This exhibition is a photographic tribute to New Jersey's World War I sculptural monuments that will each have their respective 100th anniversary this decade. The exhibit includes over 25 photographs of monuments throughout New Jersey, including the Soldiers Memorial in Kearny, Two Doughboys Monument in Paterson, America Triumphant in Jersey City, Memorial Cenotaph in Morristown, and Liberty in Distress in Atlantic City, among many others.
After WWI, towns and cities of New Jersey dedicated several hundred monuments to citizens who served and memorials to those who lost their lives during the conflict. Many are dedicated bronze plaques, rough or finished stone monuments, stained glass windows, church bells, parks, libraries and other buildings. Some Garden State communities chose to erect custom designed monuments that included original sculptural works by prominent artists of the day. This exhibit features many of those.
Historian Erik Burro, an authority on monuments of New Jersey, has studied public and private memorials throughout the Garden State and adjoining states. His photo exhibition, Legacy of Remembrance, has been featured at public libraries and colleges within NJ. All photos were taken by Mr. Burro while conducting an onsite independent survey of Garden State war memorials. Mr. Burro has lectured on his monument research and the artists that created them at Rider, Rutgers & Camden County colleges.
