Poetry Circle: Victor Hugo (1802 – 1885)

We seldom find an example of a writer who mastered as many forms, and who gave the world as many remarkable works as the great French writer Victor Hugo. In his lifetime, he not only gained recognition as a poet, novelist and playwright, but also as an intellectuel engagé. He was a writer very much involved in the social and political issues and disputes of his time. He gained the reputation as a poetic virtuoso at an early age. In his poetry, Hugo used a great variety of styles and addressed many subjects. He wrote about everything, from love poems to forceful poems of political protest, and to poems that express the profound grief he felt at the loss of loved ones. Poetry Circle friends Ariane and Mark will lead the discussion.

Advanced registration is appreciated.

Cook Talks: Tiramisu and Affogato

Learn to make two famous Italian desserts which are flavored with espresso. Tiramisu is a desert layered with lady fingers dipped in espresso, mascarpone and whipped cream, dusted with cocoa and chilled. It may sound fancy when frequently praised by Ina Garten, but Affogato is vanilla ice cream with espresso poured over it, a quick and pleasing end to a summer meal taken al fresco. And learn how to make espresso in a Bialetti espresso maker.

Upcycle Challenge: Perpetual Calendar

Pick from a variety of recycled materials (cardboard, fabric, plastic, paper, etc.) to complete the challenge of the week. Keep track of your projects in your own logbook, and move your pin up our "Extraordinary Upcyclers" board as you complete more challenges. Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you’ve got something specific in mind. You can also complete the challenge from home and email a picture of your creation to be added to your log book. For all ages, with an adult to supervise. This week’s challenge is to create a perpetual calendar (a calendar you can adjust to show any date far into the future). Sponsored by the Friends of the Lawrence Branch.

This is a drop-in program. There's no need to register, and you can stop by any time from 1-5 to participate.

(Virtual) Mary Anning on England’s Jurassic Coast

In 1799, Mary Anning was born into a humble family in the medieval port of Lyme Regis on the south shore of England, part of its Jurassic Coast. Little did she know she would go on to develop an unmatched eye for finding the undiscovered creatures embedded in 185 million years of geological history in the notoriously unstable cliffs. Completely self-taught, academia came calling to consult and buy her finds as she continued to make discoveries that changed the scientific world, yet she was unacknowledged and uncredited by the scientific community in her own time. Join Anglophile and former UK resident Claire Evans for a lively talk on “the greatest fossil hunter the world has ever known” and the UNESCO World Heritage site she was lucky enough to call home. Sponsored by the Friends of the Ewing Library.

(Virtual) Rediscovering Joseph Bonaparte's Point Breeze Estate in Bordentown

Recent archaeological excavations in Bordentown have unearthed the remains of Joseph Bonaparte's palatial estate, Point Breeze. Joseph, the elder brother of Napoleon Bonaparte and former King of Spain and Naples, fled to the United States in 1815. He lived in New Jersey from 1816 until 1839. The excavations have revealed remains of Joseph's first mansion and recovered an intriguing collection of artifacts that provide a unique glimpse of the lifestyles of the rich and famous in 19th century New Jersey. Our speaker Richard Veit, Ph.D., is a Professor of Anthropology and Associate Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Monmouth University. Co-sponsored by the Friends of the Hickory Corner Library, the Hightstown Library Association, the Friends of the Hopewell Library, the Friends of the Lawrence Library and the Friends of the West Windsor Library.

Upcycle Challenge: Paper Beads

Pick from a variety of recycled materials (cardboard, fabric, plastic, paper, etc.) to complete the challenge of the week. Keep track of your projects in your own logbook, and move your pin up our "Extraordinary Upcyclers" board as you complete more challenges. Materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own if you’ve got something specific in mind. You can also complete the challenge from home and email a picture of your creation to be added to your log book. For all ages, with an adult to supervise. This week’s challenge is to create paper beads you can then use to make jewelry or decorations. Sponsored by the Friends of the Lawrence Branch.

This is a drop-in program. There's no need to register, and you can stop by any time from 1-5 to participate.

(Virtual) I'm with the Banned

Banned Books Week is September 18-24! Celebrate your right to read with Lisa and Anna from the Mercer County Library System. Every year, the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom compiles a list of The Most Challenged Books. We've chosen John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men, a book that has been repeatedly challenged throughout the years. We will discuss the book, reasons for the item being banned or challenged, and the importance of access in upholding intellectual freedom.

Registration with an email is required, so we can send you a link to connect through GoToMeeting. You will receive the link approximately 24 hours before the program.

Registration is required prior to the event. Please complete one registration form for the entire family/group coming together.  If you register and realize you cannot make it, please phone so someone else can have your slot.
