(Virtual) Creating Christmas

Creating Christmas: How a Centuries-Old European Celebration Became Something Uniquely American. By the mid-1600s, the centuries-old European celebration of Christmas was such a drunken, bawdy, public affair that the early Puritans arriving in America put an immediate ban on any Christmas celebrations in their Godly communities. New York newspapers in the early 1800s illustrate that Christmas was far from a silent night and instead was a night of crime and terror. How then did the Christmas holiday become such a treasured tradition of gift giving, Santa Claus, family feasts, and domestic bliss? Join historian and archivist Mickey DiCamillo as he explains how the holiday was tamed, domesticated, and transformed into something uniquely American. Co-sponsored by Friends of the Hickory Corner Library, Friends of the West Windsor Library, and Hightstown Library Association.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

(Virtual) Images of America: Washington Crossing

Robert Sands and Patricia Millen provide an illustrated lecture on their recently-published book Images of America: Washington Crossing, exploring the history of the site of General George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River with his Continental Army in 1776 to the Battle of Trenton-- through the creation of both parks that mark its place in memorial. The talk will detail the history chronologically and bring the story of both the NJ and PA parks and the people who helped create them up to the present day, where an annual reenactment of the crossing continues every year.

Robert W. Sands Jr. holds a MA in museum professions from Seton Hall University. He is the author of three previous Images of America books: Glassboro, Woodbury, and Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Patricia E. Millen holds a degree in American Studies. An author of two books, including From Pastime to Passion: Baseball and the Civil War, and numerous articles, she began her career at Washington Crossing State Park and is a founding board member of the Washington Crossing Park Association.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

Play With Clay: Winter Wonderland

On Thursdays in November and December, we’ll use air dry clay to make items associated with winter and the holidays. Bring your sculpture home the night of the program to dry. Then, if you’d like, you can bring it back to paint the following week. You’re welcome to swing by just once, or come back every week to create a whole winter wonderland of fun! For children of all ages, with a caregiver to supervise. This week’s sculpture is an evergreen tree. Sponsored by the Friends of the Lawrence Library.

Registration is required prior to the event. Please complete one registration form for the entire family/group coming together. If you register and realize you cannot make it, please phone so someone else can have your slot.
