5:30 PM - 6:45 PM

The Medfield Public Library and The Center at Medfield present HALLOWEEN HAUNTINGS—two American tales of suspense. Written in the days of ominously flickering candles and kerosene lamps, “The Shadows on the Wall” and “The House That Was Not” continue to thrill. In the wake of a sudden mysterious death, “The Shadows on the Wall” draws four siblings to a familiar but menacing New England parlor. “The House That Was Not” lures an unsuspecting new bride across the bleak Nebraska prairie. Authored by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman (1903) and Elia Wilkinson Peattie (1898),respectively, these tales evoke the America of a century ago, enthralling audiences today. In this unique one-woman show, professional actress Michèle LaRue portrays eight characters. The Chicago-born and New Jersey – based performer tours nationally with her repertoire of century-old American TALES WELL TOLD.

This performance will take place at The Center at Medfield, at 1 Ice House Road.

Michèle LaRue has delighted in performing literature from America’s Gilded Age, for nearly 30 years. Her 500 presenters have included Washington’s Smithsonian Institution, Chicago’s Newberry Library, New York’s Mohonk Mountain House, the Missouri History Museum, and public libraries and museums, from Rhode Island to South Carolina to Washington State. She is a member of both actors’ unions: Actors’ Equity Association and SAG-AFTRA. As a writer and editor, she has collaborated on several notable theatre books—from The Story of 42nd Street to Memories of a Munchkin.

Mary E. Wilkins Freeman (1852 – 1930), a popular and prolific short-story writer, was born and lived most of her life in Eastern Massachusetts, continuing her work after marrying and moving to Metuchen, New Jersey. She wrote insightfully and with sympathetic humor about her fellow small-town New Englanders—and she penned many ghost stories. Elia Wilkinson Peattie (1862 – 1935) grew up in her native Michigan. With her husband, a fellow journalist, she made her home, first in Chicago, then in Omaha. The Chicago Tribune’s first woman reporter, she wrote fiction, as well as observant editorials and reviews, for major papers in both cities.

Memoir Book Club
5:00 PM - 6:00 PM

Join us to discuss The Secret Life of Dorothy Soames by Justine Cowan.

Recommended by The New York Times, The Saturday Evening Post, Amazon Book Review, The Atlanta Journal Constitution, Publisher’s Weekly, Kirkus and more, Justine Cowan’s remarkable true story of how she uncovered her mother’s upbringing as a foundling at London’s Hospital for the Maintenance and Education of Exposed and Deserted Young Children has received acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. In the U.K., it has been featured in The Mail on Sunday, The Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror and The Spectator. The Telegraph calls it “extraordinary" and Glamour magazine chose it as the best new book based on real life.

The story begins when Justine found her often volatile mother in an unlit room writing a name over and over again, one that she had never heard before and would not hear again for many years – Dorothy Soames. Thirty years later, overcome with grief following her mother’s death, Justine found herself drawn back to the past, uncovering a mystery that stretched back to the early years of World War II and beyond, into the dark corridors of the Hospital for the Maintenance and Education of Exposed and Deserted Young Children. Established in the eighteenth century to raise “bastard” children to clean chamber pots for England’s ruling class, the institution was tied to some of history’s most influential figures and events. From its role in the development of solitary confinement and human medical experimentation to the creation of the British Museum and the Royal Academy of Arts, its impact on Western culture continues to reverberate. It is the reason we read Dickens’ Oliver Twist and enjoy Handel’s Messiah each Christmas.

It was also the environment that shaped a young girl known as Dorothy Soames, who bravely withstood years of physical and emotional abuse at the hands of a sadistic headmistress—a resilient child whose only hope would be a daring escape as German bombers rained death from the skies.

Heartbreaking, surprising, and unforgettable, The Secret Life of Dorothy Soames is the true story of one woman’s quest to understand the secrets that had poisoned her mother’s mind, and her startling discovery that her family’s fate had been sealed centuries before.  -Amazon

Great Trials That Changed History - The Disappearance of Dr. Parkman: Blood & Ivy at Harvard
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

Join Retired Massachusetts Superior Court Justice Dennis J. Curran for "The Disappearance of Dr. Parkman: Blood & Ivy at the Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts 1849." a lecture from his series “Great Trials That Changed History: A Judge’s Perspective”

The 1849 murder of Dr. George Parkman in Boston stands as one of the most - if not the most - sensational trials of the 19th century. This case has it all: a grisly murder, a dismembered corpse, a wealthy victim, a respected suspect, a questionable lead witness for
the prosecution and unusual court proceedings. Nearly 60,000 spectators were ushered through the Boston courtroom in 10-minute intervals. An all-out media blitz ensued, with journalists traveling from Europe to Boston to cover the trial. Ultimately, the case spawned books, documentaries and even an iPhone app. The forensics of the case—one of the first trials to allow scientific evidence as testimony, and the first to allow dental evidence—are explored along with a brief history of the “Spunkers” Club, a secret group of body-snatchers at the Harvard Medical School. The trial is legally historic as it established the legal standard of “proof beyond a reasonable doubt” – a requirement that has since been adopted by just about every state in the nation.

Intro to Induction Cooking with Chef Tom
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Introduction to Induction cooking

The future of cooking is here!

Induction cooktops are the next generation of electric stovetops. They are more energy efficient, faster, and safer than traditional coil burners and even Halogen cooktops.

Many power companies are offering rebates for upgrading to the energy efficient induction cooktop, but there are a few drawbacks as well.

This class will cover the basics of what the induction cooktop is, what pots and pans will and will not work with it, and demonstrate some of the safety features and unique properties of this technology.

You do NOT need to register for this program, but if you'd like to receive an email reminder or two, go ahead and click the register button below.

Jon Mael Author Visit How Hip Hop's Super Showdown Changed Music Forever
6:30 PM - 7:45 PM

July 3, 1981, was a pivotal night for the future of America's newest art form: hip hop. In New York's Harlem World Club, the Fantastic Romantic Five and the Cold Crush Brothers competed with an unprecedented $1,000―and their reputations―on the line in a highly anticipated rap battle. The show drew hundreds of fans to settle a question that still dominates hip hop circles: who's the best?

In Harlem World, journalist Jonathan Mael chronicles this fateful night of hip hop rivalry and shares a new look at how Harlem helped ignite a musical revolution.

Join local (Sharon, MA) author and educator, Jon Mael, for a discussion about his new book, Harlem World.  Copies will be available for purchase and signing!

Adults and teens are welcome! Please click register below so we know how many chairs to set up for this event.
