Join us for an enlightening hour online with highly-acclaimed Kate Beaton, the New York Times bestselling author of Hark! A Vagrant! And Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands.
Her first full-length graphic narrative follows Beaton as she heads out west to take advantage of Alberta’s oil rush, after struggling to find work in her hometown of Mabou, Nova Scotia. After arriving in Fort McMurray, Beaton finds work in the lucrative camps owned and operated by the world’s largest oil companies. Being one of the few women among thousands of men, the culture shock is palpable. She encounters the harsh reality of life in the oil sands where trauma is an everyday occurrence yet never discussed. Beaton’s natural cartooning prowess is on full display as she draws colossal machinery and mammoth vehicles set against a sublime Albertan backdrop of wildlife, Northern Lights, and Rocky Mountains. Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands is more than a memoir, it’s also an untold story of Canada.

About the Author: Kate Beaton was born and raised in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. After graduating from Mount Allison University with a double degree in History and Anthropology, she moved to Alberta in search of work that would allow her to pay down her student loans. During the years she spent out West, Beaton began creating webcomics under the name Hark! A Vagrant, quickly drawing a substantial following around the world. The collections of her landmark strip Hark! A Vagrant and Step Aside, Pops each spent several months on the New York Times graphic novel bestseller list, as well as appearing on best of the year lists from Time, The Washington Post, Vulture, NPR Books, and winning the Eisner, Ignatz, Harvey, and Doug Wright Awards. She has also published the picture books King Baby and The Princess and the Pony. Beaton lives in Cape Breton with her family.
Check out her books in our collection here.

There are many different genres of photography, such as portrait, landscape, wildlife, sports, news, and fashion among others. Each of these genres requires different techniques and offers their own unique challenges. It is important to learn the proper use of light and composition to create visually appealing and meaningful images.
Each session is designed for individuals of all ages and is aimed at expanding their horizon in the arts. This is just part one of the series and the next three sessions will take place on:
Wednesday, May 10, 2023 - Settings and Options (5:00 pm - 6:00 pm)
Wednesday, May 17, 2023 - Getting to Know Your Camera (5:00 pm - 6:00 pm)
Wednesday, May 24, 2023 - Great Photo, Now What? (5:00 pm - 6:00 pm)
About the Photographer: Out of college, Freddy Clark started working in radio as an on-air DJ and production director, moving between a couple of rock stations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. After a decade working full time in radio, he felt it was time for a change, and photography got in his blood when his daughter was born. He dabbled in a lot of different photography pursuits – portraits, street, and landscapes. Because he was into craft beer, one rainy day he started photographing some bottles in his garage and the way forward was clear to him. Now he works for beverage brands, bars and restaurants. He’s taught photography workshops for Princeton Photo Workshops, Canon, and independently.

Join us virtually to discuss Academy Award Nominee, Jena Friedman’s debut essay collection, Not Funny, as she takes on the third rails of modern life with a bold and subversive style, in essays that explore cancel culture, sexism, work, celebrity worship, and more.
In a moment where so many of us could use a breather as we struggle to get by, Jena applies her unique gifts to pull a laugh from things deemed too raw, too precious, and too scary to joke about. She shares her stories of taking on those who told her she was too brash, too edgy, and too “unlikable” to make it. She deftly dissects how we get coerced into silence on the issues that matter most, until they’ve gone too far afield to be turned back around again. And she shares her struggles to make it (-ish) in a world that, more often than not, would rather tune out than listen to a woman confronting the indignities we’ve been told to bear.

For American Jewish Heritage Month, join us as renowned Danish Scholar Dr. Therkel Straede presents a live, virtual program tracing the steps of the 470 Jewish men and women – children, adults, and elderly – who were sent to Theresienstadt, near Prague, and experienced the terror and hardship of the Holocaust in a horrible Nazi ghetto. Fifty-three did not survive. The www.danskejoederitheresienstadt.org website uses memoirs and video-interviews to document their ghetto experience, fears, but also hopes and "free spaces" in a world of oppression. Dr. Straede will demonstrate the diversity of their experience and reflections.
About the Presenter: Dr. Straede will join us from University of Southern Denmark, where he is a Professor of Contemporary History. Focusing most of his work and studies on the Holocaust, he is the founding member of the Danish National Comittee for the Counseling of Victims of Nazi German Persecution, Forced Labor and Genocide; a Fulbright visiting researcher at Georgetown University at the Center for German and European Studies, an associate scholar of th eCenter for Advanced holocaust Studies at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum; Dr. Straede has created a series of articles for US Holocaust Memorial Museeum's Encyclopedia of Nazi Camp.

When sixteen-year-old Georgia Avis discovers the dead body of thirteen-year-old Ashley James, she teams up with Ashley's older sister, Nora, to find and bring the killer to justice before he strikes again. But their investigation throws Georgia into a world of unimaginable privilege and wealth, without conscience or consequence, and as Ashley’s killer closes in, Georgia will discover when money, power and beauty rule, it might not be a matter of who is guilty—but who is guiltiest. A spiritual successor to the 2018 breakout hit, Sadie, I'm the Girl is a masterfully written, bold, and unflinching account of how one young woman feels in her body as she struggles to navigate a deadly and predatory power structure while asking readers one question: if this is the way the world is, do you accept it?

Rebroadcast of Subway Art of NYC: Presentation by Oscar Israelowitz
Join us for a one-time rebroadcast of popular past programs! Available via Library Website or HERE. Registration not needed.
This exciting tour will take us to New York City’s glorious subway stations, some of which contain stained-glass skylights, brass chandeliers and Guastavino tile arches. Other stations feature ornate terra-cotta art work designed as early as 1904. Some stations highlight contemporary sculptural designs of little brass people sitting on benches or decorative mosaic tiles designed in the early 20th century. We conclude our tour with a visit to an inclined elevator near the High Line and Jacob Javits Center at the Hudson Yards.
About the historian: Oscar Israelowitz was born in Brussels, Belgium. He is an architect, licensed New York City tour guide, and author of over 75 books. He has given private tours for Leon Uris, author of Exodus, and has exhibited his photographs at the Whitney Museum of American Art. He has been serving the New York metropolitan community since 1973.

The Basics of Photography for Beginners (Register ONCE and you will be registered for ALL FOUR classes)
Presented by Photographer Freddy Clark
Join us for a virtual four-part series featuring Photography Freddy Clark.
Part 4: Great Photo, Now What?
Learn about moving your photos off your camera and editing them. Get a glimpse into histograms and why they are important tools in photography. A good photograph can speak volumes and have a powerful impact.
Each session is designed for individuals of all ages and is aimed at expanding their horizon in the arts. This is the final part of the series.
This program is free and available to attend via Zoom. Please register below! Programs are offered in partnership with WOS Workforce Opportunity Services, a leading non-profit organization connecting individuals from underserved populations with transformative career opportunities.
