Current Events Chat

Hickory Corner librarian Mary Astarita will moderate a weekly discussion of current events. All adults are welcome.

We will follow an open format, where the librarian offers headlines for discussion. On select dates, we will follow an open format for the first half of the session and a structured format for the second half, in order to give considered, focused attention to a Special Topic. The Special Topic will be shared in advance, so that attendees will have time to prepare a concise, written response to be read aloud. The author of the response will have up to two minutes to read their response. After all written responses have been presented, we will thoughtfully discuss the presentations.

If you are interested in presenting a prepared response, call the reference desk at 609-448-0957 to find out the date of the Special Topic sessions.

Please register.

Kids Can Paint Like. . . Helen Zughaib

The Kids Can Paint Like. . . Program introduces older kids, tweens, and teens (ages 8+) to a famous artist and then instructs the youth on how to create an art piece inspired by the artist.  We encourage a special adult to accompany the youth in their life to this program, ie. mother and son, father and daughter, aunt and niece, etc., so that both generations can create their own artwork together.  In this program, we will be learning about Helen Zughaib, an award-winning Lebanese American artist, in honor of Arab American Heritage Month, and making our own artwork inspired by one of her pieces.

Registration is required prior to the event. Please complete one registration for each participant. If you need to cancel your registration, please notify us as soon as possible to allow a space to open up for another.

Kids Can Paint Like. . . Sirin Thada

The Kids Can Paint Like. . . Program introduces older kids, tweens, and teens (ages 8+) to a noteworthy artist and then instructs the youth on how to create an art piece inspired by the artist.  We encourage a special adult to accompany the youth in their life to this program, ie. mother and son, father and daughter, aunt and niece, etc., so that both generations can create their own artwork together.  In this program, we will be learning about Sirin Thada, a contemporary Thai-American artist, in honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and making our own artwork inspired by one of her pieces.

(Virtual) Manet: Amazing Art, Life and Legacy

Édouard Manet knew early in his life that he wanted to become an artist. His passion led him to be one of the first 19th-century artists to paint modern life. Manet is known today as an influential painter who left his own unique mark on the art world. In spite of scandal, secrets and illness, Manet gave us paintings that are considered some of the most important works of the nineteenth century and are held in many major international museums and galleries. Presented by Jeanne Johnson, docent at the Princeton University Art Museum as well as Morven Museum and Gardens.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.
