Celebrate Juneteenth with an invigorating conversation with award-winning author Sadeqa Johnson as she talks about her brand new novel, The House of Eve!
In The House of Eve, Fifteen-year-old Ruby Pearsall is on track to becoming the first in her family to attend college, in spite of having a mother more interested in keeping a man than raising her daughter. But a taboo love affair threatens to pull her back down into the poverty and desperation that has been passed onto her like a birthright.
Eleanor Quarles arrived in Washington DC with ambition and secrets. When she meets the handsome William Pride at Howard University, they fall madly in love. But William hails from one of DC’s elite wealthy Black families, and his parents don’t just let anyone into their fold. Eleanor hopes that a baby will make her finally feel at home in William’s family and grant her the life she’s been searching for, but having a baby—and fitting in—is easier said than done.
The lives of these two women collide in the most unexpected way as they both face life altering decisions. The House of Eve is a fast-paced, harrowing story that hinges on what it means to be a woman and a mother, and how much one is willing to sacrifice to achieve her greatest goal.

June is New Jersey's Month of the Horse! Celebrate with an exciting virtual encore chat with award winning novelist, Geraldine Brooks in conversation about her most recent New York Times Bestselling novel Horse.
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.
New York City, 1954. Martha Jackson, a gallery owner celebrated for taking risks on edgy contemporary painters, becomes obsessed with a nineteenth-century equestrian oil painting of mysterious provenance.
Washington, DC, 2019. Jess, a Smithsonian scientist from Australia, and Theo, a Nigerian-American art historian, find themselves unexpectedly connected through their shared interest in the horse--one studying the stallion's bones for clues to his power and endurance, the other uncovering the lost history of the unsung Black horsemen who were critical to his racing success. Based on the remarkable true story of the record-breaking thoroughbred Lexington, Horse is a novel of art and science, love and obsession, and our unfinished reckoning with racism.

Missed it the first time? View a virtual chat with author Bonnie Garmus as she discusses her debut New York Times bestselling novel Lessons in Chemistry.
Lessons in Chemistry is set in 1960s California and features the singular voice of Chemist Elizabeth Zott, a scientist whose career takes an unexpected detour. Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it's the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel-prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with--of all things--her mind. True chemistry results.
But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America's most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth's unusual approach to cooking ("combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride") proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn't just teaching women to cook. She's daring them to change the status quo.

Rebroadcast of The Jews from Denmark in Theresienstadt, 1943-1945
Join us for a premiere rebroadcast of a popular recent program! Available to view via Library Website or HERE. Registration is not needed.
For Jewish American Heritage Month, renowned Danish Scholar Dr. Therkel Straede presented a live, virtual program tracing the steps of the 470 Jewish men and women – children, adults, and elderly – who were sent to Theresienstadt, near Prague, and experienced the terror and hardship of the Holocaust in a horrible Nazi ghetto. Fifty-three did not survive. The www.danskejoederitheresienstadt.org website uses memoirs and video-interviews to document their ghetto experience, fears, but also hopes and "free spaces" in a world of oppression. Dr. Straede demonstrated the diversity of their experience and reflections.
About the Presenter: Dr. Straede joined us from University of Southern Denmark, where he is a Professor of Contemporary History. Focusing most of his work and studies on the Holocaust, he is the founding member of the Danish National Committee for the Counseling of Victims of Nazi German Persecution, Forced Labor and Genocide; a Fulbright visiting researcher at Georgetown University at the Center for German and European Studies, an associate scholar of the Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum; Dr. Straede has created a series of articles for U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum's Encyclopedia of Nazi Camp.

View a conversation with historical fiction writer Kate Quinn as she discusses her newest release, The Diamond Eye, and her other works. Quinn is the author of several New York Times bestsellers, including The Alice Network, The Huntress, and The Rose Code.
In 1937 in the snowbound city of Kiev (now known as Kyiv), wry and bookish history student Mila Pavlichenko organizes her life around her library job and her young son - but Hitler's invasion of Ukraine and Russia sends her on a different path. Given a rifle and sent to join the fight, Mila must forge herself from studious young woman to deadly sniper - a lethal hunter of Nazis known as Lady Death. When news of her three hundredth kill makes her a national heroine, Mila finds herself torn from the bloody battlefields of the eastern front and sent to America on a goodwill tour.
Still reeling from war wounds and devastated by loss, Mila finds herself isolated and lonely in the glittering world of Washington, DC - until an unexpected friendship with First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt and an even more unexpected connection with a silent fellow sniper offer the possibility of happiness. But when an old enemy from Mila's past joins forces with a deadly new foe lurking in the shadows, Lady Death finds herself battling her own demons, and enemy bullets, in the deadliest duel of her life.

Join us for an awe-inspiring chat with New York Times bestselling author Charles Soule as he talks about his newest book, The Endless Vessel, which explores the way we’re all connected—and what can happen when we lose our capacity for joy.
The Endless Vessel transports us to the near future, in a world similar to ours, where a “depression plague” known as “The Grey” haunts the population. No one can predict whom it will afflict or how, but once infected, there’s no coming back. A young Hong Kong-based scientist, Lily Barnes, is trying to maintain her inner light in an increasingly dark world. The human race is dwindling, and the number of people fighting to push forward is shrinking. One day, Lily discovers something that seems to be addressed to her directly, calling to her, asking her to follow a path without knowing its end. She leaves her life behind and sets out through time and space to find out. Is this the Endless Vessel that leads to happiness? Soule artfully channels history, science, and drama to create a story for the ages—a story of hope and love, and possibility.

Missed it the first time? Check out a conversation with New York Times Bestselling author Liz Moore as she discusses her international bestseller, Long Bright River, and her other works.
The novel takes place in Philadelphia, where Moore has lived for a decade. She traces the story of two sisters estranged from each other but bonded by their choices. Mickey is a cop, and Kacey lives on the streets in the vice of addiction. When Kacey disappears, Mickey panics over her sister’s safety—obsessed with finding the culprit and her sister before it’s too late.
Drawing on deeply personal volunteer work, Liz Moore spins a story that is both graphically honest and dignified. Long Bright River puts a very human face on the effect that addiction can have on generations of families and communities.

In his book Chatter: The Voice in Our Head, Why It Matters, and How to Harness It, the million-dollar question that Ethan Kross seeks to answer is how can we transform our self-saboteur into an internal life coach that will buoy us up and help us expand our potential?
A world-class psychological scientist, Kross has written one of modern history's most definitive guides to mastering self-talk. In his national best-seller Chatter, he uses a blend of cutting-edge science (from his own lab) and real-world case studies to help us harness the power of our inner voice. The tools are all around us—from the objects we surround ourselves with to our relationships with others, the physical spaces we inhabit, and the digital worlds we interact in. This talk is a lively exploration of how we can use those tools to make our inner voice work in our favor, and it answers some valuable questions along the way. An expert storyteller, Kross brings his research to life in a way that is fascinating, accessible, and immediately applicable to our daily lives.

Missed it the first time? View an online conversation with New York Times bestselling author of The Gilded Ones Series in a discussion about her second installment in the series, The Merciless Ones.
In Forna’s first New York Times Bestselling book, The Gilded Ones, readers are introduced to sixteen-year-old Deka, who lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs. But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.
Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.
Knowing the dangers that lie ahead yet yearning for acceptance, Deka decides to leave the only life she’s ever known. Uncovering mysteries surrounding herself and the kingdom all along the way.
The second thrilling installment, The Merciless Ones, picks up six months since Deka freed the goddesses in the ancient kingdom of Otera and discovered who she really is… but war is waging across the kingdom, and the real battle has only just begun. For there is a dark force growing in Otera—a merciless power that Deka and her army must stop.
Yet hidden secrets threaten to destroy everything Deka has known. And with her own gifts changing, Deka must discover if she holds the key to saving Otera… or if she might be its greatest threat.

Join us for a chat with award-winning writer Erika Sánchez about her utterly original, moving, and disarmingly funny memoir-in-essays Crying in the Bathroom.
Growing up as the daughter of Mexican immigrants in Chicago in the nineties, Erika Sánchez was a self-described pariah, misfit, and disappointment—a foul-mouthed, melancholic rabble-rouser who painted her nails black but also loved comedy, often laughing so hard with her friends that she had to leave her school classroom. Twenty-five years later, she’s now an award-winning novelist, poet, and essayist, but she’s still got an irrepressible laugh, an acerbic wit, and singular powers of perception about the world around her. In these essays, Sánchez writes about everything from sex to white feminism to debilitating depression, revealing an interior life rich with ideas, self-awareness, and perception. Raunchy, insightful, unapologetic, and brutally honest, Crying in the Bathroom is Sánchez's best—a book that will make you feel that post-confessional high that comes from talking for hours with your best friend.

It is now being made into a film directed by America Ferrera. Most recently, Sánchez published a critically acclaimed memoir-in-essays titled Crying in the Bathroom with Viking Books. Sánchez was a Fulbright Scholar, a 2015 Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent fellow from the Poetry Foundation, a 2017-2019 Princeton Arts Fellow, a 2018 recipient of the 21st Century Award from the Chicago Public Library Foundation, and a 2019 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.
