In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with--of all things--her mind. True chemistry results."

Join us as Jeanne Johnson, docent at Princeton University Art Museum, as well as Morven Museum and Garden, presents the story of a phenomenal woman, Belle da Costa Greene, who became one of the most prominent librarians in American history. While cataloging and working with rare books at the Princeton University library, her work impressed the nephew of New York millionaire J. Pierpont Morgan, financier and investment banker of the late 1800s. Morgan hired Greene for the newly constructed Pierpont Morgan Library in 1906, which eventually led to her directorship of the Morgan Museum and Library. Becoming one of the most important people in Morgan’s life and his library, Greene worked at the library for over 43 years, internationally known for her auction bidding expertise. She toured the world in search of rare manuscripts and became a cutthroat bidder, even outbidding the British museum on several occasions. Years after her death, knowledge that Greene passed as white for her entire professional life became known, explored and discussed.

This is an overview of 100 years of history, investigating the manifestation of American women's struggles for equal rights through music and songwriting. It begins in the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the music of women's suffrage and labor strikes. Next come the early songs of female independence associated with the "flappers" of the Roaring Twenties. And there’s lots more, including "Rosie the Riveter," "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'," "I'm a Woman," and "I Am Woman". Presented by John Clark and his Great American Music Experience.

Trenton resident Donald Proffit, a former arts educator and school principal, was assigned to alternative service in Alaska as a Vietnam-era conscientious objector. He will read from his soon-to-be published memoir, Hardship Alaska, and talk about these formative years of exile, service, soul-searching, and self-discovery. Arriving in Anchorage, Alaska on Halloween night 1970 after a ten-day transcontinental journey by car—his trek replete with a breakdown on a Yukon mountain pass, a freak snow gale on the Saskatchewan prairie, rough men in roadhouses, Soviet skaters, and good Samaritans—he realized quickly that he was no longer in Allentown, Pennsylvania. His world was about to change forever.
Former Lawrence High School principal Donald Proffit holds a Master of Education in Creative Arts Education from Rutgers University and a Master of Science in Education from Bank Street College and Parsons School of Design. His undergraduate degree is from Westminster Choir College. He received the D. Bennett Mazur Award for Lifetime Achievement from the New Jersey Lesbian and Gay Coalition for having made “sustained and profound contributions to transforming society at great risk to himself,” has twice received the New Jersey Governor’s Award in Arts Education, and is a John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Teacher Fellow.

Van Gogh did not begin painting until his late twenties, and most of his better-known works were produced during his final two years. Producing more than 2000 artworks consisting of around 900 paintings and 1100 drawings and sketches, along with over 2000 letters (mostly between Van Gogh and his brother Theo), historians are able to discern the man whose works are so admired today and are able to explore the mystery of his death. In many of his letters to Theo, Van Gogh wrote about the artists he admired. However, his greatest tribute to these artists was by absorbing their ideas and depictions in his own paintings and drawings. His magnificent versions are so interesting when shown juxtaposed with these admired artists’ works, Millet, Monet, Manet, Rembrandt, Delacroix, Cezanne, Seurat, plus others. Presented by Jeanne Johnson, docent at Princeton University Art Museum.
