Afternoon Book Club

This month we'll be reading & discussing the 2024 Read Across Rhode Island book, Solito by Javier Zamora. Copies are available at the Circulation Desk.

Trip. My parents started using that word about a year ago--"one day, you'll take a trip to be with us. Like an adventure."

Javier's adventure is a three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border. He will leave behind his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with a mother who left four years ago and a father he barely remembers. Traveling alone except for a group of strangers and a coyote hired to lead them to safety, Javier's trip is supposed to last two short weeks.

At nine years old, all Javier can imagine is rushing into his parents' arms, snuggling in bed between them, living under the same roof again. He does not see the perilous boat trips, relentless desert treks, pointed guns, arrests and deceptions that await him; nor can he know that those two weeks will expand into two life-altering months alongside a group of strangers who will come to encircle him like an unexpected family.

Author Talk w/ Kimberly Ragosta: A Time to Gather

Join us for a presentation by local author Kimberly Ragosta as she discusses her new cookbook, A Time to Gather.

With over 500 delicious recipes, Kimberly Ragosta from “Little House in the Forest” brings you A Time to Gather -- a cookbook that will fill you with inspiration and ideas for cooking local and seasonal farm-fresh foods that are designed to bring people together in a way that fills you with love, purpose, and good food.

About the Author:Kimberly Ragosta has had a passion for food ever since she was a small child. When she was a teen, she worked at a local gourmet and was also a waitress for a handful of well known Rhode Island restaurants. She began diving into the art of cooking when she was first married in 2007.

Kim’s goal was to create an eclectic bunch of farm fresh recipes that intended to bring people together in the kitchen and around the table. She has collected all of the recipes she has created over the last 16 years, and this is what you will find in this one of a kind cookbook. It is her hope that this cookbook will get dirty and used in your kitchen, that your love for cooking will grow and that you will make this “A Time to Gather” in your home with loved ones to share delicious, local and seasonal foods that nourish the mind, body, and soul.

Evening Book Club

This month we'll be reading & discussing The Paris Library by Janet Skeslien Charles. Copies are available at the Circulation Desk.

Paris, 1939: Young and ambitious Odile Souchet has it all: her handsome police officer beau and a dream job at the American Library in Paris. When the Nazis march into Paris, Odile stands to lose everything she holds dear, including her beloved library. Together with her fellow librarians, Odile joins the Resistance with the best weapons she has: books. But when the war finally ends, instead of freedom, Odile tastes the bitter sting of unspeakable betrayal.

Montana, 1983: Lily is a lonely teenager looking for adventure in small-town Montana. Her interest is piqued by her solitary, elderly neighbor. As Lily uncovers more about her neighbor’s mysterious past, she finds that they share a love of language, the same longings, and the same intense jealousy, never suspecting that a dark secret from the past connects them.

A powerful novel that explores the consequences of our choices and the relationships that make us who we are—family, friends, and favorite authors—The Paris Library shows that extraordinary heroism can sometimes be found in the quietest of places.

Author Talk w/ Dr. Fine

Dr. Fine will visit the library to discuss his new book, The Jewish Prince of Denmark and Other Stories. Copies of the book will be available.

The Jewish Prince of Denmark and Other Stories is a collection of short stories about Jews and non-Jews, living together in a confusing world and trying to find a way to continue to do so, in a world that keeps changing, collapsing in on itself, the ground changing under everyone’s feet. Stories about endless heartbreak, small choices, small acts, small ideas, simple decencies, the way people take care of one another, people who live in the shadow of the valley of death but persevere.

Dr. Fine is the author of On Medicine as Colonialism (2023), Health Care Revolt (2018), The Nature of Health (Radcliffe Press, 2007), Rhode Island Stories (Stillwater River Press, 2021), The Bull and Other Stories (Stillwater River Press, November 2020) the IPNE 2021 Literary Fiction Book of the Year, and Abundance (PM Press, 2019). He is the former Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health, a family physician, speaker, commentator, podcaster, community organizer, and activist.
