Terri Kelley & Bill Donelan: Songs America Loves
2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Andover residents, Terri Kelley and Bill Donelan, have teamed up to form Singular, a piano/vocal duo that has performed for public and private gatherings in the Merrimack Valley, including a popular Celtic concert at the Lawrence Public Library. Their program will include a collection of American songs from 1850-1970, along with seasonal favorites.

About the performers

Terri Kelley began piano studies at age three with her father, a professional musician, and has continued classical piano studies throughout her life. She holds B.A. and M.A. degrees as well as several diplomas in piano performance. Terri received the Eartha Dengler Award for her cultural contributions as Artistic Director of the Catherine McCarthy Trust Concert Series (2004-2017), and currently serves as Artistic Director of The White Fund's new Concert Series. She is the author of two books, Piano Is Our Forte, and Music Theory for Pianists. She currently performs as pianist and accompanist, and teaches piano, organ, and voice privately in Andover.

Bill Donelan, a versatile baritone, is at home singing classical, popular, and theatrical music. A native of Boston, he has lived in Andover for more than 30 years, and has performed in more than a dozen musicals. He has sung as a member and soloist with Boston area choruses, including the New England Classical Singers, Coro Allegro, and The Spectrum Singers. In 2015, he gave a Lieder recital in North Andover that included Gustav Mahler’s Kindertotenlieder

Sponsored by the Friends of MHL.

Film Screening: Who Is Dayani Cristal?
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

“Who Is Dayani Cristal” tells the story of a migrant who found himself in the deadly stretch of the Sonora Desert known as the “corridor of death” and shows how one life becomes testimony to the tragic results of the U.S. war on immigration.  Arizona border police discover a decomposing male body.  Under the tattered t-shirt is a tattoo that reads “Dayani Cristal.”  As the subsequent forensic investigation unfolds, Mexican actor and activist Gael Garcia Bernal retraces this man’s steps along the migrant train in Central America.  In an effort to understand what it must have felt like to make this final journey, he embeds himself among migrant travelers on their own mission to cross the border.  This docu-drama gives us rare insight into the human stories that are so often ignored in the immigration debate. Running time is 85 minutes; directed by Marc Silver.

Winner of the Sundance 2013 Cinematography Award.

Tales from the Home of the World's Worst Weather
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Bitter cold, dense fog, heavy snow, and record winds: Mount Washington is known worldwide for its unpredictable and dangerous weather. For a mountain its size, why is Mt. Washington called the “Home of the World’s Worst Weather”?

Join Mount Washington Observatory's Will Broussard for an investigation into the unique life and work of weather observers stationed at the observatory year-round. We will explore how the mountain's weather works and what it can tell us about New England’s own weather patterns. This program will include interactive demonstrations, weather instruments, stunning photography, and video footage from the summit. For adults and children aged 6 and up.

Will Broussard is the Observatory’s Education Coordinator, where he coordinates and leads programs on Mt. Washington’s natural, cultural, and scientific history. He has an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Maine and a Master of Science degree in environmental studies from Antioch University New England in Keene, New Hampshire. Originally from midcoast Maine, his passions include hiking and bird watching.

Art of the Recital: Joshua Peckins & Eliko Akahori
2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Concert violinist Joshua Peckins performs masterpieces of the violin and piano repertoire in electrifying duo performances with pianist Eliko Akahori. From the most passionate and expressive sonatas, to dazzlingly virtuosic showpieces, to intimate and lyrical salon pieces written for simple pleasure – the unique programs present a wide range of experiences for listeners, all celebrating the wide artistic potential of the violin.

About the performers

Joshua Peckins, award-winning concert violinist, has performed throughout North and South America, Europe and Asia, from Carnegie Hall to Beijing’s Performing Arts Center. Having played chamber music and recitals in the United States, Vienna, Paris, Italy, Slovenia, Austria, Japan, and Canada, he was also invited to give solo performances and pedagogical lectures in Japan – broadcast on national television. Today, he is most passionate and active as a recitalist, having launched his solo recital series, The Art of the Recital, in 2016, with a mission to bring the great masterpieces of the solo violin repertoire back into our regular concert-going experience.

He is an active chamber musician, having performed with the New England Bach Festival at Marlboro, A Far Cry, Camerata New England, Music at Eden’s Edge, and Manchester Summer Chamber Music. As an orchestral musician, he has served as associate concertmaster of the Cape Cod Symphony and first violinist of the Boston Philharmonic, as well as at the Monadnock Festival. First appearing as soloist with orchestra at age 11, Joshua has performed as soloist with the Merrimack Valley Philharmonic, the Bach Consort, Manchester Summer Chamber Music, the Orchestra on the Hill, and the Wakefield Choral Society, performing concerti and solo works by Brahms, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Sarasate, Mozart, Bach, Haydn, Vivaldi, and John Williams.

His teachers include some of the legendary figures of classical violin playing. He owes his greatest gratitude to Michael Frischenschlager, former concertmaster of the Vienna Philharmonic, European soloist, and president of the Fritz Kreisler International Violin Competition, as well as Nicholas Kitchen of the Borromeo String Quartet, Marylou Churchill of the Boston Symphony, Syoko Aki of Yale University, Lynn Chang, Tymur Melnyk, Maria Benotti, and Trudy Larson.

Eliko Akahori has appeared as a chamber musician and collaborative pianist throughout the United States, Europe and Asia. Recent performances include a live broadcast of Brahms' Clarinet Trio on WGBH radio, and a series of recitals with Vienna Philharmonic principal flutist, Karl-Heinz Schütz. She received the first prize, Coleman-Barstow Award in the 57th Coleman Chamber Ensemble Competition. She has collaborated with members of the Berlin Philharmonic, the Chicago, Montreal, Boston and San Francisco Symphony Orchestras, and many others. She's performed in festivals in Canada, Maine and Japan. She serves on the faculty of Wellesley College, where she is also the director of the music performance program.

Fish On Andover! 2019: Fly Fishing in the Lowell Canals, Angling our First Urban National Park
6:00 PM - 8:45 PM

Fishing videos from 6:00-7:00pm. Seminar starts at 7:00pm. Weekly door prizes!

Geoff Klane had fished a few times before he graduated from Champlain College in Vermont, where he studied digital filmmaking. Once he moved to Lowell and saw the canal system there, he picked up a fly rod to see what the city, and New England had to offer. Now, whether it's freshwater for carp, bass, or trout, or going to the ocean for striper, false albacore, or anything else that swims, Geoff loves to chase it with a fly rod in hand. In his program, he will focus on exploring what is necessary and what one will experience if they go fishing, or on a guided trip with him in Lowell. He will discuss tackle requirements, fly selection, what sorts of fish you will find, and must visit spots in the city. You can check out Geoff's work on brackishflies.com, on his @Brackishflies, on blogflyfish.com, and reviews from happy customers on the Brackish Flies Facebook page.

Fish On Andover! 2019: Freshwater Surfcasting
6:00 PM - 8:45 PM

Fishing videos from 6:00-7:00pm. Seminar starts at 7:00pm. Weekly door prizes!

This seminar covers the fresh water species that you can target from terra firma using surfcasting knowledge and techniques. When you are waiting for the tide to turn, why not fish the nearby pond, lake, or river? The strikes by freshwater fish can be absolutely explosive! You will learn species specific techniques and spots that will catch you more fish.

Julio Silva is an all species, all methods angler. He fishes for anything that swims via shore, boat, kayak, and skishing. He has been blogging for 9 years and delivering fishy seminars for 7 years. He was the president of the Plum Island Surfcasters for 4 years. He has combined his science and technology background to create a fishing journal app that allows anglers to manage trips, fish, spots, and gear in an integrated way to identify patterns. He has rods like his wife has shoes. Fishing is his mistress. During his seminars, he answers all questions without secrecy.

Film Screening: Harvest of Empire: The Untold Story of Latinos in America
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

A facilitated discussion will follow the screening, led by Dr. Robert Forrant, Professor of History at UMass Lowell.

Harvest of Empire is a powerful documentary, based on the book by Juan González, that exposes the direct connection between the long history of U.S. intervention in Latin America and the immigration crisis we face today.  From the wars for territorial expansion that gave the U.S. control of Puerto Rico, Cuba and more than half of Mexico, to the covert operations that imposed oppressive military regimes in the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Nicaragua and El Salvador, the film unveils a moving human story that is largely unknown to the great majority of citizens in the U.S.  “We are all Americans of the New World, and our most dangerous enemies are not each other, but the great wall of ignorance between us.” – Juan González, Harvest of Empire

Dr. Forrant teaches courses on global labor issues, labor history, immigration, and international development in the History Department at UMass Lowell.

A Saint Patrick's Celebration: Songs and Stories with Kate Chadbourne
2:30 PM - 4:00 PM

Join singer, harper, and storyteller Kate Chadbourne for a Saint Patrick’s celebration of all things Irish.  Come for merriment and mischief, to learn a little Irish language, and to sing, listen, and laugh. Accompanied by the sounds of Kate’s beautiful big harp, the Irish flute, and the tin whistle, we’ll raise our hearts and voices – and maybe even the roof!

About the performer

Kate Chadbourne is an award-winning songwriter and poet, a scholar and teacher of Irish language and folklore with a PhD from Harvard, and a beloved performer at venues throughout New England.  She has been honored as a “tradition bearer” in the Revels Salon series and in the Gaelic Roots Concert Series at Boston College, and her music has been featured on NPR’s programs, “Cartalk” and “All Songs Considered.”  She has released four solo CD’s, three collections of poetry, and has collaborated on recordings and live performances with Tim Janis, Lauren Passarelli, The Chanticleers, The Celtic Kates, and many others. Named as one of “The Most Fascinating People” in Central Massachusetts by the Sentinel and Enterprise Newspaper, Kate is also the founder of The Bardic Academy, a school for writers, musicians, singers, and young scholars. She brings to her audiences the sounds of the harp, piano, tin whistle, Irish flute, and melodeon, a deep love and knowledge of traditional Irish story, a warm and welcoming presence, and a voice often described as “the voice of an angel.”
