Defending Britta Stein by Ronald H. Balson (request the book here)
Chicago, 2018: Ole Henryks, a popular restauranteur, is set to be honored by the Danish/American Association for his many civic contributions. Most consider him a hero for his actions in Nazi-occupied Denmark during World War II. Britta Stein, however, does not. The 90-year-old Chicago woman levels public accusations against Henryks by spray-painting “Coward,” “Traitor,” “Collaborator,” and “War Criminal” on the walls of his restaurant. When Mrs. Stein is charged with criminal defacement of property she becomes the target of a bitter lawsuit filed by Henryks and his son. Attorney Catherine Lockhart, with the help of her investigator husband, Liam Taggart, must reach back into wartime Denmark and locate evidence that proves Mrs. Stein's innocence.

The Wonderful World of Watercolor (Register ONCE and you will be Registered for All THREE Classes)
Presented by Artist Lynn Cummings
Watercolor is a great medium in which to have fun while learning new techniques for making paintings. No longer are artists stuck with the rules of the old days in watercolor, a medium in which there have historically been lots of "shoulds" and "can'ts." For several decades, watercolor artists have been using new materials and new methods of applying paint, something that you don't see in watercolor paintings from the past. In this three-part series, you'll learn about basic materials, how to get started, and exciting processes for applying paint, giving your paintings a more contemporary look. This experience is designed to stimulate creativity.
The Wonderful World of Watercolor is a series of three programs, building upon one another—once you've registered for one, you'll be signed up for all three!
- Tuesday, February 14: Introduction to Watercolor: In part 1, we'll focus on terminology, basic materials, and color theory, followed by a demonstration on creating an exciting wash.
- Tuesday, February 21: Negative Painting: In our second session, there will be a demonstration on painting the first layer.
- Tuesday, February 28: Finishing the Painting: In the final session, we will have a demonstration on mixing colors as well as how to make the foreground subjects pop.
Supplies Needed:
- Transparent Watercolor Paints
- Beginner level: A set of student grade watercolor paints.
- Professional quality: Tube paints (ex. Holbein, Winsor & Newton, Daniel Smith). Basic recommended colors: Lemon Yellow, New Gamboge, Quinacridone Magenta, Vermillion Red, Ultramarine Blue, Indigo. Additional suggested colors: Holbein’s Brilliant Orange, Verditer Blue, Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Verditer Blue. A small amount of paint should be squeezed into the wells of a large palette.
- Watercolor Brushes
- Beginner level: One size 10 round brush with a good point.
- Professional quality: Rounds - #8 & #10 with a good point, ¾ inch or 1 inch flat brush.
- 100% cotton, at least 8” x 10” or 9” x12”, watercolor block. (140 lb. cold press Arches preferred, Fabriano, Winsor & Newton, Fluid, etc. are fine too). If you do not wish to purchase a block, please tear paper into ¼ sheet (11 x 15 torn).
- The most important thing is the 100% cotton paper, so if you need to save money, save it on paints and brushes but please do get quality paper.
- 2B or HB artists’ pencil, kneaded eraser, 2 stable water containers (Ball jars, quart deli containers, etc.), paper towels, watercolor pencils optional.
- Beginner level: You can use painters' tape from the hardware store and tape your paper to a plastic tray, or some other non-porous item you probably have around your house (sheet protector, cutting board, etc.).
- Professional quality: A roll of artists tape or quality painters’ tape and a non-porous surface on which to tape your paper.
This program is free and available to attend via Zoom. Please register below! Programs are offered in partnership with WOS Workforce Opportunity Services, a leading non-profit organization connecting individuals from underserved populations with transformative career opportunities.
About the artist: Lynn Cummings is a watercolor, acrylic and mixed media artist and art instructor from Vermont. Her love of travel and of nature are apparent in her paintings and collages. She likes to experiment with different materials, subjects and styles. The unexpected surprises that happen in watercolor and fluid acrylics are exciting and she embraces those serendipitous happenings in her works. She is a gardener and loves painting brightly colored florals from the plants she and her friends grow as well as those in botanical gardens and in the wild.

Julia's Wardrobe Presented by Bernadette Rogoff
Part of Historically Speaking, a Virtual Lecture Series from Monmouth County Historical Association, Co-Sponsored by the Monmouth County Library
In 1868, Julia Norton Hartshorne ordered a brand new wardrobe to take advantage of the latest style trends. Her husband, Benjamin Minturn Hartshorne, was born and raised in Monmouth County and ran a successful steamboat company along the West Coast. The couple and their three children traveled from their home in San Francisco for an extended summer visit with Benjamin's family in Middletown. Upon returning, Julia fell ill and died in February 1869. Benjamin packed away all of Julia's things and returned with his children to Monmouth County. Through the generosity of Hartshorne family descendants, Julia's wardrobe is now part of the Association's historic textile collection. Director of Collections Bernadette Rogoff will introduce you to Julia and explore her style and personality with an enjoyable virtual fashion show through Julia's Wardrobe.
