MIDDLE SCHOOL - SAFETY GOGGLES ADVISED dives deep into tricky stuff like drama, gossip, popularity, cliques, and more. With fun illustrations, humor, choose-your-own-adventure stories, a dash of science, and insights from students, this guidebook explores the halls of middle school, leaving readers informed and prepared to navigate it all. In this interactive presentation, Jessica Speer will share how this book grew of out conversations with 7th graders and the top ten things students identified as the trickiest things about middle school. Then, some of these topics will be dissected to explain what is really going on beneath the surface. Get ready to laugh, learn and take your understanding of middle school to a whole new level. All ages welcome.

All attendees will be entered into a raffle for Jessica's book.

Teen Programs Oceanside Library is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Art Lecture: Dada and Surrealism

Join us as we embrace the absurd and go beyond reality!  Dada was a movement created during World War I as a reaction against war, fighting against traditional values.  Followed up by the emergence of Surrealism which set to defy reason and logic in response to the seemingly unreasonable World War I.  The art depicted unnerving, illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to spring forth.

This Zoom lecture will be shown in person in our Program Room but you can also watch from home at the below link:

Virtual Lecture: Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses

“Saving Fire Island from Robert Moses” written by Christopher Verga, published by History Press, details the struggle between development and conservation. Moses’s goal to create a four lane highway out of Fire Island was fought by the community for thirty years. Bounding these grassroots efforts was the guiding idea that the natural beauty with limited access to motorized vehicles was a birth right for south shore residents. Armed with these efforts and guiding ideas, community residents waged a public relations war against Robert Moses, who wielded unchecked political power for thirty years with no accountability from voters. This war resulted in the creation of the Fire Island National Sea Shore and the beginning of the end of Moses career.
