Current Events Chat

Hickory Corner librarian Mary Astarita will moderate a weekly discussion of current events. All adults are welcome.

We will follow an open format, where the librarian offers headlines for discussion. On select dates, we will follow an open format for the first half of the session and a structured format for the second half, in order to give considered, focused attention to a Special Topic. The Special Topic will be shared in advance, so that attendees will have time to prepare a concise, written response to be read aloud. The author of the response will have up to two minutes to read their response. After all written responses have been presented, we will thoughtfully discuss the presentations.

If you are interested in presenting a prepared response, call the reference desk at 609-448-0957 to find out the date of the Special Topic sessions.

Developing Cognitive Skills in Children

We are excited to announce a two-part workshop focused on nurturing early cognitive skills in children. As parents and caregivers, we understand the importance of providing our children with a strong foundation for their intellectual growth and development. This workshop series aims to equip families with practical strategies and insights to foster cognitive development in young children. We are honored to announce that Christine D'Alessandro, Head of the Lower School at Stuart Country Day School, will be sharing her expertise and valuable insights during these sessions.

During these sessions, Christine D'Alessandro will delve into key aspects of cognitive development in children and provide practical tips for parents and caregivers to support their child's learning journey. Topics will include the importance of play, language development, problem-solving skills, and more. This workshop series is designed to be interactive and informative, offering attendees the opportunity to engage in discussions, ask questions, and connect with other families in the community. We believe that investing in early cognitive development lays the groundwork for a lifetime of learning and success.

(Virtual) The Wandering Jews of New Jersey

Travel back in time and visit the first Jewish settlements in the urban centers of Newark, Paterson, Passaic, New Brunswick, Jersey City, and Trenton. See the old Bamberger’s Department Store, Beth Israel Hospital, and the old Newark synagogues — B’nai Jeshurun, B’nai Abraham, and Oheb Shalom. Visit the waterfalls of Paterson and its Jewish-owned silk factories, and explore the Jewish farming communities of Alliance, Vineland, and Woodbine - the first all-Jewish town in the world — everyone who ran the town, including the mayor, the police and fire chiefs, and members of the town council, was Jewish and spoke Yiddish. You will also get to visit the old vacation spots of Lakewood and Atlantic City. Presented by Oscar Israelowitz, a licensed NYC tour guide, author and experienced lecturer.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

Adult Fiction Book Club

We’ll read The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak. "Two teenagers, a Greek Cypriot and a Turkish Cypriot, meet at a taverna on the island they both call home. In the taverna, hidden beneath garlands of garlic, chili peppers and creeping honeysuckle, Kostas and Defne grow in their forbidden love for each other. A fig tree stretches through a cavity in the roof, and this tree bears witness to their hushed, happy meetings and eventually, to their silent, surreptitious departures. Years later a Ficus carica grows in the back garden of a house in London where Ada Kazantzakis lives. This tree is her only connection to an island she has never visited -- her only connection to her family's troubled history and her complex identity as she seeks to untangle years of secrets to find her place in the world. A moving, beautifully written, and delicately constructed story of love, division, transcendence, history, and eco-consciousness.”

Registration is required.

Spinning Silver by Naomi Novak: Join us for this fantastical retelling of Rumpelstiltskin for Jewish-American Heritage Month! "Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders, but her father is not a very good one. Free to lend and reluctant to collect, he has left his family on the edge of poverty--until Miryem intercedes. Hardening her heart, she sets out to retrieve what is owed, and soon gains a reputation for being able to turn silver into gold. But when an ill-advised boast brings her to the attention of the cold creatures who haunt the wood, nothing will be the same again. For words have power, and the fate of a kingdom will be forever altered by the challenge she is issued."

Current Events Chat

Hickory Corner librarian Mary Astarita will moderate a weekly discussion of current events. All adults are welcome.

On select dates, we will follow an open format for the first half of the session and a structured format for the second half, in order to give considered, focused attention to a Special Topic. If you are interested in presenting a prepared response, call the reference desk at 609-448-0957 to find out the date of the Special Topic sessions.

Join us a virtual book discussion for the Big Library Read selection, Wild New World by Dan Flores. About the book: In thrilling narrative style, informed by genomic science, evolutionary biology, and environmental history, Flores celebrates the astonishing bestiary that arose on our continent and introduces the complex human cultures and individuals who hastened its eradication, studied America’s animals, and moved heaven and earth to rescue them. Eons in scope and continental in scale, Wild New World is a sweeping yet intimate Big History of the animal-human story in America.

For a limited time, from May 9 through May 23, using the MCLS Overdrive collection via your Libby app or visiting eLibraryNJ (https://elibrarynj.overdrive.com/), MCLS library card holders can immediately check out and download the ebook or the digital audiobook of Wild New World for their normal loan period.

Book Buddies Club: Cemetery Boys

Author Aiden Thomas captivates with the complexity of their characters in Cemetery Boys. When Latinx boy Yadriel attempts to prove himself- and his gender- to his magical family, things don't quite go as planned. Now he has to deal with an unruly ghost he didn't mean to summon as the two boys attempt to solve a mystery together while facing the complexities of being young and looking for acceptance. Exploring themes of family, community, loss, and the struggles of growing up queer, Cemetery Boys is the perfect read to kick off Pride Month. Library staff Emily Weber will lead the discussion.

Advanced registration is appreciated.

Poetry Reading Group

The Poetry Reading Group (PRG) meets on the second Saturday of each month at 2pm. Come read, share, and discuss the best in classic and contemporary poetry! We look at four pages of poetry by a celebrated poet, then read each poem aloud and discuss it as a group. Poems are provided to everyone who attends.

The goal is to learn about and appreciate poetry in a way that brings great poems to life. We find that we grow in our understanding as we talk about how we connect with each poem.  We expand our awareness hearing everyone’s insights, and we leave even more inspired, weaving poetry into everyday life.  Heartily welcoming new members! Hope you can join us soon!

No registration necessary.
