Encore Presentation: Pysanky, A Demonstration of the Ancient Art of Egg Decorating
6:30 PM

Rebroadcast presentation will be viewable on a one-time basis via  on Library Website or here

Ukrainian eggs or ‘Pysanky’ are decorated using beeswax and dyes that are applied in layers. Viewers will learn techniques, designs, and historical significance of this process and practice.

About the Presenter: Instructor Jenny Santa Maria is a batik egg artist who lives in Farmingdale, New Jersey. Her approach to this medium is untraditional in that she explores and experiments with mathematical concepts (self similarity, tessellation, golden ratio, etc.) in her work and enjoys the therapeutic and soulful process of creating intricate designs on eggs with melted beeswax. Though associated with the spring, she practices the art year-round with wax from her own beehives and eggs from her own happy hens. Jennifer is a high school art teacher in Tinton Falls and has exhibited her decorative eggs in various settings such as Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. She has been teaching pysanky classes on the East coast for several years, from Vermont to Delaware, in artist retreat centers, libraries, art museums, galleries and private sessions in intimate spaces, keeping this ancient art alive. Viewers will receive a deeper understanding of the culture, the art, and themselves.

Permission to present a program on behalf of the Virtual Library or in Library facilities is not an endorsement by the Library. This program is protected by copyright law; recording in any manner, without written agreement from the presenter, is strictly prohibited.

Encore: Celebrating Black History: Power of African American Stories in Art of Bisa Butler
6:30 PM

Encore! Celebrating Black History: Power of African American Stories in the Art of Bisa Butler  available to view via Library website or HERE

Join us for a rebroadcast of Celebrating Black History: Power of African American Stories in the Art of Bisa Butler.

Originally presented in February of 2021, we are delighted that Historian & Cultural Activist Thelma Armstrong has approved a rebroadcast of this important story of the works and images of American fiber artist, Bisa Butler.

The original program was moderated by Andrea McPherson of the Manalapan Arts Council.

While African American artists have been telling powerful stories through their art, both in Black Culture as well as in the dominant culture, there is still a vacuum of dislocation to the pre-slavery past. In the world of art, overflowing with a myriad of artistic expressions, many wonder what else can be added to the canon to create something new, different, uniquely designed to speak to the African Diaspora? Ms. Armstrong will present how Bisa Butler found an artistic method to salve the fractures of loss and also inspire emotional depth through connectedness.

Bisa Butler is an American artist known for celebrating Black life through her portraits and designs. Her art has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum of American History, the Epcot Center, and the National Underground Railroad Center, to name a few.

About the Presenter: Thelma Armstrong is a Scholar and Cultural Activist who is passionate about the "lived lives" of members of diverse communities. She received her MA in Historical Studies in 2008. Eighteenth Century Women's History became her focus, with a specific emphasis on women of color.

About the Moderator: Andrea McPherson is the Senior Manager - Enterprise Portfolio Management and Governance - Next Evolution of Work at TD Bank, the co-creator of the Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School steel drum band The Manala-PANS, and a member of the Manalapan Arts Council.

Historically Speaking: A Virtual Lecture with Bernadette Rogoff
7:00 PM

Julia's Wardrobe Presented by Bernadette Rogoff

Part of Historically Speaking, a Virtual Lecture Series from Monmouth County Historical Association, Co-Sponsored by the Monmouth County Library

In 1868, Julia Norton Hartshorne ordered a brand new wardrobe to take advantage of the latest style trends. Her husband, Benjamin Minturn Hartshorne, was born and raised in Monmouth County and ran a successful steamboat company along the West Coast. The couple and their three children traveled from their home in San Francisco for an extended summer visit with Benjamin's family in Middletown. Upon returning, Julia fell ill and died in February 1869. Benjamin packed away all of Julia's things and returned with his children to Monmouth County. Through the generosity of Hartshorne family descendants, Julia's wardrobe is now part of the Association's historic textile collection. Director of Collections Bernadette Rogoff will introduce you to Julia and explore her style and personality with an enjoyable virtual fashion show through Julia's Wardrobe.

This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below to receive emailed information on how to access the program.

Pysanky, A Demonstration of Ancient Art of Egg Decorating: A Virtual Program
7:00 PM

Pysanky, The Ancient Art of Egg Decorating: A Virtual Program

Presented by Jenny Santa Maria

Ukrainian eggs or ‘Pysanky’ are decorated using beeswax and dyes that are applied in layers. Participants will learn techniques, designs, and historical significance of this process and practice.

Instructor Jenny Santa Maria is a batik egg artist who lives in Farmingdale, New Jersey. Jennifer is a high school art teacher in Tinton Falls and has exhibited her decorative eggs in various settings such as Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton NJ. She has been teaching pysanky classes on the East coast for several years, from Vermont to Delaware, in artist retreat centers, libraries, art museums, galleries and private sessions in intimate spaces, keeping this ancient art alive. All participants continue to leave her workshops with a deeper understanding of the culture, the art, and themselves.

This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register on the Library website’s Upcoming Events list to receive emailed information on how to access the conversation. Registration closes at noon on March 27th; Zoom access link is emailed later that afternoon.
