Adult Fiction Book Club

Our book club selection for August will be We are the Light by Matthew Quick: "Lucas Goodgame lives in Majestic, Pennsylvania, a quaint suburb that has been torn apart by a recent tragedy. Everyone in Majestic sees Lucas as a hero--everyone, that is, except Lucas himself. Insisting that his deceased wife, Darcy, visits him every night in the form of an angel, Lucas spends his time writing letters to his former Jungian analyst, Karl. It is only when Eli, an eighteen-year-old young man whom the community has ostracized, begins camping out in Lucas's backyard that an unlikely alliance takes shape and the two embark on a journey to heal their neighbors and, most importantly, themselves."

(Virtual) Heavy Lies the Crown: The Brief & Brilliant Career of Basquiat

After a troubled but privileged childhood, Jean-Michel Basquiat burst onto the 1980s art scene with vision and vitality. He was quickly recognized and earned celebrity status and friendships with leading artists like Andy Warhol. Basquiat’s work often focused on subjects that were personally meaningful to him as a young black man, including race, class and police violence. Find out how his paintings, peppered with poetry and sometimes inscrutable symbols, still resonate today. Presented by Jane Oneail, the founder of Culturally Curious, an arts education consulting firm specializing in art appreciation programs.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

On Saturday, October 14, there will be a solar eclipse!  Looking at the sun is very tempting, but it can result in serious eye damage to the retina.  Come make a DIY viewer using a cereal box and other common materials so you can safely view the sun!  Suggested for children ages 6-11 years, with a caregiver to supervise. Sponsored by the Friends of the Lawrence Library.

Registration is required prior to the event. Please complete one registration form per child. If unable to attend, please call to cancel.

---

Safe Eclipse Viewing

Observing the sun directly, without the benefit of eye protection provided by special eclipse viewing glasses, will likely result in serious personal injury, up to and including permanent eye damage and blindness. If the User Instructions imprinted on the glasses are not followed, or if damaged or modified glasses are used, permanent eye injury could result.

By using the eclipse glasses to view the sun, you agree with the following:

  • You understand and accept the risks associated with improper use of the eclipse glasses;
  • You accept full responsibility for, and assume all risks associated with, the act of viewing the sun, with or without the use of the eclipse glasses.

The Mercer County Library System is not responsible for any damage incurred to your person or your personal property while viewing the sun during the October 14, 2023 or April 8, 2024 eclipse.
