Historic Preservation: Bridging the Past, Present and Future

Historic Preservation: Bridging the Past, Present and Future

The field of Historic Preservation is relatively new to the continuum of architecture and the design of our built environment. It aims to strike a balance between preserving our past and future development. By identifying the values of a building, a site, or a community we empower our past to better inform our present and thoughtfully shape our future. This presentation will touch on the history and development of architectural conservation, highlighting the salient principles of the preservation field exemplified through a range of projects.

Teresa Duff is the Chief Conservator and Director at LINEAGE Historic Preservation Services. Teresa specializes in the preservation of our built environment including architecture, public art and monuments, historic landscapes such as cemeteries, murals, as well as historic interiors and architectural finishes.

Originally from Southern California, Teresa studied Art History at the University of California, Berkeley. After graduation, she began teaching in the Department of Education at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles where her love of art was woven into dynamic, context-based educational programming for school students and the public. Teresa began her graduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania, obtaining an M.S. in Historic Preservation, and, an Advanced Certificate in Architectural Conservation and Site Management.

Zumba Fitness for Adults
Zumba is an energizing dance fitness program that combines Latin, Pop and International music with dance moves. Zumba routines incorporate interval training (total body aerobic, cardio & toning workout) — alternating fast and slow rhythms — to help improve cardiovascular fitness. Many of the dance steps used in the routines emphasize the hips and midsection to help strengthen the core. You'll burn a lot of calories (up to 1000 in an hour-long class) and have lots of FUN doing it!  Zumba is safe for participants of all ages and can help lower the risk of heart disease, reduce blood pressure and bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol! Every 2nd Tuesday.

Please register once below to get reminders every month.

Lisa Minor has been a licensed Zumba instructor since 2012.  During this time, she has been a popular and requested instructor at many fitness facilities in the Greater Pittsburgh area including 6 branches of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh, Carlow University, Crunch Fitness and X Shadyside. She maintains current Group Exercise and AED/CPR/First Aid Certifications.

Mystery Readers Book Club

November 21 - When the Stars Go Dark / Paula McClain (2021) Anna Hart is a seasoned missing persons detective in San Francisco. When tragedy strikes her personal life, she flees to the Northern California village of Mendocino to grieve. She lived there as a child with her beloved foster parents, and now she believes it might be the only place left for her. Yet the day she arrives, she learns that a local teenage girl has gone missing.  The crime reminds Anna when the unsolved murder of a young girl touched Mendocino and changed the community forever. As past and present collide, Anna realizes that she has been led to this moment. The most difficult lessons of her life have given her insight into how victims come into contact with violent predators. As Anna becomes obsessed with saving the missing girl, she must accept that true courage means getting out of her own way and learning to let others in

December 19 - Ambulance Chaser / Brian Cuban Pittsburgh personal injury lawyer and part-time drug dealer Jason Feldman’s life goals are simple: date hot women, earn enough cash to score cocaine on a regular basis, and care for his dementia-ravaged father. That all changes when a long-lost childhood friend contacts him about the discovery of buried remains belonging to a high school classmate who went missing thirty years prior, and the fragile life Jason’s built over his troubled past is about to come crashing down. Soon, he’s on the run across Pittsburgh and beyond to find his old friend, while trying to figure out whom to trust among Ukrainian mobsters, vegan drug dealers, washed-up sports stars, an Israeli James Bond, and an ex-wife who happens to be the district attorney. The only way he’ll survive is if he overcomes his addictions so he can face his childhood demons.

Virtual Yin Yoga

Yoga professional Monette Shuttleworth, 200 E-RYT and 500 RYT, is classically Hatha-trained in the Himalayan Tradition and also holds a Level I Restorative Yoga Certification. She will guide us through this monthly Yin Yoga session providing background, support tips and answering any questions. We will meet on the 3rd Thursdays of every month. Register below for entire series (cancel registration only if canceling for whole series).

Yin Yoga is slow-paced and meditative in nature and serves to complement to more active yoga (Yang) styles. Yin Yoga emphasizes passive postures held for several minutes at a time, with muscles in a relaxed state. The connective tissue in and around the muscles and joints is targeted.  Ultimately, Yin Yoga promotes the vitality, hydration, mobility and strength of the connective tissue. It also enhances a balanced flow of energetic circulation leading to a state of calmness, contentment and an overall lasting feeling of relaxation. Please bring a yoga mat, a pillow, and beach towel to support your practice. Registration required to get Zoom link. Registration is for the entire series and you need not cancel unless you are cancelling for the whole series.

Virtual Yin Yoga will be conducted via the free video conferencing software Zoom and a Library staff member will be supervising the session.  The Librarian coordinating the event will email each registrant a Zoom meeting invitation before the start of the program.  Zoom is available as a free desktop (for Windows, MacOS, and Linux Operating systems) and mobile application for Android and Apple iOS devices. Once Zoom is installed, you will be able to join the virtual Library program.

Registration is required.  By registering for this event you have agreed to comply with the library's patron behavior policy. All non-compliant participants will be immediately and permanently blocked from further participation.  Because the Librarian facilitating the event will not be able to provide live technical support during the virtual program, it is strongly encouraged you familiarize yourself with Zoom in advance of the program. You can also contact the Library’s Virtual Reference Service for assistance learning Zoom.  You can also join a test meeting to familiarize yourself with Zoom. For more in-depth instructions please visit the Zoom support page on joining a meeting.

Once Zoom is installed, you will be able to join the virtual Library program.

Registration is required.  By registering for this event you have agreed to comply with the library's patron behavior policy.
