you! Each month we will learn about a different genre or format.  This month, it's science fiction, featuring Galaxy Zack, Book 1: Hello, Nebulon!, by Ray O'Ryan. Read this month's selection, then join us for a book talk, snack and fun activity. (Recommended for intermediate readers, grades 2-5)

Copies of this month's selection are available at the Children's circulation desk. Registration is required.

This month's genre/format: Science Fiction

It's the year 2120, and Zack Nelson and his family are moving from Earth to the planet Nebulon. Zack is super nervous about what life on Nebulon will be like.  Will he make new friends? What will school be like? Will he still be able to communicate with his friends on Earth? Join Zack as he explores and adjusts to life on this strange, futuristic planet.

Adult Book Club

This month the Adult Book Club is reading Between the world and me by Ta-Nehisi Coates

“For Ta-Nehisi Coates, history has always been personal. At every stage of his life, he's sought in his explorations of history answers to the mysteries that surrounded him--most urgently, why he, and other black people he knew, seemed to live in fear ... In [this book], Coates takes readers along on his journey through America's history of race and its contemporary resonances through a series of awakenings--moments when he discovered some new truth about our long, tangled history of race, whether through his myth-busting professors at Howard University, a trip to a Civil War battlefield with a rogue historian, a journey to Chicago's South Side to visit aging survivors of 20th century America's 'long war on black people,' or a visit with the mother of a beloved friend who was shot down by the police"

This program is free and open to the public.  Copies are available at the circulation desk. Learn more about the Book Club on our website.
