Professor John Marzluff: Gifts of the Crow
1:00 PM - 2:30 PM

Crows are mischievous, playful, social, and passionate. They have brains that are huge for their body size and exhibit an avian kind of eloquence. They mate for life and associate with relatives and neighbors for years. And because they often live near people—in our gardens, parks, and cities—they are also keenly aware of our peculiarities, staying away from and even scolding anyone who threatens or harms them and quickly learning to recognize and approach those who care for and feed them, even giving them numerous, oddly touching gifts in return. The ongoing connection between humans and crows—a cultural co-evolution—has shaped both species for millions of years. And the characteristics of crows that allow this symbiotic relationship are language, delinquency, frolic, passion, wrath, risk-taking, and awareness—seven traits that humans find strangely familiar.

With his extraordinary research on the intelligence and startling abilities of corvids—crows, ravens, and jays—scientist John Marzluff tells amazing stories of these brilliant birds in Gifts of the Crow, shining a light on their fascinating characteristics and behaviors.

John Marzluff is James W. Ridgeway Professor of Wildlife Science at the University of Washington. His graduate (Northern Arizona University) and initial post-doctoral (University of Vermont) research focused on the social behavior and ecology of jays and ravens.  He was especially interested in communication, social organization, and foraging behavior (e.g., The Pinyon Jay, 1992, Academic Press). His current research brings this behavioral approach to pressing conservation issues including raptor management, management of pest species, and assessment of nest predation.  His book, In the Company of Crows and Ravens(with Tony Angell, 2005 Yale U. Press) blends biology, conservation, and anthropology to suggest that human and crow cultures have co-evolved. He is currently a member of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Recovery Team for the critically endangered Mariana Crow, a former member of the Washington Biodiversity Council, and a Fellow of the American Ornithologist's Union.

Martin Culpepper: Owls of New England
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Martin Culpepper, a sixteen-year-old aspiring wildlife photographer, will give a talk about the owls of New England. Martin has always enjoyed nature, and began photographing outdoors at age 12. He spends 50-60 hours each month looking for wildlife to photograph. He's traveled to Alaska, Wyoming, and most recently to northern Minnesota, to capture photographs of wildlife there. When he's not out with his camera, he enjoys being a Boy Scout, and camping, hiking, and fishing. He was a finalist in the National Geographic Student Expeditions 2019 photo contest.

His photographs will be on display at the library for the month of June. Find him on Facebook and Instagram.

An Evening with Author Doug V.B. Goudie
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Author Doug 'V.B.' Goudie will talk about his new book, A Frost in Hell: The True Story of the Petersham Butcher of 1875. July 4th, 1875. While most people were planning celebrations, one man had another idea - murder. And this was no ordinary murder. What Samuel J. Frost did on July 4th was outrageous, and it was only the beginning. He would become a national sensation, but not so much because of his crime. Instead, it was what he did AFTER the murder that stunned the country. His became the "trial of the year" in Massachusetts, and it would not disappoint. It contained a first-of-its-kind appeal, and it resulted in a last-of-its-kind punishment. And in between, his wife would face a decision that would have been easy to make in 2018, but was anything but in 1875. She would be harshly criticized by some for what she decided. While the murder was outrageous and the trial was fascinating, it was the punishment that was the most shocking. It would lead many in Massachusetts to ask, "what are we doing exactly?" This book tells the story of a nondescript farmer from a 'never-heard-of-it' town who captivated Massachusetts for all of the wrong reasons. The story is as juicy today as it was in 1875, and it is told by an author who grew up in that 'never-heard-of-it' town.

Doug 'V.B.' Goudie has spent much of his career in talk radio in Boston, first as a sidekick on the Howier Carr Show. His first book, ACK in Ashes, told the story of Nantucket's Great Fire of 1846. He grew up in Petersham and now lives in Boxford with his wife and four children.

American History with Don Robb: The Gilded Age
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Historians and economists often compare the "Gilded Age" (1876 - 1900) to the Nineteen Twenties, and present day-America!

This series, led by Don Robb, will explore how the Gilded Age changed America: powerful industrial corporations, a huge influx of immigrants, the growth of great cities, party politics as tense as those of today and the reactions of the American people, rich and poor, to a changing society.

Native Wild Edibles with Russ Cohen
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Join Russ Cohen, expert forager and author of Wild Plants I Have Known…and Eaten, for a 60-minute slide show featuring at least two dozen species of native edible wild plants suitable for adding to your own landscape, or nibbling on as you encounter them in other locales.  Keys to the identification of each species will be provided, along with edible portion(s), season(s) of availability and preparation method(s), along with guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging.  Russ will also include a few details regarding some native edible plants he has grown successfully from seed, and the partnerships he has made with conservation groups and others to add edible native plants to their landscapes. Last but not least, Russ will accompany his talk with handouts.

There’s an increasing interest among homeowners, property managers and others to utilize more native species in their landscaping, thanks to books like Doug Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home, which extol the virtues of native plants over exotic ornamentals for attracting and sustaining beneficial insects. For some, this may be insufficient motivation to “go native,” but knowing that many native species are edible may provide the additional incentive you need to add native species to your yard.  Juneberries (Amelanchier spp.), for example, are equally edible by animals (songbirds, e.g.) and people alike. The taste of the ripe fruit is like a cross between cherries and almonds (they’re all related species in the Rose family).

AVIS will sponsor a wild edible walk with Russ on Wednesday, June 19 from 6:00-8:00pm at an AVIS reservation.

Haskell Small: Pianist & Composer
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Pianist and composer, Haskell Small will perform a program featuring his new composition, "A Haunted Child," along with works by Mozart, Chopin and others.

The composer and pianist has been praised for the exquisite blend of sound and silence in his compositions and for his prodigious technique and subtle touch at the keyboard. His discography of over a dozen recordings and his frequent national and international tours have firmly established his artistic reputation around the world.

Highlights of his international performance career include engagements at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center and Spoleto USA. His acclaimed artistry has spread further through his active YouTube channel and other videos, which have received millions of views. In addition to his online videos, Small was featured on the nationally-broadcast PBS special “A Celebration of the Piano.”

Over the course of his career, his contemplative nature has drawn him to music that seeks a spiritual quietude that approaches silence. His ongoing series of compositions, performances and recordings, "Journeys in Silence," reflects this interest. He regularly tours the United States, Europe and Japan, programming his own compositions as well as works by other composers that share this aesthetic, performing in monasteries, churches and galleries as well as more conventional concert venues.

Small has received commissions from the Washington Ballet, Three Rivers Piano Competition, Georgetown Symphony and Paul Hill Chorale, among others. His discography includes recordings of his own compositions as well as the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach, Musica Callada by Federico Mompou and Gershwin in Black and White (a collection of piano transcriptions) on the MSR, Naxos, Centaur and 4Tay labels.

Understanding Our Universe
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

It's all bigger than you can imagine.

Space-time is big, both in size, the number of objects (exoplanets, stars, galaxies, etc) in it, and its 13.8 billion year age. Our daily lives don't prepare us to comprehend these astronomical quantities. We can see about 5000 stars from a non-light polluted area. A small amateur telescope will show us millions of objects, and professional telescopes have cataloged billions of objects. This presentation will offer some perspective on what can be seen with a telescope and how we categorize them in ways to improve our understanding of our universe.

About the presenter:

Brewster LaMacchia is an Andover resident and the public outreach coordinator for the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club. He's organized events that have enabled thousands of people over the last 10 years to look through volunteer's telescopes to see everything from the rings of Saturn to galaxies millions of light years away. He will facilitate the field trip to Mendel Observatory at Merrimack College on Tuesday, July 23rd.

Field Trip to Mendel Observatory at Merrimack College
8:30 PM - 10:00 PM

Observe the night sky through the telescope at Merrimack College's Mendel Observatory. The telescope will be trained on an object and everyone in the group will have a chance to look through the eyepiece. The process will be repeated on as many objects as time allows.

Rain or extreme heat cancels the event, because the dome can get very hot in the summer.

Meet in the lobby area near the stairs/elevator on the 3rd floor of the Mendel Science Center at Merrimack College. Space is limited to 15 people and the event is suitable for children ages 6 & up, accompanied by an adult. The evening will be facilitated by Brewster LaMacchia of the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club.

The Mendel Observatory at Merrimack College is open to the public on Wednesday evenings, and the North Shore Amateur Astronomy Club (NSAAC) posts updates on their Facebook page.

An Evening with Author Tara Masih
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Award-winning author, Tara Masih, will share her debut YA novel, My Real Name is Hanna, which won a Florida Book Award and a Skipping Stones Honor Award and is being translated into Slovak. Door prizes will include two literary goodie bags.

Hanna Slivka is on the cusp of fourteen when Hitler’s army crosses the border into Soviet-occupied Ukraine. Soon, the Gestapo closes in, determined to make the shtetele she lives in “free of Jews.” Until the German occupation, Hanna spent her time exploring Kwasova with her younger siblings, admiring the drawings of the handsome Leon Stadnick, and helping her neighbor dye decorative pysanky eggs. But now she, Leon, and their families are forced to flee and hide in the forest outside their shtetele—and then in the dark caves beneath the rolling meadows, rumored to harbor evil spirits. Underground, they battle sickness and starvation, while the hunt continues above. When Hanna’s father disappears, suddenly it’s up to Hanna to find him—and to find a way to keep the rest of her family, and friends, alive.

Sparse, resonant, and lyrical, weaving in tales of Jewish and Ukrainian folklore, My Real Name Is Hanna celebrates the sustaining bonds of family, the beauty of a helping hand, and the tenacity of the human spirit. Inspired by real Holocaust events, this poignant debut novel is a powerful coming-of-age story that will resonate with fans of The Book Thief and Between Shades of Gray.

Tara Lynn Masih has won multiple book awards in her role as editor of The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Writing Flash Fiction and The Chalk Circle: Intercultural Prizewinning Essays. She is also author of Where the Dog Star Never Glows: Stories and Founding Series Editor for The Best Small Fictions annual anthology. Her award-winning fiction, poetry, and prose has been heavily anthologized. She grew up on Long Island's north shore, in the small harbor town of East Northport. After graduating from C.W. Post College, she moved to Boston and earned an MA in Writing and Publishing from Emerson College, where she taught freshman composition and grammar and tutored students with writing problems. She has worked as a publisher's assistant to Pym-Randall Press; as an assistant editor to STORIES literary magazine; as an editorial assistant at Little, Brown's college division; and as a book editor at Bedford Books/St. Martin's Press, and was a freelance book packager, copyeditor, and proofreader for such companies as Houghton Mifflin, Ballantine Books, and Harvard University Press for over 30 years. Tara has published fiction, poetry, essays, profiles, and articles (ConfrontationThe Caribbean WriterHayden's Ferry ReviewThe Los Angeles ReviewPleiadesFive PointsNatural Bridge), and her essays have been read on NPR.

I Found My Village! Now What?
7:00 PM - 8:30 PM

Locating Vital Records in Poland Using Online Resources

Finding vital records for one's family in Poland is a critical step in exploring our Polish ancestry, but can sometimes be confusing. After a brief overview of the Polish partitions to introduce beginners to the history and geography of Poland, Julie Roberts Szczepankiewicz will illustrate the use of church records, passenger manifests, naturalization records, and other documents from U.S. sources, to determine one's ancestral village accurately. She’ll suggest resources and strategies to help you decipher misspelled place names, and discuss the next steps in your research: determining the parish and civil registry office using gazetteers, and obtaining birth, marriage and death records. Julie will rely heavily on online sources throughout her presentation, and show how you can trace your Polish ancestry without having to cross the ocean.
