OceanCon Week Workshop: Pitching Your Graphic Novel
Pitching to comic publishers may feel like an intimidating task, but this workshop will help you understand what exactly goes into pitching a graphic novel and what agents, editors, and publishers want to see in your pitch.

Akira Brown is an editor, comic writer, and publisher. After graduating from Savannah College of Art and Design, with a BFA in Sequential Art, they founded WildStar Press, an indie comics publisher geared towards uplifting the voices of diverse and marginalized creators. Their personal goal was and still is to spread stories across the globe, sharing a message that's not only positive but one relatable to the minority in an effort to push that representation does in fact matter.

Register in advance for this meeting:

OceanCon Week Lecture: Were There Witches in the Middle Ages? Medieval Magic, Medicine, and Religion

When we think of witches, we tend to think of the Middle Ages. However, witches—and the witch hunts associated with them—are a phenomenon of the early modern rather than the medieval period. Does this mean there was no magic in the Middle Ages? No! Instead, magical practice was a complex phenomenon that overlapped significantly with practices associated with medicine and religion. This is most clear when we look at the healing arts that dominated the Middle Ages, in which the boundaries between magic, medicine, and religion look quite blurry to the modern eye. This talk will break down modern myths about witches and witchcraft while getting at the roots of medieval magic by looking at medieval recipes and recommendations for healing injuries and diseases.

Jennifer Jordan received her doctorate in medieval history from Stony Brook University in 2021. She has taught classes on medieval magic, medicine, and religion; medieval women and gender; and popular medievalism in contemporary film. She is also the co- author of two graphic novels with Sophie Goldstein: the self-published web comic Darwin Carmichael is Going to Hell, and An Embarrassment of Witches from Top Shelf Comix. She lives in New York with her husband and two cats.

Saturday Vinyasa Yoga with Dot Scott

Vinyasa is a type of yoga that links movement and breath to attain balance in the mind and body. Connecting movement with our breath links our awareness to the present. Join  Dorothy Scott for a relaxing yet invigorating class that encompasses basic yoga poses which focus on lengthening the body’s muscles, while expanding the joints as we utilize the breath to gain clarity within.  We will begin slowly to gradually prepare the body for deeper asana (poses) and end it by honoring our practice with a relaxing (meditation) sivasana.

Make sure to have a mat, and perhaps a towel and water.  Wear loose fitting clothing. Namaste.

Aimed for all ages, the program uses “family-friendly” video clips and PowerPoint to take audiences behind the scenes of some of the coolest flicks (and a few fun TV shows), exploring how Hollywood’s take on superheroes has changed with the times and technologies available.

Clive Young is the co-editor of Mix Magazine, author of two books (Homemade Hollywood and Crank It Up) and a pop-culture historian who has presented nearly 400 library programs on movies, music and more. He's appeared as a pop culture expert in numerous documentaries, such as The People Vs. George Lucas, and television shows, including most recently an episode of Rock My Collection on AXS.

Saturday Vinyasa Yoga

Namaste.
