Zumba Fitness for Adults
Zumba is an energizing dance fitness program that combines Latin, Pop and International music with dance moves. Zumba routines incorporate interval training (total body aerobic, cardio & toning workout) — alternating fast and slow rhythms — to help improve cardiovascular fitness. Many of the dance steps used in the routines emphasize the hips and midsection to help strengthen the core. You'll burn a lot of calories (up to 1000 in an hour-long class) and have lots of FUN doing it!  Zumba is safe for participants of all ages and can help lower the risk of heart disease, reduce blood pressure and bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol! Every 2nd Tuesday.

Please register once below to get reminders every month.

Lisa Minor has been a licensed Zumba instructor since 2012.  During this time, she has been a popular and requested instructor at many fitness facilities in the Greater Pittsburgh area including 6 branches of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, Carlow University, Crunch Fitness and X Shadyside. Virtual Yin Yoga

Yoga professional Monette Shuttleworth, 200 E-RYT and 500 RYT, is classically Hatha-trained in the Himalayan Tradition and also holds a Level I Restorative Yoga Certification. She will guide us through this monthly Yin Yoga session providing background, support tips and answering any questions. We will meet on the 3rd Thursdays of every month. Register below for entire series (cancel registration only if canceling for whole series).

Yin Yoga is slow-paced and meditative in nature and serves to complement to more active yoga (Yang) styles. Yin Yoga emphasizes passive postures held for several minutes at a time, with muscles in a relaxed state. The connective tissue in and around the muscles and joints is targeted.  Ultimately, Yin Yoga promotes the vitality, hydration, mobility and strength of the connective tissue. It also enhances a balanced flow of energetic circulation leading to a state of calmness, contentment and an overall lasting feeling of relaxation. Please bring a yoga mat, a pillow, and beach towel to support your practice. Registration required to get Zoom link. Registration is for the entire series and you need not cancel unless you are cancelling for the whole series.

Mystery Readers Book Club

June 20 - A Peculiar Combination / Ashley Weaver  Electra McDonnell and her family earn their living breaking into the homes of the rich and picking the locks on their safes.  Uncle Mick receives a tip about a safe full of jewels in the empty house of a wealthy family, he and Ellie can’t resist. All goes as planned - until the pair are caught red-handed. They are delivered to a large townhouse, where government official Major Ramsey is waiting with an offer: Either Ellie agrees to help him break into a safe and retrieve blueprints that will be critical to the British war effort, or he turns her over to the police.  Ellie has no choice but to do her bit for King and country. When she and the major break into the house in question, they find instead the purported German spy dead on the floor, the safe already open and empty. Soon, Ellie and Major Ramsey are forced to put aside their differences to unmask the double-agent. (2021)

July 18 - Chocolate Chip Murder / Joanne Fluke While trying to avoid her mother's matchmaking schemes, Hannah Swensen stirs up trouble when she investigates the murder of her punctual delivery man whose body was discovered behind her bakery surrounded by her world-famous chocolate chip cookies. (2000)

August 15 - Shiver / Allie Reynolds When Milla accepts an off-season invitation to Le Rocher, a cozy ski resort in the French Alps, she's expecting an intimate weekend of catching up with four old friends. Yet no sooner do Milla and the others arrive for the reunion than they realize something is horribly wrong. Inside the hotel, detailed instructions await them: an icebreaker game, designed to draw out their secrets. A game meant to remind them of Saskia, the enigmatic sixth member of their group, who vanished the morning of the competition years before and has long been presumed dead.  All she knows is that there's no one on the mountain she can trust.  And if Milla's not careful, she could be the next to disappear. (2020)

September 19 - Do No Harm / Dawn Eastman Emma loves her life. She’s the mother of a precocious kindergartener, married to her soulmate—a loyal and loving police detective—and has a rewarding career as a doctor at the local hospital.  But everything comes crashing down when her son, Josh, is diagnosed with a rare form of cancer.  Determined to save him, Emma makes the risky decision to sell opioids to fund the life-saving treatment he needs. But when somebody ends up dead, a lethal game of cat and mouse ensues, her own husband leading the chase. With her son’s life hanging in the balance, Emma is dragged into the dark world of drugs, lies, and murder. (2018)

Death Cheaters: Wartime Aeromedical Transport

Join us for a presentation by Dr. Lorelei Stein on Death Cheaters: Wartime Aeromedical Transport.

No war is without controversies and the Vietnam War is no exception. One must look past those controversies to identify the positive outcomes that evolve because of war. Significant advances in medical care are attributed to the Vietnam War. These achievements can be credited to the U.S. Army’s understanding of the concept that reducing time from wounding to treatment was directly related to saving lives. The Bell UH-1 Iroquois helicopter, known as the Huey, became the principal aircraft for aeromedical transport of the wounded. What has been credited for the medical advances in Vietnam are: 1) The Huey had greater operational range and speed and could carry more casualties than any other helicopter used in war; 2) In-flight medics provided aggressive shock resuscitation and emergency procedures during transport; 3) The Huey had radio capability and could inform the receiving care facility of the injuries and status of the wounded; 4) The Huey pilots, with the tactical call sign of DUST OFF, and who called themselves “death cheaters” could get airborne in 3 minutes after receiving the call for pick up, they flew unarmed, often into active combat and at night; 5) The first use of Type O negative blood as “universal donor”; 6) The first use of frozen blood products which proved lifesaving in many instances. There were no conditions under which the wounded were denied timely evacuation; every challenge was surmounted by the capabilities of the Huey and the skill of the crews. The advancements of medical care first pioneered during the Vietnam War and the concept of reducing time from injury to treatment is now the “golden hour” which serves as a benchmark of civilian trauma care. Helicopter medical evacuation, trauma centers and helipads have become common practice in healthcare systems throughout the United States.

Lorelei Stein, CRNA, PhD is a nurse anesthetist, an educator and a researcher. She has practiced in several area hospitals, outpatient facilities, and she teaches a variety of advanced life support courses in the Allegheny Health Network. Her areas of research include the history of medical education, the history of medicine, and the accreditation of graduate medical education in the United States.

This program will be both in person and conducted via the free video conferencing software Zoom and a Library staff member will be supervising the session.  The Librarian coordinating the event will email each registrant a Zoom meeting invitation before the start of the program.  Zoom is available as a free desktop (for Windows, MacOS, and Linux Operating systems) and mobile application for Android and Apple iOS devices.
