Parenting in the Digital Dystopia
6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

In a world increasingly dominated by technology, parents are often left wondering how to best guide their children through its many potential pitfalls. Dr. Loretta L.C. Brady's new book, Technology Touchpoints: Parenting in the Digital Dystopia, seeks to answer that question. The book takes an in-depth look at the influence of technology and social media on human development and offers practical advice for parents and families seeking to navigate this complex digital landscape. Join us for a discussion with Dr. Brady as we explore the many ways technology is impacting parenting, including the rising rates of screen time among children and teens, the explosive growth of social media, and the ever-changing landscape of online privacy.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing following the event.

Kids are welcome to play a special kids-only Winter Reading Challenge BINGO game in an adjacent room during this program.

VIRTUAL: Los Literários: Spanish Literary Society
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM

Presented in partnership with Groton Public Library, Los Literários is dedicated to Spanish speakers who love reading. This small group will meet online every second Friday of the month to talk about whatever people are already reading. No assigned reading!

The books and articles you read don’t need to be in Spanish. Only the discussion is in Spanish. Classics, mysteries, biographies, children’s books, you name it -- discussion on any genre is welcome.

This will be a space to talk about what people have been reading, recite a poem, read a passage of our latest read, recommend our favorite book ever, and hopefully even inspire you to comment on other books based on what you hear.

During a meeting, you may choose to stay quiet and enjoy the discussion, or share your thoughts on a book magazine article, an author, a poem you love – anything, really.

TV Writer Q&A: Dan Hamamura
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Dan Hamamura is a Los Angeles-based TV Writer and Producer who's written for hit shows on several networks, including most recently on the CW's Kung Fu. Join us as he shares writing tips, shows examples of pages from scripts he's written versus how they ended up on the screen, and takes your questions about writing professionally in Hollywood.

Dan Hamamura Bio:

Dan was born and raised in Hawaii, and has been interested in television ever since he discovered (at the age of seven) that he could negotiate a later bedtime by promising to go to sleep as soon as the Cheers rerun was over. Eventually, this translated into an actual desire to work in television itself, and led him to Los Angeles, where he worked on numerous shows as an assistant prior to becoming a writer full-time. He has written for TNT’s Rizzoli & Isles, Netflix’s The Ghost Bride, and most recently served as a Writer/Producer on the CW’s Kung Fu.

Dan has also written, directed, and performed with various sketch and improvisational comedy groups throughout Los Angeles and around the country, most notably at the Upright Citizens Brigade and iO West (RIP). He swears he is not an actor.

Recent Releases: Tár
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Cate Blanchett is winning critical acclaim as Lydia Tár, the groundbreaking conductor of a major German Orchestra. We meet Tár at the height of her career, as she's preparing both a book launch and much-anticipated live performance of Mahler's Fifth Symphony. Over the ensuing weeks her life begins to unravel in a singularly modern way. The result is a searing examination of power, and its impact and durability in today's society.

Nashua River Junior Scientist Program
9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

For ages 10-14. Do you have a budding scientist in your household? Join us during February school vacation for a week-long, hands-on "Nashua River Junior Scientist Program" led by the Nashua River Watershed Assocation. Using the Nashua River as their “outdoor laboratory," participants will explore river issues using exciting hands-on activities related to river ecology, watershed protection, and look at this important resource through the lens of climate change. The junior scientists will design solutions and create a 3-D model of the river incorporating their inventions in miniature models to demonstrate their solutions to human and climate impact on the river and their city. The 3-D model will be placed on display for library visitor viewing.

Please email registration@nashuariverwatershed.org to register.

An America Divided: Can We Live With One Another? with New Yorker Staff Writer, Emma Green
7:30 PM - 8:30 PM
Join Emma Green in this exploration of the ways that Americans are divided - politically, religiously, economically, communities, and even families. What has caused these ruptures and what are some ways for us to come back together? Pulling from the many, many people she has spoken to over the years as well as her articles on the Federalist Society, the Supreme Court, and Affirmative Action, Emma will lead us in this difficult but essential discussion.

Emma Green is a staff writer at The New Yorker who covers education and academia. She was previously a staff writer at The Atlantic, where she covered religion and politics, and where she also served as managing editor. Her work has been anthologized in several books, including “The American Crisis” and “The God Beat,” and has won a number of awards, including the George W. Hunt, S.J., Prize for Excellence in Journalism, Arts & Letters and the Supple Award for feature writing from the Religion News Association.

We're thrilled to be collaborating with the Ashland Public Library and several other Massachusetts libraries to bring this program to our communities.
