Nashua Chamber Orchestra Family Concert

The Colors of the Orchestra

Learn about the instruments of the orchestra, and their different “colors.”  Enjoy music by Beethoven and Strauss and Haydn’s “Surprise” Symphony. An instrument "petting zoo" will follow the performance. Children will be able handle and play orchestral instruments, guided by the musicians.

This year's concert is outdoors, so bring a lawn chair or blanket. Held inside in case of rain. Listeners of all ages are invited!

Nature Detectives: Water Wonders' Hidden Treasures
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM

Families with children ages 6 and up are invited to explore local parks at Nature Detectives, a free program offered by the Nashua Public Library and the Nashua River Watershed Association (NRWA). Each month, led by NRWA naturalists, families will set out on a new adventure, exploring the nature and history of the sites and completing a sleuth sheet while they search for clues.

The group will meet on January 29, February 26, March 26, April 30, and May 21, investigating a new topic each month.

Supported in part by the Merrimack Conservation Partnership.

Play with Clay: Hand-Building Mugs and Vases

Ages 18 and up

Shana Brautigam of Rooted in Clay, a lifelong potter, will lead a workshop on hand-building techniques and guide you in creating a one-of-a-kind piece of functional art. You’ll also learn to use natural objects to create surface designs. After the class Shana will glaze and fire the objects at her studio for later pickup at the library. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little messy! Event may be held outdoors if weather allows. Registration is required.

Friends Pop-Up Book Sale

Jack Kerouac--Film and Discussion

Part documentary, part drama, this film presents the life and work of Jack Kerouac, an American writer with Québec roots who became one of the most important spokesmen for his generation. Intercut with archival footage, photographs and interviews, this film takes apart the heroic myth and even returns to the childhood of the author whose life and work contributed greatly to the cultural, sexual, and social revolution of the 1960s. In French with English subtitles.

The movie will be followed by a discussion in French and in English led by Director Herménégilde Chiasson..

This event is co-presented with Center de la Francophonie des Amériques, the Canadian consulate in Boston, the Quebec delegation in Boston, and Club Richelieu.

The Brian S. McCarthy Foundation presents “Science Goes to the Movies,” some of the best (and occasionally worst) science-fiction and science-inspired films.

The story of a journey by astronauts of United Planets Cruiser C-57D led by their commanding officer (Leslie Nielsen in one of his earliest roles) to a distant planet, Altair-IV, to investigate the fate of a colony established 20 years before.

Bach's Lunch Concert: Scott Sanchez

Classical guitarist Scott Sanchez’s playing has been described as “colorful and poignant” (Soundboard Magazine, USA) and “very engaging, virtuosic and spirited” (David Leisner, Manhattan School of Music). He has published articles in international music periodicals, released four recordings, and regularly arranged and composed for the guitar. And he’s performed in master classes for renowned guitarists like Scott Tennant, David Russel, and Pepe Romero.

Pianist Yukiko Sekino’s accolades include Gold Medalist of the 2006 International Russian Music Piano Competition, the S&R Foundation’s Washington Award, and Tanglewood Music Center’s Jackson Prize, among many others. She is a graduate of Harvard and Julliard and holds a doctorate from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Recent recitals include Jordan Hall in Boston, Dame Myra Hess Concerts in Chicago, Hitomi Memorial Hall in Tokyo, Japan, and Northeast Asia International Piano Festival in China.

having learned corridos, rancheras, and huapangos at her grandmother’s knee. At age 15 she began a
musical career that has included performances at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the JFK Presidential
Library and Museum, and Berklee Performance Center. Tonight she’ll bring her mariachi band
to her third performance at the library.

Flutist Eduardo Gómez is an acclaimed orchestra and chamber music soloist. A native of Venezuela, he began his music studies at Vicente Emilio Sojo Conservatory and continued in Caracas at the Simón Bolívar Conservatory. He has won positions with the Montreal Symphonic Community Orchestra and the Lara Symphonic Orchestra and performed as a soloist in the Maturín Symphonic and Táchira’s Simón Bolívar Symphonic Orchestras.

Awarded an honorable mention at the 1st Yamaha National Contest Music of Venezuela, Eduardo has also been twice invited to the prestigious Annual National Flute Association Convention to perform with the Flutist’s National Orchestra of Venezuela. In addition to performing, Gomez works as a flute finisher technician for Nagahara Flutes in Chelmsford, Mass. Eduardo will be accompanied by pianist Laura Kennedy.

Summer Concert on the Plaza: The A-Beez

This Boston-based music collective’s roots lie in soul, funk, and R&B. At its core are keyboardist Amy Bellamy and bassist Aaron Bellamy. Though their music can be loosely classified as soul, The A-Beez’s original sound draws from traditions of funk and R&B and is heavily influenced by jazz and hip-hop.
