Panel Discussion of Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
6:30 PM - 8:30 PM

Note the time change for this event from 7:00pm to 6:30pm.
In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?

Panelists will discuss their experience of reading Coates’ book, the significance of his message, the lived experience of black men and boys in America, and how we as a community can support them.

Facilitator: Shaunielle McDonald, Director of Diversity Initiatives at Brooks School.

Panelists will include:
Michael Eatman, Director of Community Life at Pike School
Martin Henson from Black Lives Matter, Boston
Trey Brown, Office of Admissions, Phillips Academy
Linda Carter Griffith, Assistant Head of School for Equity, Inclusion and Wellness at Phillips Academy

Greenscapes 101: Create a Healthier Landscape
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Learn how to transform your lawn and gardens into “Greenscapes.” Established Greenscapes have plants and turf with deep roots, which are naturally resistant to drought, weeds, and disease. Greenscapes are good for you, your wallet and your environment in many ways. By following the recommendations in this presentation, you will:
•    Save money on your water bills;
•    Nurture a safe environment for your family;
•    Create more habitat for wildlife;
•    Enjoy more free time by doing less landscape maintenance;
•    Reduce stormwater pollution; and
•    Protect your community’s water resources.

Robert (Rusty) Russell joined Merrimack River Watershed Council as its executive director in 2016, following on a decade of teaching graduate students in Tufts University’s urban and environmental policy and planning program. He also has worked as a journalist and corporate lawyer, and directed a health policy program for a state agency. A certified planner, he holds a B.A. in history from Amherst College and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. He grew up in Western Massachusetts, on the shore of another great river, the Connecticut.

Greenscapes North Shore Coalition
The Greenscapes North Shore Coalition is a collaborative of municipalities and partner organizations, focusing on stormwater, water conservation, and other watershed-related issues. Since its founding in 2007, Greenscapes partners have delivered outreach and education services across the North Shore. Partner organizations include Ipswich River Watershed Association, Eight Towns and the Great Marsh, Salem Sound Coastwatch, and the Merrimack River Watershed Council. There are currently 19 municipal members of Greenscapes North Shore, including the Town of Andover. Visit www.greenscapes.org for more information.

An Afternoon with Author Richard Rubin
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Author Richard Rubin returns to Memorial Hall Library to discuss and share his latest book, Back Over There.

In Last of the Doughboys, Richard Rubin introduced readers to a forgotten generation of Americans: the men and women who fought and won the First World War.  Interviewing the war's last survivors face-to-face, he knew well the importance of being present if you want to get the real story.  But he soon came to realize that to get the whole story, he had to go Over There, too.  So he did, and discovered that while most Americans regard that war as dead and gone, to the French, who still live among its ruins and memories, it remains very much alive.

Years later, with the centennial of the war only magnifying this paradox, Rubin decided to go back Over There to see if he could, at last, resolve it.  For months he followed the trail of the American Expeditionary Forces on the Western Front, finding trenches, tunnels, bunkers, century-old graffiti and ubiquitous artifacts.  But he also found an abiding fondness for America and Americans, and a colorful corps of local after-hours historians and archeologists who tirelessly explore these sites and preserve the memories they embody while patiently waiting for Americans to return and reclaim their own history and heritage.  None of whom seemed to mind that his French needed work.

Based on his wildly popular New York Times series, Back Over There is a timely journey, in turns reverent and iconoclastic but always fascinating, through a place where the past and present are never really separated.

Sponsored by the Friends of MHL. His book will be available for purchase.

The Foster's Pond Corporation engaged Bob last year to create a watershed management plan for Foster's Pond, using a brand-new, first-in-the-nation model he developed for MassDEP. The panel will also feature the three Andover officials whose expertise is most critical to the protection of Foster's Pond and its watershed: Health Director Tom Carbone; Conservation Director Bob Douglas; and Deputy Public Works Director/Highway Superintendent Marc Fournier. Plan to come - and bring your questions! The information shared pertains to anyone living near a body of water or in a watershed area.

"When Ada’s clubfoot is surgically fixed at last, she knows for certain that she’s not what her mother said she was—damaged, deranged, crippled mentally as well as physically. She’s not a daughter anymore, either. What is she?
World War II continues, and Ada and her brother, Jamie, are living with their loving legal guardian, Susan, in a borrowed cottage on the estate of the formidable Lady Thorton—along with Lady Thorton herself and her daughter, Maggie. Life in the crowded cottage is tense enough, and then, quite suddenly, Ruth, a Jewish girl from Germany, moves in. A German? The occupants of the house are horrified. But other impacts of the war become far more frightening. As death creeps closer to their door, life and morality during wartime grow more complex. Who is Ada now? How can she keep fighting? And who will she struggle to save?
 "

Writing Great College Essays with CollegeWise
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

A lot of great kids write average (even bad) college essays—essays about “life lessons learned from football” or “how my trip to Europe broadened my cultural horizons.” Better tales are there for the writing. This workshop will show you what admissions officers really look for in great college essays, and offer suggestions for finding and sharing your best stories. We’ll even share the five most over-used topics you must avoid and give you tips on how to start and finish your essays.

Abby Van Geldern from College Wise will present and teens and parents/caregivers are welcome to attend.

Friends' Concert Series: Sandro Russo Cancelled
2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

The concert has been cancelled by the performer.

Acclaimed Italian-born concert pianist, Sandro Russo, is best known for his idiomatic interpretations of the romantic piano literature. His program will showcase multiple facets of the 19th and 20th century repertoire.

Acclaimed for his profound sense of poetry and distinctive style, Russo has been in demand as a soloist in many venues around the world. He unanimously receives accolades for his sparkling virtuosity and his playing has often been referred to as a throwback to the grand tradition of elegant pianism and beautiful sound. Composer Lowell Liebermann wrote of him, “Sandro Russo is a musician's musician and a pianist's pianist. There is no technical challenge too great for him, but it is his musicianship that ultimately makes the greatest impression. His interpretations reveal a unique and profound artist at work.”

Born in San Giovanni Gemini, Italy, Mr. Russo displayed exceptional musical talent from an early age. In 1995, he graduated summa cum laude from the V. Bellini Conservatory, and earned the Pianoforte Performing Diploma from the Royal College of Music in London with honors. Soon after Mr. Russo moved to the United States in 2000, he won the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra Concerto Competition, and has ever since performed in such prestigious concert halls as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Weill and Zankel halls at Carnegie Hall, Salle Cortot in Paris, Teatro Politeama in Palermo and the Konzerthaus Berlin.

His recitals include performances for The Rachmaninoff Society, the Dame Myra Hess series in Chicago, Concerts Grand in Santa Rosa (CA), the American Liszt Society, the Houston International Piano Festival, the Husum Festival of Piano Rarities in Germany and the Chetham's International Piano Festival in Manchester (U.K.), among others.

Mr. Russo has appeared as a soloist with the Slovak Philharmonic in Bratislava, the Jacksonville Symphony in Florida and the Brussels Chamber Orchestra at the opening gala of The Music Festival of the Hamptons in 2008. He also gave three highly praised performances of the Rachmaninoff 3rd Concerto in Palermo, Italy and was the featured soloist with the New York Asian Symphony for a Japan tour.

His performances have aired on major radio stations in the US and abroad. His latest recording, Rachmaninov – Solo Piano Works, released on the Steinway & Sons label, has received great critical acclaim and has been chosen “Disc of the Month” by Italy’s The Classic Voice magazine. He is a Steinway Artist. www.sandrorussopianist.com

The Joy of Herbs with Rita Wollmering
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

The Andover Seed Library Lecture Series welcomes back Rita Wollmering. Come learn everything about the wonderful world of herbs – organic growing conditions (sunlight, soil, fertilizer, water), harvesting techniques and preserving your herbal bounty (vinegars, oils, honeys, cleaning products and so much more).

Rita Wollmering is the founder, manager and grower of The HERB FARMacy in Salisbury, MA. She grew up on her family’s 500 acre dairy farm in Minnesota. Like some farm kids, she wanted to experience the wide world, so she joined the Peace Corps and worked on agricultural projects in the Philippines. After her graduate studies, Rita continued her international work with USDA and USAID in Washington, DC until her urge to get “back to the farm” led her to pursue her herb farming ambitions. While working year round on the farm and greenhouses, she takes her “break” doing international volunteer work on the USAID Farmer-to-Farmer Program, most recently working with medicinal herb production in Nepal and Sri Lanka.

The Life and Legend of the Afghan Warrior Who Helped Topple the Taliban Regime
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

For four years, Professor Brian Glyn Williams roamed the mountains of Afghanistan retracing a covert operation that saw U.S. Green Beret Special Forces unite with ancient Mongol Uzbek horse warriors to fight the common Taliban foe. His greatest breakthrough came when he was allowed to live with the Uzbeks’ notorious leader, General Dostum, ‘The Taliban Killer.’ The result of his fieldwork and embed with a larger than life Mongol Uzbek warlord who called American elite warriors his friends was his recent book, The Last Warlord. The Life and Legend of Dostum, the Afghan Warrior Who Led US Special Forces to Topple the Taliban Regime.

Dr. Williams will bring his book and the real background story behind the events covered in it and the movie,12 Strong, (half of which is based on his book) to life with extraordinary photographs of the covert 2001 US-Uzbek horse campaign taken by the CIA, Dostum and Green Berets. This covert CIA, Green Beret, Uzbek operation saw a brotherhood of men from different worlds, forged in battle, topple the Taliban regime by seizing an ancient shrine. The images of the remote battlefields high in the Hindu Kush Mountains, in the fall of 2001, are the only visual history of a secret campaign few were aware of. Dr. Williams, who has also worked extensively in Afghanistan for the CIA’s Counter Terrorism Center and US Army’s Information Operations, will recreate this epic tale for the first time, using the actual images of the men depicted in the movie.

Professor Brian Glyn Williams has both a scholarly background in Afghanistan and “boots on the ground” credentials. He has traveled extensively in Afghanistan tracking suicide bombers for the CIA's Counter Terrorism Center and doing PSYOPs (Psychological Operations) for the U.S. Army's secretive Joint Information Operations Warfare Command. Most recently, Pulitzer Prize winner Steve Coll has written about Dr. Williams’ fieldwork in Afghanistan in his latest book (February 2018) titled Directorate S. Dr. Williams also has Hollywood links and the character from his book the Last Warlord appears in the Afghan-based movie, 12 Strong. The Declassified True Story of the Horsesoldiers (Dr. Williams advised A-List actor Chris Hemsworth, “Thor” in the Avengers series, on the movie set in New Mexico). See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Denciie5oA

Dr. Williams has a PhD in Central Asian Islamic history and is a full professor of Islamic History at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (tenure received in 2006, and full professorship 2013) and formerly taught Muslim history at the University of London. His previous books have been reviewed by the Times, Boston Globe, Wall Street Journal etc., endorsed by former CIA Director General David Petraeus (who described his 2016 book Counter Jihad as “a superb chronicle of the campaigns to counter Al Qaeda, the Islamic State, and their affiliates—by a student of, and participant in, those campaign.”).

Another of Williams’s books, Predators. The CIA's Drone War on Al Qaeda, was credited by the British rock band Muse in Rolling Stone with inspiring their bestselling, Grammy-winning album "Drones." Previous books have been published by Oxford University Press, Harper Collins, and the military-focused DC-based commercial press Potomac etc. Dr. Williams has testified in terrorism cases at Guantanamo Bay as an expert witness, wrote a manual for the U.S. Army on Afghanistan that was published in a civilian version as Afghanistan Declassified, and recently traveled to the Mosul region in northern Iraq to assist in freeing a Yazidi slave from her ISIS captor (this story was covered by NPR).

In addition to his fieldwork in the Islamic world which ranges from Bosnia and Kosovo to the remote tribal zones of Pakistan where Bin Laden was killed and the Himalayan warzone of Kashmir, Dr. Williams has trained U.S. Marines deploying to Afghanistan on tribal history and has lectured at Special Operations Command, MacDill Airbase, and U.S. Air Force Special Operations Command and worked for the Directorate of National Intelligence on chemical and biological terror threats. Professor Williams has also spent time in the Soviet Union and speaks Russian and Turkish. For more on Professor Williams, including his CV, articles for Huffington Post, links to previous books on espionage, warfare, ethnic groups and terrorism, and photos taken in Iraq/Afghanistan/Pakistan, visit his website www.brianglynwilliams.com

Critical Hours: Search and Rescue in the White Mountains
3:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Author Sandy Stott will share his book, Critical Hours: Search and Rescue in the White Mountains, which is due to be released on April 3, 2018. A misread map, a sudden storm, a forgotten headlamp—and suddenly a leisurely hike turns into a treacherous endeavor. In the past decade, inexpensive but sophisticated navigation devices and mobile phones have led to alarming levels of overconfidence on the trail. Adding to this worrisome trend, the increasing popularity of ventures into mountainous terrain has led hikers seeking solitude—or an adrenaline rush—into increasingly remote or risky forays. Sandy Stott, the “Accidents” editor at the journal of the Appalachian Mountain Club, delivers both a history and a celebration of the search and rescue workers who save countless lives in the White Mountains—along with a plea for us not to take their steadfastness and bravery for granted. Filled with tales of astonishing courage and sobering tragedy, Critical Hours will appeal to outdoor enthusiasts and armchair adventurers alike.--University Press of New England.

“You need this book whether you’re a White Mountains veteran or someone slinging on a pack for the first time. Stott’s wise and urbane writing on the search and rescue culture has us compulsively reading these narratives of (mostly) loss, and of those who rescue us from our own misjudgments. Here’s the last word in staying safe and self-aware in the mountains. Add this book to your ten essentials as required reading!” Laura Waterman, author of Forest and Crag: A History of Hiking,Trail Blazing, and Adventure in the Northeast Mountains.

Sandy Stott is a former editor of AMC's journal Appalachia, a longtime English teacher, and a lifelong wanderer in the White Mountains.
