Sustaining the Monarch, One Yard at a Time
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Katie Banks Hone (AKA The Monarch Gardener) has been gardening for her entire adult life. She is known for her eight foot tall tomato plants adorning her front yard as well as the riot of flowers she planted at her Ipswich, MA property. Recently her home's wildlife gardens and the monarch conservation initiatives she's started were a front page feature in the Ipswich Chronicle.

Katie was a 2012 recipient of the US Fish and Wildlife Service's Slow the Flow grant. This helped her transform her family's Ipswich River-front property from the traditional foundation plantings they inherited from the former owners into a haven for wildlife, while also minimizing storm runoff into the river. (You can read about this major undertaking, and the wildlife she has attracted, on her blog: A Riverside Garden Makeover) Ever since, she has been helping local residents install native pollinator and wildlife gardens at their properties. Recently she added native milkweeds to the already beautiful flower gardens at Ipswich's Bialek park, which was lacking milkweed to sustain monarchs. Three weeks later she found the first two monarch eggs ever laid there. As a former Senior Aquarist and Educator at the New England Aquarium, Katie cared for hundreds of different animals including endangered piping plovers, Nile crocodiles, jellyfish, Atlantic puffins and even an African pygmy hedgehog. She also created two-story tropical waterfalls, Boston Island shorebird landscapes and brought marine biology-based education programs to schools throughout New England.

An Evening with Author Jane Healey
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Jane Healey, author of The Saturday Evening Girls Club and The Beantown Girls will share her newest work.

In The Saturday Evening Girls Club, for four young immigrant women living in Boston’s North End in the early 1900s, escaping tradition doesn’t come easy. But at least they have one another and the Saturday Evening Girls Club, a social pottery-making group offering respite from their hectic home lives—and hope for a better future. In The Beantown Girls, in the latter part of WWII, the morale of the U.S. military was so low, the Red Cross came up with the idea of Red Cross Clubs on wheels (aka clubmobiles), so they could bring “a bit of home” to the front lines of the war. The author had the privilege of reading hundreds of letters and diaries of these girls (really, women) who staffed the clubmobiles. Their bravery, compassion, strength and sense of humor in the face of constant danger was nothing short of extraordinary.

Copies of her books will be available for sale, courtesy of the Andover Bookstore. Jane lives outside of Boston with her husband and two daughters.

Who's Watching You? Owls of the World
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM

This program is suitable for all ages. Preschool children must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Everyone loves owls, yet how many of us have seen an owl up close? Explore the world of owls with two talented naturalists and six lively owls. Naturalist, Marcia Wilson and wildlife photographer, Mark Wilson will introduce us to the owls of New England and beyond. Marcia and Mark will share the field marks, signs and skills needed to find wild owls without disturbing them. They will introduce us to six live owls and give us a hooting lesson, and share tips on how to attract and protect owls near us. Most owls thrive on eating small rodents like mice and voles. Some owls take insects, ducks, snakes, fish, frogs or bats. One owl even relishes a meal of skunk.

Mark and Marcia Wilson are a charismatic team who teach, study, photograph and share their passion for the natural world. Each has nurtured a fascination for birds since childhood. Both have biology degrees and share a keen interest in learning about nature. They offer Eyes on Owls programs, as well as WILDSHOT books, photography programs and natural history photos.
