One-Time Rebroadcast of Edward Steichen & WWII Navy Photography Presentation by Gary Saretzky (available via HERE)
After working with Alfred Stieglitz in the early 1900s to establish photography as an art form, Edward Steichen (1879–1973) in the 1920s and 1930s became a premier fashion photographer and then comfortably retired to raise flowers on his large Connecticut estate. When World War II started, Steichen became the oldest commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy and eventually was promoted to become the head of all Navy photography. After the war, Steichen was appointed Director of Photography for the Museum of Modern Art, New York, where he curated numerous exhibitions, including The Family of Man, seen by millions around the world. This lecture focuses on his WWII years, when he put together a team of exceptional photographers to document the Navy’s role in the war, especially in the Pacific, and personally took some of the pictures published in magazines, books, and his friend Tom Maloney’s U.S. Camera Annual.
About the Speaker: Gary D. Saretzky, archivist, educator, and photographer, worked as an archivist for more than fifty years at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Educational Testing Service, and the Monmouth County Archives, where he was County Archivist from 1994 to 2019. A member of the Photographic Materials Group of the American Institute for Conservation, Saretzky taught the history of photography at Mercer County Community College, 1977-2012, and served as coordinator of the Public History Internship Program for the Rutgers University History Department, 1994-2016. He has published more than 100 articles and reviews on the history of photography, photographic conservation, and other topics, including “Nineteenth-Century New Jersey Photographers,” in the journal, New Jersey History, Fall/Winter 2004, a revised version of which is available at http://saretzky.com.

Join us for a Virtual Bereavement Group meeting at 6:45 pm on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.
When you experience the loss of a loved one, navigating through the maze of emotion, making ordinary decisions, and finding a new rhythm to every day can be stressful and overwhelming. These workshops, led by Beth Stamp, support facilitator, may provide an opportunity to share experiences, feelings, and new ideas for moving forward.

About the presenter: Greg Caggiano is a published author, historian, lecturer, and consultant. He holds a degree in history from New Jersey City University and NJ State teaching certifications in history and elementary education. Since 2014, Greg has worked as an instructor for Brookdale Community College in their Lifelong Learning department and as a field guide for their Ocean Institute on Sandy Hook, which focuses on local marine life, maritime history, and the history of the US Military’s presence at Fort Hancock. In his spare time, he has served on the Board of Directors of two museums: the Proprietary House in Perth Amboy, and most recently the Atlantic Highlands Historical Society, housed at the Strauss Mansion Museum. A firm believer in volunteering and giving back to the community, he has helped fundraise tens of thousands of dollars for historic preservation over the years.
