In recent decades, the world has started to confront the experiences of the "pink triangles" -- approximately 15,000 homosexuals sent to Nazi concentration camps between 1933 and 1945. These victims were joined with thousands of other homosexuals who faced their own forms of persecution at the hands of the Nazis outside of the camp walls. The pink triangles have been remembered in the United States in complex and nuanced ways from the Nuremberg Trials to the beginning of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This talk by Dr. Thomas R. Dunn, a researcher of the LGBTQ+ past and professor of Communication Studies at Colorado State University, shares this far lesser-known part of the story.

Gustav Klimt was the leading Viennese painter of the early 20th century and is revered for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objet d’art. He was a founder of the Vienna Secession, a group of 40 Viennese artists who were against the classicist establishment. Klimt’s distinct style was influenced by an eclectic range of influences: Egyptian, Classical Greek, Byzantine, engravings of Albrecht Durer, medieval European paintings and Japanese drawing styles. Inspired by trips to Venice and Ravenna where he saw the use of gold and mosaics, Klimt entered his Golden Phase. The Kiss and Portrait of Adele Block-Bauer are the most famous paintings from this period, the latter being the subject of Woman in Gold, a movie from 2015 depicting the reclamation of the painting which was seized by the Nazis. Presented by Jeanne Johnson, docent at the Princeton University Art Museum as well as Morven Museum and Gardens. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Ewing Library, Friends of the Hopewell Library, Friends of the Lawrence Library and Friends of the West Windsor Library.
