Ukrainian eggs or ‘Pysanky’ are decorated using beeswax and dyes that are applied in layers. Viewers will learn techniques, designs, and historical significance of this process and practice.
About the Presenter: Instructor Jenny Santa Maria is a batik egg artist who lives in Farmingdale, New Jersey. Her approach to this medium is untraditional in that she explores and experiments with mathematical concepts (self similarity, tessellation, golden ratio, etc.) in her work and enjoys the therapeutic and soulful process of creating intricate designs on eggs with melted beeswax. Though associated with the spring, she practices the art year-round with wax from her own beehives and eggs from her own happy hens. Jennifer is a high school art teacher in Tinton Falls and has exhibited her decorative eggs in various settings such as Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ. She has been teaching pysanky classes on the East coast for several years, from Vermont to Delaware, in artist retreat centers, libraries, art museums, galleries and private sessions in intimate spaces, keeping this ancient art alive. Viewers will receive a deeper understanding of the culture, the art, and themselves.

Julia's Wardrobe Presented by Bernadette Rogoff
Part of Historically Speaking, a Virtual Lecture Series from Monmouth County Historical Association, Co-Sponsored by the Monmouth County Library
In 1868, Julia Norton Hartshorne ordered a brand new wardrobe to take advantage of the latest style trends. Her husband, Benjamin Minturn Hartshorne, was born and raised in Monmouth County and ran a successful steamboat company along the West Coast. The couple and their three children traveled from their home in San Francisco for an extended summer visit with Benjamin's family in Middletown. Upon returning, Julia fell ill and died in February 1869. Benjamin packed away all of Julia's things and returned with his children to Monmouth County. Through the generosity of Hartshorne family descendants, Julia's wardrobe is now part of the Association's historic textile collection. Director of Collections Bernadette Rogoff will introduce you to Julia and explore her style and personality with an enjoyable virtual fashion show through Julia's Wardrobe.
This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register below to receive emailed information on how to access the program.

Carol Simon Levin portrays Lillian Moller Gilbreth, motion study pioneer and Cheaper by the Dozen mother of 12 -- then shares the stories of other overlooked women innovators, including many women of color. From Margaret Knight (the 19th century "Female Edison") to Hollywood superstar Hedy Lamarr, these "Mothers of Invention" changed our lives, yet their accomplishments were all too often ignored, discounted or credited to others. Join us for this fascinating and eye-opening presentation.

19th Century New Jersey Women Photographers: Exceptional Artists in a Mostly Male Profession
Live Zoom Lecture from Gary Saretzky
In the 19th century, of more than 3,000 professional photographers in New Jersey, only about 3% were women. In this slide program, the successful careers of selected women pioneer photographers active in New Jersey will be highlighted, including Charlotte Prosch in Newark, Jessie Carhart in Phillipsburg, Hannah Flanagin in Woodstown, and the renowned Amelia Van Buren & Eva Watson (later Watson-Schütze) in Atlantic City, whose work was shown at the Universal Exposition of 1900 in Paris.
About the Speaker: Gary D. Saretzky is archivist, educator, and photographer. He has worked as an archivist for more than fifty years at the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, Educational Testing Service, and the Monmouth County Archives, where he was County Archivist from 1994 to 2019. He has published more than 100 articles and reviews on the history of photography, photographic conservation, and other topics, including Nineteenth-Century New Jersey Photographers, in the journal, New Jersey History, Fall/Winter 2004, a revised version is available at http://saretzky.com.

Pysanky, The Ancient Art of Egg Decorating: A Virtual Program
Presented by Jenny Santa Maria
Ukrainian eggs or ‘Pysanky’ are decorated using beeswax and dyes that are applied in layers. Participants will learn techniques, designs, and historical significance of this process and practice.
Instructor Jenny Santa Maria is a batik egg artist who lives in Farmingdale, New Jersey. Jennifer is a high school art teacher in Tinton Falls and has exhibited her decorative eggs in various settings such as Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton NJ. She has been teaching pysanky classes on the East coast for several years, from Vermont to Delaware, in artist retreat centers, libraries, art museums, galleries and private sessions in intimate spaces, keeping this ancient art alive. All participants continue to leave her workshops with a deeper understanding of the culture, the art, and themselves.
This session will be conducted on Zoom and is free of charge. Registration and internet access are required to attend. Register on the Library website’s Upcoming Events list to receive emailed information on how to access the conversation. Registration closes at noon on March 27th; Zoom access link is emailed later that afternoon.
